I had a can of Smoked Oysters with crackers and cheese for dinner last night. It was the first time I'd had canned Oysters. Not Bad! Who else likes them? Or are they nasty?

Gotta go with nasty. My dad used to eat those along with pickled herring, sardines... and several other fishy canned products. I'd say it's some rough eating, but if you enjoyed them, hey eat up!

NASTY. I would venture potentially dangerous too.

Shellfish.... man, eat that stuff fresh or cooked.

I love 'em. But I love oysters in general. Most often I have them steamed.

Some of the cheapos are gross. All are gross if you're adding cheese.
I love em though if they're decent quality. I eat the ones from Trader Joes frequently - they're packed in Olive oil. Drop one on a Ritz cracker w/ a splash of Frank's or Texas pete. Delicious !

They are a good alternative to sardines. I'm kind of bored with sardines any more.

Big difference between smoked oysters and canned oysters.
Smoked are very good. Canned are similar to some sort of Mush.
When available I prefer fresh in the shell and shuck my own to enjoy raw on the half with tobasco, in stew, or the smoked. I skip the crackers and just douse the can with hot sauce and eat um with a fork but they are gone so quickly.....

Yeah, you're right. I wonder why? My tastes haven't really changed all that much. Now, fresh ones I shuck myself OTOH, yum yum...I even bought a good oyster knife on New Years Eve. Champagne and fresh oysters on the half shell is a good time... Ice cold beer works too.

you could tell her you're assimilating to the environment, for her pleasure

It depends on the brand - some are small and dry and others are plump and soft. I put them in chowder, or jambalaya. Roland is a pretty good brand, but Ocean Queen is the best so far as are their smoked scallops, clams, etc.

Cheap smoked oysters are good from time to time.

These aren't cheap, but they're really good anytime:

Their smoked tuna is fantastic, too.

oysters and beer

a good ice cold Vodka like Belvedere or Grey Goose for raw fish or herring.
I know a guy who was an exchange student to Norway, Iceland or Scandanavia, one of those countries but I can't recall which. For the winter holiday they ate a ton of raw seafood and vodka all day long as tradition. I think Russian Cavier too.

I practically lived on cans of those from the Dollar store while in grad school!...since they're smoked, they are technically no longer raw, so the health risk associated with the more popular and delicious raw oyster are not an issue....as long a you remember that you're probably not getting the freshest, highest quality oyster to begin with. My buddy worked for years on a tuna boat, and he's seen first hand the "quality" of product that goes into even the best canned tuna....'refuses to eat it!

Hey, if your starving.... I would take just about anything. But that's the only way I'd go near the canned fish product, unless its tuna.

Drain well, little cocktail sauce, little cheese, few crackers.
One of my favorite snacks.
Ya gotta get rid of that nasty juice!

Smoked Oysters? I would think that they'd be hard to light and wouldn't hit well.

Growing up they were a delecacy- every Christmas Santa Claus would put one in our stocking.

That's awesome. I'd get a box of Lucky Charms as a kid. Lucky Charms is a sugary breakfast cereal, the likes of which was forbidden in our house when i was a child. So as a treat, i'd occasionally get a box for Christmas from Santa.

Good times.

It's iconic in my family. My grandparents would put them out with wheat thins and also a chunk of blue or rocquefort cheese. I still do this. Not every day mind you, but when getting together with friends and family for the cocktail hour.

In my youth, I worked in a fish processing plant for a couple of months.

I learned one thing for sure: NEVER buy any commercially smoked seafood. It hides the true flavor, so they save the worst stuff for smoking. You would not want to eat it if you smelled it before they smoked it.

In my case, I was handling Salmon but it was so bad I'm going with that policy across the board.

Good memories of when I was kid in the 70's. At Christmas...That three tiered round serving tray with the gold handle at the top....loaded with all kinds of pickles, cheeses, crackers, chips, and of course smoked oysters. I always wanted to like them because they looked so good but never could acquire a taste for them.

LOVE them. The smoked baby clams I get at the Asian Market are just awesome. To me they are literally CANDY. I eat them out of the can with a fork and drink the remaining juice.

The oysters, though, give me the Big-Pants. That can be a problem.

Rinse the unctuous oil off of them and they become much more palatable.

^^^^^...Then soak 'em in olive oil...add some Limberger cheese...a good sweet onion...your favorite crackers, invite some smoked Salmon to the feast also, AND Don't forget to wash them down with some Ice Cold Longneck's, this is no place for the "Red Solo" cup (unless you are lucky enough to have a Keg on Ice)....

Used to eat them a bunch. Usually on a cracker w/ hot chinese mustard. I love oysters, all styles. The best oysters I've had were the deep fried ones from an Anthony's fishette in San Diego.
