Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew/had done how to make an SG with a maestro into a stoptail, while keeping the tailpiece (use it as a counterweight to balance the guitar better)?
Thanks.

Maybe set it up like the Derek Trucks SG: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/gibson-limited-run-50th-anniversary-derek-trucks-sg-electric-guitar

Or like Duane:

I think the look of the hole maestro with the wammy
looks nicer than leaving a dead huge metal cap.

Something I've thought about trying: replace the ABR/Nashville with an intonatable wraptail and leave the Maestro on there. That way you can put as many, or as few, strings on the trem as you want. EG - Gibson B-Bender. With no strings on the Maestro, you can just take the arm assembly off. The spring should be fine by itself when left on along with the long metal backplate.

The Lyre Vibrola as it is known (not Maestro) does not weigh alot, not really much of a counterweight.

If you're talking about these, just string through the tailpiece and put the top half of the vibrola in the case.

I did the conversion to an historic, but did not keep the tail piece.

Does anyone know of a place to buy a (I guess a hunk of metal) like on the Derek Trucks signature?
Thanks again for the suggestions.

It depends on how authentic you want to get. You can usually buy an actual vintage assembly on eBay from sellers like 'vintagecorrectparts.' I saw one on a couple days ago. Dunno about anyone's ability to get one of the newer Gibson repros. Either of those options would get you the Lyre engraving. You can get one without the engraving from allparts and some other sites.
It's actually two pieces of metal: The flat lyre-engraved block, and a frame it attaches to. The frame is what gets fastened to the guitar and is hidden under the flat block.
Just did some price comparisons:
Vintage from eBay: ~250-500
Repro from eBay: 200-300
Allparts: 150

The Lyre does affect your sound so it will sound different without it.
