View Full Version : Ann Curry resigns/is kicked off The Today Show....

Today was Ann Curry's last day on The Today Show. I for one, am glad to see her go, as I think she had risen to her level of incompetence, but I sure felt sorry for her in her tearful farewell.
She was horrible at spontaneous interviews, and I think that's what killed her. However, she's given the last 14 years of her life to that show, and she was very good as the news reader...they merely elevated her to a position she wasn't very good at.

I wish they had been able to keep Amy Robach. Or Erin Burnett. Either one of those would have been a great co-host for Matt.

And yes, I do feel badly for Ann. She is a decent journalist.

It's been years since I've watched morning happy talk, but one thing I know for sure: The Today Show has been going steadily downhill since they dumped J. Fred Muggs. He was robbed.

I always liked her. What's the real deal? Was it striclty ratings? Did Lauer push her out? Is she a lightweight compared to Savannah Guthrie?

Shame on the Today show for bringing her out for the contrived goodbye. As she was choking back tears, the others were sitting there woodenly, then spoke insincerely of their favorite Ann moment. No one wanted to touch her until the end.

Then they returned from the commercial and the new girl was there, as if Ann had been teleported. At least, NBC could have made her farewell the last segment of the show, and introduced the new person Monday. What a bunch of maroons!

Not to hijack, but I thought the movie "Morning Glory" that came out a couple of years ago was a pretty entertaining look at morning news/talk.

She was a good news host but didn't have the charisma of a morning anchor on a national show. I never thought Meredith Viera did either. Amy Robach-I would vote for her because she is adorable! She went to ABC though. Now they can bring Katie Kouric back with Matt.

What, exactly, are Matt Lauer's "exceptional" abilities? We're not talking rocket science here; the only qualifications required seem to be a reasonably pleasant appearance and an ingratiating personality. From there, it's a little more than a popularity contest, and it looks as though we the people simply did not take to Ann, which I think is a shame because she did not appear fake to me at all. As for her inadequate interviewing technique referred to by a few here, I often stick the show on in the morning before work or on the days I'm at home, and I never noticed that she was any less able than the rest of them. Anyway, I'll definitely take their ratings down by one now. These morning shows are all the same, and after this nasty trick I'll go with one of the others.

I was in high school during Bryant Gumble's tenure, and for a time there was some feud brewing between him and Willard Scott. My folks pointed out one morning how the two of them were sitting completely side-by-side, "buddy-buddy"-like, I guess so the producers could make the impression they actually do get along and all is well in the world. They weren't foolin' this ol' bird though.

Stuff like that is why I now get all my objective and important news from inner-webz. :aok

I never thought Ann should have gotten the job in the first place. She always seemed a bit melodramatic. I was surprised they chose her, other than she had been there such a long time.

So, sad she gets the boot. But she walks away with $20-30M. I'd get fired too for that scratch.

Admittedly, I didn't watch this show often, but she couldn't have been any worse than Kathie Lee Gifford (just ask Martin Short and James Taylor). IMO she's a better fit back on the news desk or used for outside reporting of serious subjects and not the social chatter or the matchup with Matt. It was painful to watch them basically 'quietly' erase her from the show- with her right there. Matt should go next in favor of a younger guy with hair intact and not that spray on job he's got going on up there.

True that she may have not been a good fit WITH ML, as Ann is a beautiful, well-spoken and an actual journalist. Sometimes her nerdy sense of humor may have put off a few, but ML is unwatchable; I see him as the insincere dbag he comes off- only redeeming characteristic is imagining him as the model for Colber... putting on the ML "I'm smart" glasses. Watching Savannah is like watching ML's 'niece' pretending that she's 'got it goin' on' with her smarmy 'uncle' validating her duhness.

Long time Today Show viewer, here. I was, anyway. It's gotten fluffier and fluffier, it seems to me. I've always liked Ann Curry, though I felt her promotion was NBC loyalty, rather than the best pick. I think she's a feature reporter (and a great one, at that), not a host. She always seemed a bit over-matched and awkward (maybe that was a lack of chemistry with the team?).

To me, however, The Today Show jumped the shark when they gave the 4th hour to Kathy Lee. Poor Hoda Kotb. Unwatchable.

Agreed. When she took over for Vierra, I told my wife the Today Show now sucks. It has been a painful year watching her.

She is good at what SHE does, but Ann was not the right fit for the co host seat. I think Savanah will fit nicely.

Curry was not the right fit but Gutherie isn't either. She is all about herself. Tries way too hard to look cute on camera, always striking a pose. Whenever she is on, I see the daughter Sue, from "The Middle" show. Might be a smart girl, but phony, phony, phony.

Now if the Today Show will dump "The (lame) Professionals", I'll be happy...

That is true...Kathy Lee is horrible...I don't know how anybody can watch her. I put on the TV in the morning at work but have to shut it off when KL and Hoda come on. Just horrible.

I like Savanah G, though. She seems sharp and I think she's good looking. She could do good. We'll see. She did good today when the court decision came down. They didn't have time to think cause they were on when the decision came on. And she had insightful commentary on-the-spot.

I feel bad for Ann Curry but looking forward to what Savannah can do. Hopefully Ann will transition gracefully into this senior correspondent role they made up for her.

These shows (and my wife and I scroll thru all of them and ESPN- every morning! ) have become just unwatchable- the news is no longer news , the shows are so celebrity and network driven and so much value is placed on that-celebrity! The music concerts are horrible (Justin F***ing Bieber, and flavor of the month dance club chics...) plus now (especially with NBC going 3 hours) they all stretch 'content' over way too much time...That said, Natalie Morales, and Savanna Guthrie both got "it!" and are hot! I still miss Katie C as she was (for us in NoVa ) a local!

BTW if you ever need something to put you to sleep watch CBS's Charlie Rose (who looks asleep at all times) and "Oprah Jr." I mean Gayle (Gail?) King- who was the brainchild for this duo (Erica Hill is very good but this is one laid back snooze fest)

My history with the Today show is long and storied. Pre-Gumble, I am too feeble to remember that period. However my favorite segments of all times was:

Where in the World is Matt Lauer... Kinda wished from time to time that they wouldn't find him.

There has been a contentious relationship with the hosts fighting for control of the show for ever. Anyone remember Deborah Norvil? Boot kicked out because she what a threat to the host... LOL

The only thing that counts in TV is not faces, not personality, but rating points.....

Rating Points determine the ad buy costs.... what ever it takes. It's a cold biz.

I like Ann Curry btw... She is a good reporter, and fair. I saw her interview the Dali Lamma at a Dave Mathews concert. She was good, probing and asked hard questions.

I am sorry to see her off the show, but she is a professional and will come out better for it.

Erin Burnett blew(no pun intended) her shot at network TV when she posed for Maxim. I'm not saying it's right...it's just a fact(in fact...I think she was incredibly hot in her spread, but probably not the best career move):

http://freeimagesarchive.com/data/media/203/1_erin+burnett.jpg

Amy Robach would have been my choice after Meridith left....I couldn't believe they picked Ann.

All that being said, I think Savannah is going to be great. She's got the news credentials, and she's got the cute, girl next door, look to her. Hot enough for the male viewers, but not threatening to the female ones....

I agree with you there. Matt is pretty decent and I actually think Ann is a decent journalist as well but when the goal is to see how much Justin Bieber style "news" you can talk about rather than actually report (like the BBC does) what is really going on in the world - you could tell you had a bunch of serious reporters here extremely uncomfortable doing tabloid news, and as much as they keep switching them out this is going to continue to happen. They might as well go hire the cast of ET or Extra! to do the Today Show if that is going to be the approach.

Me, I'm about ready to just read/listen to the BBC and turn off American "news" entirely.

Aw, c'mon, that's not entirely fair! The "How did you feel when your testicles were severed?" type question is par for the course in trash news programs. Curry's defining moment for me was years ago. she was interviewing Angelina Jolie, who was extremely serious when discussing adoptions and Curry had that blantantly feigned serious demeanor when interviewing her, desperately searching for the "comfortable" questions. i couldn't watch.

Curry's defining moment for me was years ago. she was interviewing Angelina Jolie, who was extremely serious when discussing adoptions

As an adoptee I don't think I could watch Angela Jolie talk seriously about adoption, either....

I feel bad for people who use these things as news sources.

Its not a news source....its a morning magazine show...entertainment, publicity and some information with a news headline segment. Looking at it as a news show is a mistake...

I've left it running in the mornings.

The problem for Today and most of CNN is they rush to revamp every time ratings go awry and they do it with such desperation it turns into a public debacle - making them look even worse in the long run.

Then by the time the revamp happens and it fails to take they scramble again.

This is not the smartest way to conduct business from a brand management perspective.

It's just a matter of personal taste but I prefer actual news to info-tainment/morning variety shows or whatever genre the Today Show and it's ilk fall under.

When the cable shows descend into jibber jabber, which they frequently do, I turn on the local news to catch the weather and to find out what's happening in town that day.

Most mornings are a combination of all three with a preference for international news when I can find it.

I'm sleeping during the morning shows myself. Occassionaly I have to get up and go to work somewhere early, but when that happens, all I can manage is to get up, and go to work early. Turning on the TV is the last thing on my mind.

But if CBS ever gets rid of Bruce and Linda on the weekend edition of "Late Night" I'm gonna be really pissed.

If you like "actual news", you should probably stop watching CNN and MSNBC. And no, I'm not a FOX fan either. They all suck. Bad.

Your reference to international news is a damn good start. I like watching BBC America and also Euro News. Both cover US issues very well, and you also get to see what's going on outside of the US.

NBC's abandoned the whole journalistic ethics thing, and are a joke because of their obvious spin. I guess I'll start watching the today show when it's hosted by Victorias' Secret models.

For me, the program serves the same purpose in the morning as the radio used to do years back. It provides a bit of gossipy chatter about stuff and is a pleasant background while I prepare my breakfast, get ready and collect my workstuff. That's why I find it a bit unnecessarily cut-throat to axe Ann Curry. She was at least as pleasant, photogenic, and competent at this seemingly easy job as any of the rest of them. It gives the impression that the producers think we all take the program far more seriously than we do. It doesn't matter whether Ann Curry is/is not a killer presenter - the show doesn't require such a person. Pleasant and personable - that'll do. If the ratings have fallen, I doubt it's because the public are airing their consititutional right to expect the very best in morning shows; instead, I'd guess that people might want a bit of change and watch one of the other options for a while. There was no need to press the panic button and smash the self-esteem of one of their longest-standing presenters in the process.

Savannah is awesome. Super smart, quick & cute. She's perfect for it IMO.

Erin Burnette is hot, but she's gone way too far out on a limb defending the banks/wall street firms that got us into this economic crisis. Maybe a lot of people never saw her on CNBC but she was always out of her league but acting like she owned the role. She's ambitious, but just not a very good analyst... Savannah is a far better choice IMO, the best since Couric.

All that said, I can't stand Lauer and rarely ever watch any of the morning shows. I do pay attention to who's doing what for what networks though.

Savannah is annoying with her glasses. If it's a serious story, she will wear glasses to seem serious, and when it's a lite story, she takes them off.

Ann is too much of a journalist for that show. She just doesn't work for that kind of crap. 90% of the Today show consists of interviewing reality stars and other fluff which isn't her thing. I've met her a couple times back in the day on work stuff and she's cool as hell and a great journalist.

She did the parts I liked, well.

As for her inability to schmooze with the celebrities that came by or didn't have any enthusiasm for some goofball cooking, why should I care? I felt the same way she did; I'd have looked just as bored. I could empathize.

I'm not the target audience, but I did watch when I knew she was there. Now, you can color me gone. I might've defaulted to NBC before at a random hour; now, not a chance.

I do not mean to disagree with the poster above; his post just sorts falls ahead of mine. She's real; she's got a sense about her, that there's a genuine person there not some ridiculous "package" like Vieira or Diane Sawyer. Phew!

The Today Show is incredibly impressive as it somehow manages to be less intelligent than your typical local morning news show (ie - the Fox "Wakeup" show they have in every major market). If every viewer of the Today Show would instead follow an ant around their kitchen for 2 hours, they would be smarter for it.

So it's like she didn't know that Colber' is mocking the Matt Lousy in the Eyeglasses look, and thinks people are 'really supposed to do that.

LOUSY: "Savannah- try these glasses on- ratings go up 2.4 points when I do"
SAVANNAH: "Really? WOW!"
LOUSY: (((sssshh "I'm sending this to Colber'")))

I'm to the point that I think all the morning shows have gotten unwatchable. Even CBS move to hire Charlie Rose and make their news more "serious" - its still a freaking happy happy morning news show.

I'm about to just start listening to BBC America and hear what's actually really going on in the world.
