I've got an ES-339 that I love to play but the pickups are just slightly bitter. What are some great (not good) options for pickup upgrades?

Check these out: T-Buckers.
I just ordered the bridge position for my Heritage 535. Affordable too!

I really love the classic 57's in my 336

Bare Knuckle Stormy Mondays were recommended by my high end luth.
He also recommended the callaham abr bridge and the alum stop.
Also I got the maple pup rings.
PS: lose the memphis wiring.

Lollar Imperials are amazing, they may literally be my favorite pickup of all time. Can't go wrong with em.

Sheptone Tributes are excellent in a 339!

Throbaks are the best PAF clones i have tried. But I would also suggest a set of WCR Crossroads.

Try Duncan Antiquity's, Got them in my LP and my ES-333
I think Antiquity's are one of the best ALL Around P/U's available for anything..YMMV
or If you prefer a P=90 style p/u ,
I've got Duncan Phat-Cats in my 339..it sounds GREAT.
I guess it depends on what you're looking for, tone wise, and what style of music you play
I play R&R and Blues, The above mentioned Pickups, do both... WELL!
Good luck & Cheers

My ES-339 came to me with Wolfetones already installed by the previous owner, and I can't imagine ever changing them. They're just awesome in this guitar.
It has a Marshallhead in the bridge and a Dr. Vintage in the neck, I believe. Just fantastic.

Wow! That's some good advice. Thanks. I check my guitar fund for upgrades. I forgot about the improving the bridge and tuners. Sounds like a nice project. This guitar is the only one that, of the dozens of guitars I've owned, that sounds better with a compressor.

For reference heres a list of what I have tried...
Throbaks....limited (A2s)and limited plus (A5s)...
Wolfetones Dr. V's
Bareknuckle Mules, Riff Raffs, Mississippi Queens (P-90s in humbucker size)
Wasn't a bad pickup in the bunch with the exception of the Gibsons...
For my needs I prefer the Zhangbucker Woodbucker neck in A5 and wideslugbucker bridge in A2...they bring out the acoustic tone of my instrument like none of the above ever did...my new fave. humbuckers....

Nice advice. Now I'm thinking I should start with wiring and bridge. Anyone have a link to a wiring upgrade?

RS Guitar and Martin Six String Customs sell wiring upgrades. As for pickups, if I were you I would narrow it down to one particular winder but not any particular pickup model. Call that winder, explain everything and see which pickup/configuration they recommend.
