Edit: assuming the strat is in mint condition, sounds good and feels good, what would be a fair price on this guitar?

seller does not have hard case or any paperwork

1996 Fender American Standard Stratocaster Made in USA Sunburst in excellent condition w/gig bag.

Honestly....the best "deal" is the guitar that feels/sounds the "best" to you. But if I was choosing, I'd go for the $550 Strat, because you can still have room for pickup upgrades or a pro set-up if you want, and still be in the $700-$750 range total....then you'd have something more tailored to your needs.

any recommendations on possible pickup upgrade If I go for the cheaper one?

(im getting the guitar as a gift for my dad, I know little about them)

The stock pickups are fine as they are. If your dad doesn't like them it should be up to him to decide what he feels sound best for whatever music he plays. Nice gift.

Just got a mint '96 american std strat in the early spring. The stock alnico 5 pickups are good and do not need to be changed.

The first one is a non-trem, hard tail. That puts it out of the running for me.
The $550 guitar doesn't look right somehow.
The '99 and '96 are worth checking into.
Negotiate for the best possible price.

how does a hardtail difffer from a non-hardtail in sound?

$550 one has been sold already

I like the $550 one too.

They will sound really, really close....but the Hardtail will have better tuning stability. However....you give up the cool effect you get from a Trem system. And when they are set up right....they stay in tune just fine (I own 4 of them).

So....as far as the Strats that are left.........I'd go for the one with Dimarzio's (and ask if he has the stock pickups to throw in the deal). Otherwise, bring $650 cash with you....play it to see if you like it.......then make him the offer. If he doesn't take it.....walk. And please make sure you meet ANYONE in a safe area.

The "best deal" would be the one with the best subjective tone & feel. If a guitar doesn't have "it", the price is meaningless. Only one way to know IMO.

what price should I be looking at for this guitar?
