Been a Tacoma guy for a long time, owned a bunch of them.
All mine were/are pre-Fender FWIW.

yeah, the pre Fender models were are the best. i had a first year one that was just beautiful. of course an SP2 fell on it at a gig and broke the headstock off but the split went down behind the nut, missing the fingerboard so i got her fixed up and she still sounds amazing. but yes, you could say i definitely love mine, otherwise i would have thrown it in the trash.

Wow - that blows.
I'ved owned quite a few, the one that stuck is a DR-38 that was an artist relations guitar for Gary "Bisquit" Davis; he toured it pretty extensively behind Dolly Parton. Incredible guitar.

What about the Olympia guitars? I thought the OD-10S might be cool, but I've never played one...

I have a pre-Fender Tacoma DR-20. Wonderful guitar!

I own a real low serial number Road King, the dreadnought sized Chief. It has the most comfortable neck ever. I get compliments everywhere on its tone.
The singer from my old band and I went to weekly open mics for a long time and every night a random person would say how blown away they were. Not bad for $500 accoustic. Its one of the few guitars that I will keep forever.

I've got a pre-fender DM-18 that has been kept over a Gibson Hummingbird, Taylor 615, and a Martin HD-28V. Not that those other guitars sounded bad, they just didn't sound any better than the Tacoma.

I have a Tacoma DM-1812 12-String and have no complaints whatsoever. It sounds and plays great and has a build quality shoulder to shoulder with my D-41 or 914-C. Highly recommended! :BEER

Don't know a whole lot about its bigger brothers, as I haven't played 'em much, but my P-28 Papoose is one of the best gear purchases I ever made. It sounds so fine alongside another guitar and records so well.
I don't think you can get a new P-28 any more.

I've got a DM18 that I picked up for a song and a dance and it's a tough out...
How do know if yours is pre-fender and why is that a bad/good thing??

I am looking for a mahogany dread for bluegrass. Thinking DM14; do you think it would have the cut and projection needed for jams in comparison to Martins and Blueridges?

I have a PF-Tacoma D20 and it's a great guitar for the price.
Is the tone as fat as a Gibby or as full as a Collings or as complex as a Goodall? No way. But it is a great player with good tone.
And it cost me about $700.
Heck, me playing those other guitars would be like Steve Buchemi dating Jessica Simpson anyway.

i have the Baritone and a 5-String Bass, both the budget-version, both pre-fender.
Record extremely well. esp. the baritones broad frequencyrange had me thinking quite often „what other instrument should I put in there?
brilliant stuff.

I have two Tacomas a 97 DR20 and she will hang with amy Martin or Taylor made. I also have a newer but pre Fender DM18 that is all solid wood construction that plays and sounds great. Not a canon like the 20 but has its own vibe. The 20 is a banjo killer though. Great Guitars. Shame about the fender thing though. For the $ i dont think you can find a better american made guitar.

I have a pre-fender DM18 that my bass player won in a holiday raffle at GC. I met him at the store (late as usual), and when I walked in he handed it to me and said 'here ya go'. I took it and said something like 'I don't want it'. He said 'come on, take it, it's free'.
I got down on one knee and started playing it a bit, and i'll be damned, the thing sounded and played reaaal nice. I didn't know much about Tacoma but it hooked me. Score!!!!

I know Gary. Great guy. Unbelievable banjo player and he can do things with a guitar that just make me sick!
He got the DR through us, I believe. We were the Tacoma reps at the time and the guy I work with has known him for years.

I'm a big fan of the Tacoma baritones. I don't own one (yet!), but they are incredibly inspiring to play.

I have a PK-30 from 1998. I've had more compliments on the tone and playability of that guitar than any other.

About 3 months ago, I ran across a used DM-9 at Guitar Center. It was hanging on the back of a post where one of the acoustic sales guys always hides the ones he likes the best, so I picked it up and played it. After some friendly negotiations which brought the price under $300 including an HSC, it followed me home. Put a set of Elixir Poly light/mediums on it, and took it to an outdoor jam that night ... it performs admirably. Will it outshine every Martin in sight? Nope ... I'm more realistic than that. Would I trade it head up for a good D-18? Yes, in a heartbeat. But it has great tone, with good projection so it can be heard in the crowd, and I am more than pleased. It did have some minor intonation problems, but they have improved with a little tinkering here and there.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ishmael109/MVC-010S.jpgI LOVE my Takoma. I think it's the Pkk40. I like the darker warmth of Koa on an acoustic. I picked this one up at a GuitarCenter 2 years ago. Installed a Fishman matrix pickup in it, and it sounds wonderful.

i luv's me some tacoma! i don't own one, but i work in a store that sells them, so i've played scores of them. pretty (for the most part), easy to play, and loud. i compared their acoustic bass to that crazy, 3K plus klein-designed taylor with the exotic flying braces and non-parallel surfaces, and the tacoma was just plain louder and bigger sounding.
now, has anybody played a post-fender tacoma yet? i've said before in other posts that, unlike with gibson, companies acquired by fender tend to improve, i.e., gretch, jackson. i have not played any new guilds or tacomas, but i'm optomistic.

Unfortunatley, unforseen expenses are forcing me to sell my DR 14, which is one of the best acoustics I have ever owned.
It's in the emporium if anyone is interested and priced for quick sale.

I have a DR-55. I love the sound and the playability. I had the chance to sit down and compare it with several significantly higher priced guitars. The Tacoma has an awesome sound, both acoustically and with the Fishman (factory installed). My sound guy doesn't have to do a thing on the board. He loves the sound too.

A few posts above, I actually ended up selling my beloved DR14.
Well today, I stopped by my local dealer and he has a fantastic new DM9 that he is selling really cheap. Hard to pass up a new American made, solid wood acoustic, gloss finish and OHSC for < 650 clams.
Oh yeah, it sounds pretty damn good too!

I recently picked up a PKK40 from another TGP member. I'm sure I'm still on the honeymoon, but I'm LOVING it.
Played great right out of the case. I really like the neck and the responsiveness.

I've got much love for my Tacoma DR-12 that i picked up at elderly about 6 years ago... very cool guitar with a neat story. Two experienced pro players were in there discussing the nuances of variations bracing makes in tone and they took interest in the poor college kid looking to find an affordable acoustic. A while later i had all but decided on a particular guild and was asking about having a pickup installed when one of the gentlemen brought up a used tacoma guitar and said i should give it a play, that if i didn't like it it was going home with him. I gave it a few good strums, and it was amazing, everything I wanted in an acoustic. I thanked him, and here I am today with that amazing Tacoma. Whoever you are sirs, I thank you for helping me out!
