I recently bought a 70's PR and have been experimenting with tubes. What I'd like to know is if there's any problem putting AT7's in an AX7 slot and vice versa. I ask this because the most pleasing combination I've found so far has a Mullard 4024/AT7 in V1. Although I have an AT7 in V2, which calls for an AT7, I've found good sounds with an AX7 in this slot. Are there any issues about overload, tube life, etc. I should know about.

A secondary issue. Whatever tube I put in my V2, it gets very hot, hotter than all the others by far. Is this normal?

V2 is the Reverb Driver and conducts a lot of current as it's driving the XFMR. Use a 12AT7.

You'll need the voltage gain of a 12AX7 for the Phase Inverter as the other side of it is the Tremolo tube.

Cheers,
Jon

Thanks for the info, Jon. Would you think that if I find using a 12at7 in V1 the best sound, ie. clean but with a little edge, that my amp may be running too hot. Isn't a 12ax7 preferable in V1?

V1 and other 12AX7 sockets are fine with 12AT7s, 12AY7s, etc. The reverse is often not true.
