is it hype? if not, what's the deal with this thing. I've never seen one, but the youtube vids don't blow me away. why is this held in such high regard?

How does it compare to other overdrives?

The biggest problem with this screen shot is the word "Verizon"... A crying shame I tell ya.

I tried 3 of them over a 2 year period. It does 1 thing very well. A clean amp boost. Set you amp on the verge of breakup, set the Klon to push the amp into saturation. Gets noisey if you match it up with other distortion or overdrive pedals. - There are other pedals that can do this for much less money.

It's a multiband OD, kinda, but it doesn't seem like many people like to use the drive. I like to use overdrive on the high mid + frequencies on bass, but on guitar I tend not to mess with overdrive in a pedal. Unless it's something designed to push the amp. Which it seems is how many use a Klon! heh. To be honest I don't really have any interest in them to get a sound I like, but people really seem to love them - for a number of reasons I think it's an objectively interesting pedal. If zombie horses are a protected species - OP, expect to hear a knock on your door for this mistreatment ;)

They're expensive and they look cool.

Compared to other overdrives they're more expensive and look way cooler.

In common with other overdrives, its usefulness is inversely proportional to the usefulness of the rest of the rig.

If you have one, it raises your TGP cred to the nth degree.

Depending upon who you ask, it's either the best OD ever created or it's the most over hyped POS. Owning a Klon and/or the inabililty to buy a Klon often dictates which side of the fence opinions fall on.

Already 2 pages of non-responses. That's the POWER of the Klon!

There were at least a couple of legitimate responses along the way... I heard the Aluminum Falcon was the way to go anyway!

It's an interesting and well built overdrive, in the top 2 or three of all the ones I've tried (and that amounts to hundreds). It ISN'T worth $1.5k, or even $500 to me. But since I have one, I'm keeping it... Instant TGP cred!

Almost as much as having a Timmy....

Nailed it. It's the best in its class for what it does. That said, I don't think it's worth more then its original dealer asking price.

I used one with a Maz 18 for a long time. Set to be a boost with just the smallest amount of breakup (Gain below 9 o'clock) it added a great fullness to the bottom end and basically became an "always on" pedal. With other amps, I haven't felt like it was needed so I let it go. The only setting I liked it in was the boost/very low gain. For more gain, I had many other overdrives that I preferred.

And yes, it looks very cool.

Nothing is better for pushing a tweed amp into the happy zone like the klon. That was my experience. In the end it was worth more to take advantage of the senseless hype and sell it to fund more important gear at the time.

Or it's just a pretty good OD. Over-generalizations are the norm around here though. ;)

I really like my Klone, and the other variations I've tried. It's not the single greatest thing I've ever used, but I enjoy it a lot in live applications.

Actually, I own nine of them. I just wanted an excuse to talk about them some more. I think of Velbin's "envidious consumption". Man, I'm so great. :)

I sort of regret this post. If I'd only looked, I could have found the many other posts that are already out there on this. Oh, well...

So, how 'bout the thing with the ball that the guy on that sports team did?

next up: How does the Klon affect John Mayer's Dumble?

Klon pretty much cancels the Dumble.

They're OK with Fender amps for playing parts, but like I said before, OD's are increasingly useful as the quality of the rest of the rig decreases. . .

Or an increasingly convenient band-aid for the wrong guitar into the wrong amp in the wrong band for the tune you're covering.

Basically, if there's a chip in it, there's something better.

Just the nature of the thing.

I think the answer to your question is that people pay 1200 dollars from them!
