View Full Version : Anyone else lovin' their Grosh Retro Classic?

I recently got a GRC from Paul P. on the forum, and played it at church yesterday. I've been noodling in the basement for a few weeks, and I'm very happy with the vintage sounds and modern neck feel! Mine has a 1-11/16" nut width and big frets, standard medium neck carve, alder and rosewood... It has Suhr pups, noisey but man do they quack!

I've probably owned 20 Strats over the last 20 years - US and MIJ Fenders, G&L's, Shecters, and other high-quality medium-priced guitars, and finally paid the price for a nice one. I'm sure this one will be in the quiver for quite a while!

Anyone else enjoying their Grosh?

Yes, I love mine as well. Wonderful broken-in feeling right out of the box. I have a custom seafoam green w/brazilian fretboard. Lovely '60's vibe....

I love my Groshs - feel, tone, and look is it for me. I've found over the years my personal spec is a couple of Lollars in the neck and middle, with a SD Little Screamin Demon h/b in the bridge - makes for the best sounding leads and sweetest sounding rhythms combined in one guitar I've yet to experience in all my years of playing.

Lollar Specials in this one:

and Blondes in the Seafoam:

Yep, I've tried the rest and kept the best. The neck had me at "Hello". Fralin Blues in one, Lollar Blackface/Special in the other. Both alder/rosewood.

Beautiful guitars, Lightnin. Now I'm gassin' for another.

I had a Grosh strat at one point and liked it alot but it didn't stick with me... I could definitely see getting another sometime...

Believe it or not, the best sounding Strat I've ever had is my G&L S-500 (!), better than the Grosh, Suhrs and Fender Custom Shops that have passed through this house..... but that's not gonna keep me from getting another Grosh or Suhr or Fender CS sometime ;)

First I'm getting a Lentz (or two :)), but Grosh is real high up on my radar screen

I love my 2 Retro Classics - one is alder and the other is ash. I love them so much they are my only 2 electrics at this time. Outstanding guitars indeed!

Which humbuckers have you found work especially well in the Retro Classics? I think I am going to drop one into my alder RC. I am currently considering a Fralin Umbucker or a Suhr DSV.

I have a Lollar Imperial in the bridge of my RC, and I like it a lot. It balances well with the Lollar Special single coils in the neck and the middle.

...now that sounds familiar. ;) Hope you are enjoying the guitar Don!

I know that 1radicalron's black Grosh has a Tom Holmes 456 in the bridge and a Fralin Steelpole in the neck and super jumbo frets. It is a rock machine!

Don does great work!

Lollar Specials in the neck and middle seem to be a popular choice - might have to step up from my Lollar Blackface.

They aren't too hot for good blues work are they?

Beautiful guitars everyone - haven't seen many tie dyes from Don for awhile. I guess they aren't that popular, but I really like them. Here's one I talked Stu at Fat Sound into selling me a few years ago

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d121/LightninBoy/Tie%20Dye/chris-m-retro-tie-dye_lg.jpg

Red Lizard - I personally don't find the Specials to be overly hot for blues in the ash / maple guitar I have them in, not sure how they'd sound in an alder - r/w though. I prefer the Blondes that are in the Seafoam - they handle overdrive really nicely - and clean they're exceptionally sweet sounding. I like them enough that ordered another set last week although I've been really tempted to try some others out.

I don't own one, but I will some day. Best "strat" I ever laid my hands on was a Grosh Retro Classic owned by one of the guys at Techstar in Nashville. Some day!

I have 3 RCs, love them. I think they are very underrated. I also have a VT and a Setneck, all 5 are incredible. I also own, Gibson, Baker, Tyler and others, and the Grosh guitars are easily in the same league as all of them.

alder/RW
ash/maple

Bought both used, and for the money they were the finest Strat style guitars I could find. Don's fretwork is some of the best I've seen on guitars at any price.

If I let the alder/RW go, it will only be because the neck profile is not what I've come to prefer over time.

I've let a couple go for that reason. I keep telling myself to stick to medium C and nothing larger, but some are just too tempting and I easily laspe into denial.

I can't quite tell from the pics -- does Don do a little modification to the standard Strat body? They look close but a little different.

Yes, the body size and shape is shlightly different. They are about 7/8 the size of a standard strat body in profile (thickness is the same I think). Slightly more trim at the waist and the horns are a bit more pointed.

Here is my Grosh. Its a custom job with dual radius (c up high to v down low) maple tele neck, alder start body, tele controls and dimarzio twang king pup in the neck, a frailin in the middle and a dimazio ? in the bridge. Its been my main guitar for about 5 years. Its the best playing guitar i have ever had. I think grosh makes a fine product indeed!

Yikes. That is the coolest, most arresting-looking Tele/Strat hybrid I've seen! On one hand it looks perfectly natural, on the other, it's really kind of disorienting, like a jackalope or something.

Thank you, I like it because, im my head at least, it combines the coolest features of each guitar. I have thought of getting grosh to make another neck to th esame dimensions but with a large late 60's strat style headstock......just for kicks.......
Thanks again!

Grosh built me a Retro that weighs 6.75 lbs ... I can't use anything heavier, it had to be under 7 lbs. What a great guitar it is ... I just put all single coil size Duncan buckers in it to do classic rock, and it sounds great. One of the best guitars I have personally owned. The tone and sustain are incredible. I went with alder, although he suggested swamp ash.

I just picked up a Retro Classic and I'm very impressed. It will not displace my Suhrs, but will be added to the arsenal. The Grosh has an equally cool, yet different, mojo than a Suhr... slightly more vintage vibe going on.... and I love the feel of the nitro finish. Obviously it's not a durable as the poly finish Suhr uses, but it is great for the vintage look and feel.

Olympic White, Alder, Maple (sorry, no picture). I've had the guitar since 1999 and still play it all the time. Years ago, a vintage dealer who also sold Grosh guitars, put it something like: Groshs sound better than 7 out of 10 vintage Fenders I come across and play better than 9 out of 10. This is a viewpoint that, based upon my experience, seems true. Given what vintage Strats sell for, Grosh strats offer a great way to get great strat tone without the vintage price tag.

I've played a few Grosh guitars and LOVED them. Absolutely everything I wanted in a strat. But I can't hang with the small body style. I really wish he made some full size. I'm 6'5" and a little guitar looks ridiculous on me. Unfortunately, size matters here in LA. Maybe a Grosh and a little silicone?

Love my Grosh RC. Sounds phenomenal. I think Don subtly improved on the Fender Strat body shape, too.

+1 on that. I think the grosh take on the strat shape is much more refined and better executed than fender ever was. Most strats look like wood shop projects compared to my grosh!

Just bought a Grosh T from Stu at Fat Sound Guitars. Butterscotch with a Fralin Humbucker in the neck. I cannot wait for its arrival.

By the way, GREAT service from Stu. Asked me how I wanted it set up prior to shipment and whether I wanted signature verification for delivery.

OK, after reading this thread and playing my Grosh T last night, I just traded a taylor acoustic in for this http://www.wildwoodguitars.com/electrics/grosh/dg_1637/dg_1637.html (http://www.wildwoodguitars.com/electrics/grosh/dg_1637/dg_1637.html)

If it's not still on the website, it's an Olympic White Classic, rosewood neck, Fralins, Large Round C and 6100 Frets. Will be getting it in a couple weeks once UPS delivers my trade and vis versa. For those about to rock, we salute you!

Steve,

Really glad to hear you're loving the T so much - makes the loss of such a great guitar much easier to deal with actually. Wouldn't have ever considered selling that one were it not for the wrist problems the flat top created for me - need contours on everything these days. Otherwise, I'd have been :NUTS to sell her...

Congratulations on your latest addition - I'm sure you'll be equally impressed.
