Okay, maybe I'm late to the ball again (as usual), but has anybody actually played one of these things?!?!? The sound clips at the website (www.mpamp.com (http://www.mpamp.com/) - clickon "tone") are absolutely sick. There's only one dealer in the US, no prices listed. All that said, YOWSA DAD! I gotta try one of these?
Anybody out there lucky enough to have experienced one?

Eero just emailed me with the price.
To paraphrase my teenage daughter - "Like, OMG!!!!"
Stupid money, sick stupid money... Tone to die for, but that's exactly what'll happen one my wife finds out, if I spend that kinda loot on an amp. I could unload lots of equipment.... WHOA!!! The room is spinnin'... It's only a Fuchs and a Two Rock in price - heck, that ain't much - right? RIGHT?!? Tattinger tastes, Bass Ale wallet....
I'm gonna have to content myself with a 2555 Jubilee, a Budda, and a Fuchs for now...
(saying this, but thinkin - "what could I unload to come up with the money?"

If you act now, you can save a couple hundred dollars...
I read the email and my left eye began to tear. I mean my bloody eye stopped workin' briefly upon reading that price. DAAAAANNNGGGG!!!! Obviously I'm far too middle-class in my guitar-toy budget. Am I in the wrong neighborhood - or do I have company here? Is the US dollar suckin' wind that badly against foreign currency? HOLY COW BATMAN!
Okay, that's only three Suhr Strats - not out of the question... But what the hell is the question?!?!?
Whoa!

Hmmmm... - $3650. I could almost do that and live....ALMOST. The Mrs would still remove my spleen with a spoon. Is it possible to play when you're "nearly dead"?

Not really, it's bloody expensive in Scandinavia too and the thing is made here. I'd say it's an amp for people with a much deeper wallet than most. :)
That said, if I won in the lottery I could see myself buying one - because I could. Unfortunately no such luck yet... :jo

:eek:So, I just bought an almost mint vintage 1965 BF Fender Pro reverb and it isn't even half the cost of the discount used price of that amp...
In fact my two 1965 vintage fenders, my Bandmaster reverb AND my matchless Lighting combined all have a value less than that amp new...
I just don't need (want) anything with that stupid a price tag. I could buy a Rocca and have money left over for effects... wait I wouldn’t even need effects...
COME ON, if your main gig isn't playing guitar and you earn less than a hundred grand a year YOU CAN NOT JUSTIFTY THAT DOUGH!!!!!
I'll take - oh I don't know - a vintage deluxe or a blues breaker, or a bassman or anything that is a half the cost. If you can’t sound good with a tweed deluxe or a bassman you don't need this amp - you need GUTAR LESSONS!

I agree with this part of your post:
"In fact my two 1965 vintage fenders, my Bandmaster reverb AND my matchless Lighting combined all have a value less than that amp new..."
Monetary and utility value. The price is high, extremely high, and frankly too high for me. But this amp is a special thing. I've heard it twice now. The first time it was so low in volume that I was sort of non-plussed,, ehh...? But this last time it utterly beguiled me. I'm haunted, sort of scamming, gassing, thinking my way around in the familiar pattern: "what would I have to give up to nail down one of these puppies" kind of thinking. Dayum!
I'm pretty cynical, have owned the archetypical vintage amps, Fender, Marshall, Orange. Each of them is great in its own way, but the MP combines the ability to mimic lots of the classics but then also has the ability to produce otherworldly gain sounds that just make you grin and can make the hair stand up on your neck, plus there is volume control. Volume control is the Achilles heel of most of the great vintage amplifiers. The HotPlate and other great attenuators really help a lot. But you do give up a significant portion of the magic of those classics when you attenuate.
The MP is just the right thing for some players. And tons of people right here on this board have one hell of a lot more than 6K stacked up in amps that don't touch the magic of the MP to my ears anyway. But it has to match the intentions, commitment and expectations of a given player. If it was closer to 2k I would have one. No question about it. I would never question the wisdom or judgment of a player who chose to spend the money to buy a Mad Professor amp. The craftsmanship is impeccable and the work that has gone into the circuit is sublime.

Not bagging on the amp - just the price.

First, I understand the haunting of a tone... My lightning did that to me. But as far as the price, lets face it - it is a tool. If you have the dough and you will use the thing appropriately then great; get what ever it is. But for that price you can own a few of the archetypical amp that will appreciate in value AND... you don't need one amp for all occasions - you can have THE right amp for THE occasion.
Case in point; A practice champ or Princeton, a medium deluxe or 18 watter good for medium indoor gigs and a 40 - 100 watter for louder or outdoor gigs. I play every week and these are the realistic situations and needs. Most people don't know the gear and don't care unless you are too loud or can't be heard over he drummer.

Now I can ruminate.
That is a GREAT sounding amp. Worth that kind of money? Not to me. But others will differ. It does have a tone that makes you think it over. And the 'bottom line...it's a tool' resonates with me. Get good or even great equipment, and let your fingers do the talking.
After the initial buzz, these will go for around $2k on the used market. I may pick one up then.

I think I'll "settle" for a Budda Superddrive 45 (through a Bogner 4x12 cab that amp is absolutely sinister) and take my old lady to the islands for a winter getaway with the change left over. Like somebody else here said - that's a lottery amp.

I sold lots of guitars and amps that I really liked/loved/eventually got back. So that doesn't necessarily mean that Mike didn't love the amp.
Exactly.
I've sold a number of good amps or guitars to raise cash for ones I wanted more than the ones I had.
Hell, I'm offing a BF Pro and a BF Vibrolux Reverb for that reason. They're great amps, I've had 'em for a long time, but they don't do what a CAE-100 ODS or a Mad Professor amp can do, and I'm interested in thinning the 'herd' and changing it's 'flavors' to have more different sounds and less duplication. I've got 2 Tone Kings, the BF Pro, BFVR - kind of 4 takes on the same sound, so I'd be interested in something like an MP or CAE-100 ODS.
I have a Martin "Eric Clapton" model acoustic - triple "O" size, records great, but lately I haven't been recording much, more live, so I'm thinking of trading it for a dreadnought sized guitar - they're louder live and boomier, but that's what would work for me now since I'm doing more live stuff.
My thinking lately is something like this:
If I'm gonna have an amp around that I don't use that much, I'd rather have something interesting like an Orange 80W, or a CAE-100, MP, blah blah blah. Something that sounds different from everything else I own.
I do get set in my ways sometimes - not saying anyone else is, and I get 'stuck' in a sound. I take years to decide to switch amps. But there are folks ( many TGP'ers in fact - GRIN) who change amps like I change shirts.
If they have the budget to be an amp whore, more power to 'em. "Justifying" the purchase is NOT something that everyone needs to do. If you have the money, and you want to spend it, there's nothing wrong with that. God know I have a hard time doing it, but there are those who's psyche's are not as, er, encumbered by this kind of thinking as my own tortured thrifty soul.
Makes me jealous.
If the market will bear the price, and the seller and buyer needs are both met, surely that's not a problem for those who don't want to participate in it. I admit I feel better about this attitude when it's a small, high quality custom amp like the Mad Professor (which has simply sick build quality, and the best master volume I think I've ever heard) than when it's something like a '59 Les Paul that demand from rich people has priced out of the market for us 'normal' types.
My $.02. I know what you're saying about the $$ - it's WAY high.
I spoke with Josh on Friday - he plugged in and played a Chapin Strat through the Map Professor amp over the phone for me. Josh is really cool cat, and freakin' GREAT guitar player, and the MP amp and Chapin guitar together sounded like heaven on earth.
Works for me, Dana

Mike, didn't you have a two-rock that compared favorably? Which model was that?
MikeyG
02-25-2006, 06:19 PM
The amp it reminded me most of was the Bruno Super 100. But it was even more versatile in the overdrive dept than the Bruno ...
It can definitely get Two Rock tones, but can also be a rock monster too.
It has a feel when you're playing that's indescribable ...

From what I understand (for an article I read), some of the guts are covered / disguised in black goop as you might expect in a pedal.

My Cs-40 ended my amp search. I haven't even thought about another amp since I got mine a couple years ago. Got mine on the forum for 3500 used two years ago. What I really like about it is you can copy almost any tone from 50's stuff to modern metal and the high gain channel is really tight. No regrets!

I have a picture of the guts I will post. The black goop is only on the FET circuit. Man the construction is second to none, they call is submarine spec contruction. Sounds good to me!.

It surely was more easily amp to tweak, but CS-40 has it's strenghts in tuning, it does exactly what you want and more. But you REALLY have to know it's tricks, otherwise one has no clue what he is talking about.
