On a 1/4 inch plug for connecting a speaker is the tip or the shoulder positive?

Theoretically, unless you're using more than one speaker, how you wire a speaker plug should make no difference. However, practically speaking, depending on the absolute phase of your particular amp, the speaker wiring could possibly sound better one way than the other. The theory is that if the speaker moves forward on the initial string attack, the amp will have more presence than if the speaker initially moves backwards. So, being that amps have a different number of preamp stages in them (thus different absolute phase), it might be to your benefit to try wiring your speaker both ways to see if one way sounds better than the other.

Of course, if you use more than one speaker, you also have to make sure that all speakers are in phase with each other or you'll end up with a dead hollow sound.
