Which mic company do you end up recording your pro stuff the first?

You forgot one choice:

The right one.

Could be a SM-58, could be a Soundelux 251.

You never know until you try out a few.

I've always had success with an AKG414/ULS

This is a fool's bet, as Loudboy pointed out.

Here,as most everywhere in music and the studio, one size does not fit all.

True, but for the sake of argument, let's assume there HAD to be one, which must be what the poster is asking.

I most often use a U47 because it makes almost anything sound great. A 251 would take 2nd place. BUT, for male vocals, the list would be switched with a 251 in top place.

Neumann U47 for me personally. For others, depends on their voice. I like to put a couple up and listen.

BLUE! Beat out the nice stock of vintage Neumanns in the studio, it just has this character that makes male vocals soar over the mix.

Blue Mouse is my favorite for male vox.

I love my Neumann, but its not one of the new ones... The older ones sound much better to me. They messed up the electronics on the newer ones........

You said it. In fact, it's not even the same "they" that make up the Neumann company anymore, and the guts of these mics use many different and certainly not "better" components. Somewhere along the way, some genius said, "hey, wouldn't we do better financially if we used part X instead of part Y" and it's never been the same since.
