I'm going to be building a few LP's and LP Specials (hobby), and a friend was saying that he wished that there was a LP with a Fender (long) scale. I'm thinking of doing a LP Special with an Alnico pup in the neck, and possibly a coil tap or out of phase switch for a thinner sound, but besides that i've always considered the LP Special to be about perfect. I do like the feel of ebony boards, also, like on LP Customs. Other than that, i like both models as is . Perhaps some other wood combinations would dleiver some tonal magic (i.e. Walnut top or back)?

Any ideas? i would be very interested in any new ideas, or a combination of old ideas not tried before.

As a LP guy from way back, a contoured heel would be very nice IMHO.
Other than that, I find LPs to be pretty much THERE already for me.

A tremelo/whammy bar that's different from a Bigsby

I'd agree it's pretty much there. I do like the Walnut top with an Ebony board. I believe that would be a beautiful combination visually.

Maybe a coil tap/onboard preamp/piezo...it's probably all been done before, but that shouldn't stop you.

My Slash LP has a piezo, with a 3-position switch that lets you choose magnetic pup only, blend, or piezo only.

A coil split feature, using a push-pull knob, would be really cool.

I would move the toggle switch to the bottom, like the SG. Over the years there have been different models where this was done but it never caught on in the Std. and above line.

Contoured heal, light weight 6lbs, carbon reinforced back and neck, hard stainless frets, 6 on a side locking tuners, no fret markers on the front, and 25.5 scale.

A bone nut should come standard. I put one on both my R9 and my classic. It makes a big difference.

How about contouring the back and top like a Strat?

I've played a Les Paul for 26 years, and it's always been my main guitar and favorite. Two weeks ago, I got an SG. After playing the SG for a little while, the LP feels bulky when I strap it back on!

Heel. If anything.

No coil tap. You don't play a Les Paul for Coil sounds. It's pretty much perfect as it is.
