Hi there,

my Traynor has developed a nasty buzz... There is little to no guitar signal getting through, just the loud buzzing... This isn't just single coil noise or ground loop I don't think... Any ideas? EL84s are relatively new Harmas. The pre-amp tubes are a bit older, I'll check them all when I get home from work, but any suggestions?

Check the easy stuff first. Swap out each of the smaller tubes. What you're describing could be a cathode to filament short. But it could also be several other things - most of which are minor.

Try it with no guitar cable plugged into the amp.

Is the amp a recent Traynor or an old one? If old, it may be a filter or bias cap issue.

Remove the phase inverter tube, the preamp tube closest to the power tubes. Try the amp. If the hum is gone, the problem is one of the preamp tubes or something else in the preamp. If the hum remains, the problem is a power tube or something in the power section or power supply.

Check your input jack. If it's not "catching" your cable, you could have a sprung input. Newer amps with the cheap plastic input jacks often have this problem.
