View Full Version : HarryJ on Findlay's Tune (the self-indulgent version)

Hey folks,
I recorded a second version of John Findlay's very cool tune "Ray's Avenue"
My first version was more in the "safe" blues vein, more appropriate for the tune really.
This version is significantly different... For one thing it was John's "scratch track vocals"... I would say print worthy... No?
I feel this is one of my better recorded guitar tones... I'm rarely content :-)

By all means if you have not checked out John's site... DO! ...The guy is nothing short of amazing IMHO

Best tone yet. Great playing as usual and what I love is that there is nothing usual about your playing.

Just killing Harry... I didn't think you could top your first take..(shows what I know)......Tone and playing was the bomb!..You really have an original kicking guitar voice ..proud Track!
P.S.
was the barber tone press involved? I am really wanting to check one of those out, the blend knob sounds like the deal......

Maybe the low number of posts is because others are still picking their jaws up off the floor.....so stunned, they don't know what to say??
Mr. J!! No suckin' here!!!! Bugslayer's got it right; you should be more self-indulgent (which, IMHO, translates to "Playin' ur butt off"!!!!)
You SO rock!!!

Hey thanks guys :-)
Since it the gear page... here's 'da gear:
That was my 'supa sweet '63 Melody Maker using the Dimarzio ToneZone single sized bridge pickup with tone set to 6, I switched to parallel mode a few times as well. All other tonal variations were me picking in various areas of the string, and moving the tone knob a touch.
I went for a more saturated warmer tone using my trusty Sans Amp but this time I also used a cool little tone booster simply called "Meat" by Toadworks. I didn't need any additional compression from the Tone Press. Into the usual clean low volume Marshall 50.

:-) Thx guys
Ryan,
I used your "Meat" (so to speak dude)... to boost the Sans Amp. Added a very nice honk to the tone for sure.
I have a question for you if I may. I'm curious, is there an internal trim pot to adjust the amount of fat? I tried it with my archtop and found that just clicking the fat on, was a bit too much. Could you recommend a resistor or pot change mod? I really like this box.

Hi Harry
There's no internal trim pot - but the resistor in question is R18:
http://baremetalaudio.com/toadworksusa/images/mods/MEAT-FatReductionMod.gif
The value is currently 100K, just increase it to whatever you prefer - increasing R18 will reduce the overall Fat in the mix.
Alternatively, we get requests from people on how to mod their MEAT for more overall volume. For those people, the mod is:
http://baremetalaudio.com/toadworksusa/images/mods/MEAT-LevelIncreaseMod.gif
Please note that the values in the image above are NOT the current values, these are the "mod-to" values. Also, the op-amp change is to Mouser part # 511-TS952IN (http://www.mouser.com/index.cfm?handler=displayproduct&lstdispproductid=334114&e_categoryid=268&e_pcodeid=51123)
You could also do a combination of mods - do the Level Increase mod, and then tweak R18 to your preference...

Hey thx Glen :-)
Ryan,
Thx for the mod tips. I think I'll pop a trim pot where R18 is and find the sweet spot for my setup :-)
