Any scoop on Minneapolis? I'm going to be there for a couple of weeks and would like to check out the blues jams and gear shops... looks like they have jams on Mon, Tues, Wed, Thu, and Sunday - which are the best?
http://www.mnblues.com/jams.html
Any must-see local players? Hopefully Cool Disposition or the Rough Cuts are playing somewhere.
I know about Willies Guitars and want to stop in there for sure.
Thanks for any heads up!

nicky a. no go for me. i have a date that night. billy is great though! love his cheapo guitars too, he makes them sound great.
No sweat, bro's Ryan-Mike-n-Eric...figured I'd toss it out there! MikeLaw- congrats on the date - GIT SUM!!:rotflmaoYou're right about Billy- he also has the lowest action and lightest strings EVER on those Chinese axes....still plays gorgeous slide, though.
Fretshop- Heard the NJ State Gov. came to a settlement- are you all set? I'd love to meet up witcha, but I'm heading for Canada playing guitar w/Mike Welch & his band (Brad Halleen on bass, Marty Richards on drums) at the Mont Tremblant Blues Fest. Cotton's headlining w/Darrell on vox!! Can't wait for the hang afterwards! Mucho Photos.....

I used to get to the cities alot when I was in college in Ames. Americian Guitar Boutique is over by Willies and sometimes has some cool stuff. Encore and Twintown in uptown have vintage stuff.
Here is the webpage for twin town
http://www.twintown.com/
Solidbody is way cool for high end vintage!
http://www.solidbodyguitar.com/index.html
Daves is a day drive out of town (about 2 hrs from the cities) and has great inventory and a heck of a vintage guitar and amp collection upstairs.
http://www.davesguitar.com/
I looked on pollstar.com for blues around....not much in July....Lamont Cranston. August looks more promising with some cool shows. The T-birds are playing at the State Fair at the end of the month.

TGIFriday live track... :roll
Here's Kim Wilson with Rusty Zinn and Billy Flynn with Richard Innes and Larry Taylor. Recorded at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix in February 1999. This was an outtake from Kim's Smokin' Joint CD that turned up on a compilation of live tracks recorded at the RR called "Rhythm Room Blues" on Hightone Records.

Mike/Eric - nice pics, nice guitars.
The seller of that ex-Watson H62 on ebay last week turned out to be the same local guy I bought an H70 Meteor from last year. We talked and ended up doing a deal involving p/ex of some of my stuff that he wanted. Also the fact that it wouldn't have to be shipped helped (he's close by). As I said to a couple of the guys on here, I thought when something like that sails past your nose you got to go for it, by hook or by crook! I hope the withdrawal of the auction didn't upset any of you guys!
Anyway, I got to use the thing at a gig last night, and can confirm it plays great and has got the kind of pure old blues guitar tones that just cannot be got any other way. The neck pickup produces perfect tone for swing, the bridge pickup is pure filth in the best possible way, and both together make a killer out-of-phase racket. In fact when we kicked off a slow blues and I went for the out of phase tone, it sounded so good, so damn authentic - like T-Bone or those old George Smith records - I suddenly realised my tired old licks need a serious overhaul to bring them up to match the quality of the guitar.
It's a lot more quirky to play than I'm used to - it's very bassy, response out of the top string can be low and turning the volume down cuts out large amounts of top end, but feedback doesn't seem to be a problem and there are a lot of cool tones hidden away. My favourite so far, apart from the o-o-p slow blues thing, is a sort of satanic muffled distortion from the low strings on the treble pickup. Killer for bass runs like on 'Don't start me talkin'.
I'll be in the woodshed!

Ohhh Watson.... Not start any sh*t, but that bridge pickup in Rick's green H-44 really kicks the ass of any bridge pickup in any H-44 I've ever played or heard. Hershey or not, it's the shit. On another note, I played Jon Ross's two pickup H-44 on a couple of gigs when I was back home and it may be one of the best ones out there. Man, can Mr. Ross play too!
I'd have to agree with you Frank regarding the back pickup in Rick's stratotone. I used it on the song "I'd Be a Fool" on our "Empty Wallet" disc. Screams like a F-A-T tele. Just sick.
And yes...Jon Ross can PLAY....guitar, bass, drums, mando...

About 3.5K to 3.8K for the ones that I've come across and measured. But they sound like way more... they push the amp hard.
Hey Jankety - welcome back. I'll take yours and Eric's word for it! I'd be a Fool sounds tremendous...especially the slides down the big strings (just listened to it again)! :dude
I like Jon Ross' bass playing on the latest Kim Wilson cd, and the stuff he and Troy Gonyea did on the Hi-Fi Baby disc by Gary "Fingers" Taylor.

No kiddin' - welcome back Jankety. And no worries, you certainly aren't starting any sh*t, at least not with me. Glad you chimed in. Like I said earlier to Duke, take what wats said to me with a grain of salt. Sounds like Duke already knew they sounded great, just wanted to know what they were.
So duke, how did the FRONT model 41 pup sound on the green stratotone? Oh, and thanks for sharing that you used that guitar on I'd Be the Fool." Man, you're right. That is a big ol' fat treble sound. Dark treble at it's best. It sounds phasey at some points too - like you had the two pickups blended.

I'm not sure if I used the front pickup on that guitar for anything. I've seen him use it live though and it sounded great. I know Frank has played it a bit, so he'd know.
And yeah, it DOES sound phasey on that tune, but it was all the back pickup. I LOVE that guitar. I begged him to sell it to me. He brought it out for me to use on the next record, but I just kept forgetting to grab it. Now that I just grabbed that new H44, I'm trying to decide what type of pickup I'd put in the back.

Duke, that's one of my favorite things about vintage guitars. Their pickups (maybe it's also the electronic's contribution too, leaky caps???) often sound kinda out of phase even when only one pup is on. That is such a cool ass sound when you can get it. Man, that is a great sounding pup for sure - real warm for a back pup. What was the amp you were using?

Hey Sean, when will you be in town? It would be great to meet up.
My favorite jam in the TC's is Monday at the Minnesota Music Cafe. The Band is the Lisa Wenger band, Lisa'a a very good singer and way easy on the eyes. The band consists of Phil Schmid on guitar (Big George Jackson, Lynwood Slim, Everett Smithson) Billy Black on Doghouse (Mischo, Senders, Lynwood, etc.) Jeremy Johnson on drums (guitar with Primich lately, guitar with Big George, Mischo, Wilson a few times, drums with Lisa Wenger, Everett Smithson). The jam page at mnblues is probably out dated, check the discussion board at http://www.mnblues.com/phpbb2/index.php
Folks there will fill you in on what's where when.
The Rough Cuts have a few dates this month. Tonight, 7/08/06 we're at the infamous Viking Bar, 19th and Riverside.
Shoot me a note at theroughcuts-at-comcast-dot-net and I'll send you the schedule and any links I can remember.

I got my Tele back yesterday with the Don Mare 0038's in it and got to use it on my gig last night. Its a real low volume thing where the drummer uses brushes or those rod things all night. But we still play our regular sets though. But I have to use a Fender Blues Jr with a P12R in it.
The pickups sound great. The only thing I have as a strong reference point are Fenders American Vintage 52 Tele pickups that come in the Muddy Waters Tele. The neck pickup is 7.4k and the bridge is 10.5k.
The main thing I noticed is that they have a real mellow kind of sweet sound. I mean, they still bark and get gnarly, but they have a certain mellow sweetness to them. They still sound like Tele pickups of course. Woody sounding neck, bridge has a little bit of P90 flavor, but still bitchin' like a Tele. The middle position was cool too, I can't describe it very well except that it was more usable than on my Muddy Tele.
I asked my bass player if he noticed a difference (he stands right by my amp all night), and without a hint he said the same thing..."they sound kind of mellow and sweet compared to your other Tele". So there you go.
I'll be able to use it through my better amps on gigs this coming weekend on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. I'm happy with them though. I just wanted a little beefier Tele pickup and that's what I got. This cool mellow sound is a big surprise. Sometimes I feel like I'm fighting with my Muddy Tele to keep good tone coming out all night, but this one was right there with me the whole time.

Fretshop - check your email. I used your Pro all of last night and sent you a detailed report this morning. Of the two modes, the cathode bias mode w/o cathode bypass cap really sounded killer. I still have it's tone/sound in my head today. The fixed bias mode needs some work/tweaking - hopefully we can get it there. Good thing we put that switch in. I thought it might be hard dialing the grease into a new amp ....................
Oh, and congrads on getting back to work. Glad the NJ governor got things sorted out. You've been off work, what 4 or 5 days? Makes me think of the movie Office Space - "well Bob, I wouldn't say I've exactly been MISSING work .............." :)

I was in Portland, OR. last week and the Trail's end Jam Suundays is going w/ Robbie Laws running it.
I did a Kool Gig with this Soul Brother Jimmie Saunders, B3, Bass and Foot pedals, Damn, was He awesome, Ray Beltran blew some good Harp, and Robbie and a few other dudes sat in. it was 100 degrees and felt like I was back in Austin.
The next Night Jim Wallace, Dave Kahl, & Jimi Bott and I did a Gig @ Duff's Garage, Man it was a Hell of a night and Paris Slim, came out and played all night with us, unfortunately the turn out was low.
Jimi Bott is my Man on drums, Best around, I feel. Jim Wallace also is a smokin Player.
Every time we want to move to Portland, we end up stayin in the bay Area, oh well that ain't a bad thing as yesterday, Bob Welch was sick and Freund couldn't do it so I was called to work w/ RJ Mischo, and Kedar, and Hans, also ex JR band member Sax player Baron Shulman ( Bari & Tenor) we smoked a full room at the Beach in Half Moon Bay. 64 degrees outside!
I believe we stayin here!

Don't know if any of you have picked it up, but I got the new Hollywood Blue Flames CD Road to Rio recently on a trip to New Orleans. I'd picked up Sanctuary and really liked that one. The new one is a double disk with one of the new blues flames (with three extra cuts with Jr. Watson on them) and then a whole live disk of the Hollywood Fats Band. Pretty good stuff although I think I like Sanctuary better for the newer stuff than the Road to Rio stuff. I can definitely say that Kirk Fletcher is quickly becoming one of my favorite guitar players (and he's staying VERY busy).

What do ya'll think of the reissue Fender reverb tanks? How about when you upgrade the tubes to the right NOS stuff ? Any good, or still a pale imitation?

NC - I haven't heard that fella you mentioned. I've got a spare 2x10 extension cabinet you might want to try with your 1484 though. Give me a call.
Fret - The 0038's don't seem too much hotter than the pickups in the Muddy Tele. Just fatter, clearer and then there's that mellow sound. I might see what Don can do with rewinding a set of Strat pickups. Maybe get the 'Jr Wind' done.

jimfog: I had one of the reissue tanks and it just was a tone killer. I even had the printed board ripped out and point-to-point wired...not much of an improvement. I splurged on a real '64 tank a few months ago and WOAH what a difference. I love it! Definitely worth it.
Also check out the Uncle Spot (http://www.unclespot.com) tanks. I almost went for one of those. Supposedly they are the closest out there to the real old Fenders.
But I'd stay clear of the reissues. Again, mine just sucked the life out of my tone.

BTG:
My Juke 1210 is a 45 watt version of the Classic--that runs EL34's--that appears to be Gary's favorite tube in this amp--if you talk to him he'll tell you why! The Ultralinear mode kind of mocks the 6L6 sound (in his words), so you get the best of both worlds. But, the Juke will also accept other tubes such as 6L6's and KT66's, however, Gary said that almost everyone that experiments with tubes goes back to the EL34's. The amp is so different from others that you can't really approach it in the same way, regarding what your preconcieved notions about particular tubes sound like.

I did the cap mod < http://home.comcast.net/~rmessick2/Cap%20Mod/Cap%20Mod_Body.htm (http://home.comcast.net/%7Ermessick2/Cap%20Mod/Cap%20Mod_Body.htm) >
and put in NOS tubes including a 6K6. Recently I remounted the tank itself, got rid of the exterior suspension springs and screwed the tank directly to the front board (baffle?) on some foam weather stripping with springs around the screws. That really stopped the stage noise sproinging thing.

Ok, Strat-O , here goes ( i am welcome to be proven wrong here) . It is in G , uses G13 in the 1 chord and C9 and D7#9 for 4 and 5 chords . The bridge is interesting---- try A minor to C7 ( for the climbing Bb sound) to G major (3 times) then G to G7 to A7 then slide back down to the 1 with a Ab9 or something like that . It seems like it might take a rehearsal to get the band through the bridge smoothly. howz dat? fred edited to plot out an idea about the bridge- try this - on the d g b strings respectively-- 7-5-5 Am , 8-7-8 C7 , 9-7-8 G .

AC, Scott
I was in Portland, OR. last week and the Trail's end Jam Suundays is going w/ Robbie Laws running it.
Kenny Blue Ray
Hey Kenny and Scott---
I was wrong---the Trail's End IS still having Jams on Sundays---I just called 'em. ..said they were closed during the 'blues' festival days, and had one jam cancel recently, but all in all it's still going on...
I work with Jim Wallace quite a bit, (he's still holding down that Stein Haus gig on Thursdays...) and am very lucky to play w/ Jimi Bott a fair amount when he's not on the road w/ the T-Birds...my fave drummer, and just a really great person, too.
Scott---sounds like you won't have to drive into P-town after all to get your ya-yas out---have fun!
Strat-O---I'm VERY interested in hearing more 'bout those 0038's---Don's going to do the 'Joel Foy' wind on the USA 52 RI's I sent him---I'm not sure if that is the same as yours, but I'd like to hear more! I'm buying the bridge (double-notched/magnetic) and saddles from Glendale this week...it's slowly coming together...If I REALLY like those tele pups when Don's through, I was thinking of having him rewind the Rolph's in the PeeWee strat to his Watson spec, as well---we'll see...
Mikelaw---c'mon---is that REALLY Pee Wee's relative?? :Devil
I hear my Pee Wee strat that I loaned to a friend for the Curtis Salgado tour has been 'noticed' out there on the road....kinda funny..

jimfog: I had one of the reissue tanks and it just was a tone killer.
Thanks........appreciate your experience. My conundrum is this........no WAY am I gonna go all-out for an original or Uncle Spot......the $300 range is about my limit for a reverb....so, it's either this, or keep the Holy Grail.

Build one of the Weber standalone reverb kits...then over time you can upgrade whatever you want Pot's, Jacks, Trannies, Foil n' oil caps, tubes.....I would think it would have to be better than the stock ri tank...dunno. I think they are around $400 though. I think it would be easy with upgrades to get it in the spot price range if you weren't careful..especially if you don't allready have the tools to build it....or if you want a tech to put it together. The weber would be the cheapest option for a correct point to point fender 6G15 Reverb Circuit.
I have a RI verb tank, and it does a lot better job than any pedal.
I use RCA or Philips 6K6, an Amperex 12ax7 and a Mullard 12at7.
I also like 5751s in the ax7 position. I use it with a Homemade 5F6-A
Bassman PTP Head that just rips, and my 2x12 Weber P12Ns (12A150s)
It breathes fire in certain rooms. (I have a Tweed Pro w/ Weber P15N being made for smaller rooms.)
I like Jason Lollar P90s, and always use Van Zandt (since I sell em) Tele flat pole bridge pups, and True Vintage 5.7K Strat pups.
KBR
I use 4 Hard Tail Strats (Swamp Ash) that all weigh under 6 lbs, one is 5 1/2...

Jimfrog---I understand your dillema---i have gone through some reverbs myself...I have a really nice Clark 'Wateree' that is like the Victoria Reverberato---'verb and trem---the Clark Trem is unreal---still trying to 'dial in' the reverb---he uses a 3-spring, and I'm trying a 2-spring--I just prefer that sound, and I feel like I have a lot more control over the 'verb effect. Plus, I got it 3rd hand, and somewhere along the line somebody took out all the really GOOD tubes and put in cheapie EH 12ax7s....blechhh...I have it at my tech's place now---
I also can't recommend highly enough the Premeir 90 reverb---all over ebay usually, between 160 to 350 in price, mostly---I love mine! And for the WC driving tone a lot of us dig, I almost prefer it over an old Fender!---I KNOW I prefer it over any Fender RI tank I've had---they can be a bit finicky, but a good tech can bring a neglected one off ebay up to speed for usually less than a c-note---I sold one to get my 64' strat, and finally got another one about 2 months ago---KILLER for blues stuff---

KBR---your Tweed Pro you are having built sounds a LOT like my Clark Beaufort!---Usually the Beaufort is basically a tweed Deluxe w/ a 12"---I had him put it in a Pro size Cab w/ a Weber p15n-t (enhanced treble---I found most alnico Webers a little 'dark' for my taste)---I have since put in a 61' Jensen p15n--NOW we're talkin'!
I LOVE this amp...will take 2-6L6's w/a 5ar4 rec, or 2-6V6's w/a 5y3---no rebias needed---2 volumes, 1 tone---Premier verb in front---way too good for me!
Enjoy your Pro RePro Kenny---

You can call David Wilson at TQR 1-877-629-8663 and tell him that I told you to call. David can steer you to some of the best techs for this type of work.
From my directory, here are some references:
Our Studio tech, and one of the best custom amp builders in the business, Lou Rosano (Duke Robillard, Danny Gatton, Keith Richard, Joh Fogerty...etc etc....) does a point to point conversion on RI tanks with a new board, tube sockets...the whole Lebowski...They sound great. www.louisamps.com (http://www.louisamps.com) 201-384-6466
Jeff Gehring:
Jetlag will tell ya, this guy can do it !! Ya gotta get the contact data from Jetlag. Jeff built my custom Pro amp.
Jeff Bakos : Bakos Amp Works on Ponce De Leon Avenue, Atlanta. 404-607-8426 One of the best in the country, IMHO.
Now...here's the rub. most of these conversions are more than $300.

Anyone else have Johnny Moeller's "Johnny's Blues Aggregation"? I picked it up recently and there are some killer songs on there. same difference...HA! That's a good'un---:roll
Jankety---what is it you would like to know? I've lived here in Portland 16 years, and the 'scene' is as dry and pathetic as I have ever seen it right now...but, we have quite a few excellent musicians---here's a few of my faves--
Drums: Jimi Bott---the best. period. I'm lucky to play with him occasionally. He makes me a better musician when I do. Luckily, a few other good drummers that know when to keep it simple--Jon Beyer, Dave Melyan, and the great Jeff Strawbridge (killer pocket and attitude...)
Bass: No one special, at least as far as classic Chigago/West Coast blues goes... A few real fine players that are fine to play with, but no Ronnie James Weber's, that's for sure...I pick Dave Kahl as a favorite, along with Marco Savo, when he's not blazing swingin' blues on his ES-150 Charlie Christian---Marco is jaw-dropping--and has a bit of Chris Cain in him, as well....
Harp: above mentioned Paul DeLay, world reknown Curtis Salgado---both these guys are also killer singers---Curtis is more R&B funk these days, but when he lays down the blues...no-one better. Also Jim Wallace---our staunch Electric Harp traditionalist, a VERY respected player, and my best friend in P-town. On the acoustic side, Stu Kinzel(g) and Lynn Ann Hyde(h) play a variety of roots Americana (blues, old country, gospel) very well---also have a 4-piece electric band---Stu and I have worked and lived together years ago, and he is an awesome player with great slide and fingerpicking chops---just great
Keyboards:---hmmmm...a couple organ guys that are great...Dover Weinberg, Louis Pain, Ben Partain---I'd LOVE to play with these type of cats more, but I've been stuck w/4 piece harp bands as of late...ho-hum:p
Couple of well known 'transplants'---Paris Slim, Rick Welter (g) come to mind---and they are struggling like the rest of us---no one is paying the rent w/o a) going on the road b) rich wife/girlfriend c) trust fund d) day job---I'm in the 'd' category---work graveyards...
Other local heros have to include:
Lloyd Jones---solo OR band, just funky and greasy--I love Lloyd's bag...
Robbie Laws....our strat king---although he can play MANY styles and is ALWAYS studying music---can knock you out!! no lie!
Mark Lemhouse---really like his solo stuff (national/acoustic)
Hillstomp---north mississippi hill blues---KILLER and hypnotic
Rollie Tussing III---a one man band---great stuff...
Terry Robb---can play blistering acoustic blues in his sleep...really great-
---sorry---I'm leaving out the vocalist-that-don't-play-an-instrument fronted bands---I rarely go see that stuff
Lots and lots of mediocre bands that seem to get plenty of gigs and local print hype too---must charge 100.00 or pay to play or something---some fantastic bands that rarely work.
The Strangetones are a must see, as is the first set at Duff's Garage on Wednesdays---Suburban Slim and Marco Savo---my favorite electric players in the northwest---including Seattle:p
Kenny Blue Ray keeps threatening to move up here and make it even harder on so-so guitarists like me...:D
BTW---Marco Savo, Suburban Slim, Paul DeLay, Jim Wallace, Dave Kahl (bass) and myself (that freaks me out!!) will be on the new Jimi Bott CD coming out soon---all LIVE cuts!! ---please buy copies for your moms!
Sorry---no 'famous' stars like Junior, Rick, Alex or Rod---but some decent musicianship---or Jimi would not be putting it out!
**If I forgot anybody I like, I'm truly sorry---If I offended anyone I could care less about or if they are diluting the quality of live music in Portland, then Screw ya****:Spank

Sounds like the man is borderline genious. I noticed there are a few Marco soundclips over at Dave Stephens' website - one tune is a jump number with harmony head lines you might want to check out. I have 3 Premiers and none are dead quiet, finding a good 6EU7 is a good beginning,a grounded cord, and re-caphelps too. To me,the nice tone boost and deep reverb of a Premier is worth getting the bugs out.

hey Ryan,
Must be defective fuses!! ok, kidding aside... I would check the tubes first. Swap 'em all out (replace them) and power up again... if your fuse is ok, then put them back in one-by-one and power cycle each time to find the guilty one. After that I would most likely suspect a shorted filter cap if they haven't been replaced already. Good luck!

Silvertones were, and still are notorious for filter cap, tube socket (dirt and corrosion), and solder joint issues. When I replace the caps on those amps, I also suck out and replace all the solder joints on the board, and then re-condition the solder joints on the chassis/ground leads. I don't think I'd mess too much with the filter cap values either. The gray import ones work fine.

Another great one gone.
All,
It is with great sadness in my heart that I tell you that my good friend and
mentor Sam Myers has passed away at the age of 70. In the past year Sam has
fought a battle with throat cancer, and had just finally been able to go home a
week ago. He was looking healthier than he had been in years, and he was very
happy to be able to go home. It really seemed like he was on the mend and the
doctors said he probably had another 15-20 years in him. That was not to be.
This morning he began choking and after 30 minutes of working on Sam, the
paramedics we're not able to resuscitate him. Please send out prayers to Sam's
family and extended family members. I know there are many here who loved Sam for
the man he was, and for his great contributions to blues music. He really
affected me as a human being, and as a musician. I will post details of the
funeral
when they become available.
I love you Sammy,
GODSPEED,
HB
Very sad news I wish I could have seen him.

RIP---I met him only once, helped him smoke, helped him with eating a burger---he was so generous with stories and spirit...one of the last 'real deal's'----another one gone---sad for the loss, happy for the memories.

Sam had been fitted for a prosthesis in his throat which allowed him to speak alot more lucidly than the "buzzer" that most throat cancer patients have had to rely on. Although I asked about the device as the possible culprit, or perhaps food lodged in the area, I couldn't get an answer. I'll post more when Anson calls me back.
For the three decades plus that I knew Sam, he was a friend, a mentor and at times a task master, and could be an exacting disciplinarian. He also acted as a respected counsel and arbitrator to both his peers, and those of us "coming Up". I can remember that during a time when Otis Rush and I were deeply embroiled in differences, Sam very casually mentioned that he'd heard that I was in "deep s..t" and carefully mapped out a strategy that led to a resolution and the salvaging of a long time friendship. NOTHING got past Sam Myers. NOBODY messed with him either. I'm looking into flights, and will keep y'all posted.

That Anson at the Grand Emporium record was the album that really launched me full-on into playing blues. Saw Sam many times and he was always fantastic. One of the true greats. RIP Sammy....

Yeah, RIP Sam. Crotchty but great vocals and harp. Had him here in Gainesville with Anson about 2 years ago. Elevated stage with NO steps up to it. Had to help Sam onto the stage via a chair. He was NOT happy. Still put on a great show. Loved the fact that there were lots of younger women there.

One of the first records I ever bought was that fantastic compilation on Island, 'This Is Blues'. Homesick James, JB Lenoir, Elmore James, Buster Brown, Sonny Boy Williamson, Willie Mae Thornton, Freddy King, Lowell Fulsom, Lightnin' Hopkins, Frankie Lee Sims, Otis Rush, Junior Wells, Tarheel Slim and Sammy. Real good stuff. Sammy sang 'Sleeping In The Ground'.
A lot later I saw him with Anson, getting guided to the mic, singing, reaching for his smokes and lighting up during every guitar solo, and playing the best harp without any apparent affort.
RIP Sammy, you did great things and lasted a long time.

I saw him perform just once with Anson at the Dallas Guitar Show a couple years back. He was an unforgettable entertainer and fine blues man.
Rest well, Sam.

Ah man ... that sucks ...
I remember buying "Sins" on vinyl many, many years ago and was just blown away. His singing and harp playing was amazing and his shuffle groove on the instrumental "Chill Out" just killed me. Still one of my favourite albums.
Everything Sam did was funky, soulful and deeeep.

I am sad today. Sammy was querky but underneath he was sweet Sam. My bass player Bill was one of his best buddies. If Sam was in a crowded room talking to fans and he heard Bill's voice. He would stop everything to talk to Bill. At first he was hard to get to know but if he knew you really liked the old school he could talk for hours. I knew he finally liked me when I became the "M F" couselor. I knew I was in w him then.
There are so many great Sam stories
At least I got to record w him 4 songd we never finished our cd but probably will sometime.
God Bless SAM

NC: If you go to Dallas let me know. I'm working with Delta trying to arrange a bereavement fare. Hey...Remember the show in Brevard two years ago ? Sam started improvising lyrics during the final set with you on the H-65 and me on lap steel...and the verses worked...they were perfect. He introduced me as the "skinny guy with the nose and no ass".
That was right around the time he started to get sick....bad days, here and there, the "spells" eventually increasing in frequency. He was in decent spirits throughout the winter, but looked tired. He remarked to us that he was weary and wanted to visit Mississippi again. I believe the episode I am about to describe happened a few weeks before the Brevard show (Thanks Carol, for correcting the time line). I had finished refurbishing Anson's ES-5 and '57 Strat and drove the instruments up to New Hampshire. The Rockets were performing at an enormous VFW hall in the White Mountains (?) of New Hampshire near Mt. Washington. Folks came from everywhere...the joint was packed, and the ladies had cooked up all kinds of food for the patrons and us. Carol cut up two portions of Yankee pot roast for Sam, then gave him his meds. The set started about a half hour later, and during the first song, Sam collapsed. A nurse from the local hospital was in the audience and checked Sam out. She told ME to get him to the hospital right away, because there was only one ambulance in the district and it was out already. The band made it through the night without the leader, everyone taking a place at the vocal mic. About 1:30AM, Anson arrived at the hospital and we stayed with the old man all night. By morning, he was feisty, and cursing at both of us. Although Sam wanted to go on, the remainder of the tour was cancelled, and the band immediately left for Dallas. That was the beginning.

We played 'Looking Back' at Blind Willie's last night and dedicated it to Sam. If any of you have heard many Sam stories, you'll know why we dedicated that one to him.
His harp playing did seem effortless didn't it? That always amazed me. NC Slim's bass player (Bill) and his wife have countless stories about Sam. They should write a book! I know Fretshop has a ton of stories as well.

Strat-O: I think Bill and his wife joined us in Savannah at The Blind Pig for a gig about 3-4 years ago. I went out to fill Sam's presecription, then pick up his cigarettes and a battery for something or other, and the convenience store down the street from the club had just closed. I'm standing at the door in a Hawaiian shirt, jeans and boots, and I started knocking on the door. The old woman that owned the place came up to the door, opened it, and stuck an enormous pistol in my face. The police arrived, and started questioning me. Wes Starr ran across the street and told them that I was playing at the club and just needed a battery. The cop almost pissed himself laughing, and I about s..t myself from the gun being in my face. The cop stopped by the club with his wife later, and we all had a good laugh. Sam was angry because I never got his cigarettes...He annouced over the P.A. system: "Any body got a Chesterfield...no filter ? I need a cigarette. This is what happens when you send a boy to do a man's job !!"

I just received the Teddy Bunn: 1929-1940 CD that was talked about on here a few weeks ago after Junior suggested some of his stuff to jetlag.
It's a cool set of music, but as you could expect by the timeline, there isn't a ton of jumpin' guitar on this set. There's a few unamplified archtop leads on the tunes from the 30's sessions, and then about five tracks of solo country blues grt/vox stuff. Cool to own, but I would imagine that Junior must have been referring to some of his later stuff being that there's not a lot of guitar on here.
dukeh62
07-18-2006, 12:07 PM
Yeah, that's not the stuff Junior is talking about. You need to get the Selctive sides from the 40's with Bunn playing electric guitar. The electric guitar stuff is where it's at. There is a cd called "More Ugly Guitar - The Kings Of Distortion" that has about 6 of these songs on it. All killer stuff. I think I've mentioned this cd a number of times before in this tread. Has Chuck Norris, Bill Jennings, Goree Carter, etc on on it too.
I need to start paying attention! Thanks Frank!

I have a POS Tele copy that I bought at a pawn shop a million years ago. I'm thinking of putting a little money into it to make it a smaller POS. A maple neck and new electronics mainly.
My question is what do you guys recommend for Tele pots? 500k or 250k and what else as far as caps etc? I've seen a lot of pre-fab things on Ebay and elsewhere but the parts seem kind of suspect. Very few say what brand the electronics are and fewer still say "Genuine Fender Parts" not that that's any great shakes.

Hey everyone...
Just thought I would say hey... Most of the time I am a "lurker" but I thought I would pass along that my first (hopefully not last!) European tour begins next week... It really is a dream come true for me. My fellowship ends on Tuesday and the next day I am off to Sweden for a week and a half and then to Holland for two weeks. I will be backed by TRICKBAG in Sweden (killer band with a really good harp player) and by THE BACKBONES in Holland. They have backed Mike Welch before and from what I can tell, he had good things to say about them. They have offered to provide amps and solicited my preferences. I will keep my fingers crossed that they come through with at least something old with tubes and preferably four ten inch speakers! I am comfortable playing all night through the PA but it sure is nice to have the grittiness and growl of an old tube amp and bullet mic...
By the way, I am still smiling from ear to ear from my trip to Kansas City. To be able to reunite and play with my dear friend Jetlag was a blast. Oh yeah, and I was just thrilled to have the opportunity to share the stage for a few songs with Junior Watson. He seemed to dig the stuff I called - it is a little different than Lee McBee's material - more swing and jump. Junior played some great stuff on a fast chromatic jump in Bb... I should mention that Jetlag held his own all night long and solidified my long held belief that he can play with anyone anywhere... Talking to musicians in the crowd that night I know I am not alone in my opinion... Kudos Karl...
If anyone is going to be in Sweden or Holland over the next month let me know and I can shoot you my whereabouts... I will update you on my experiences when I return...
250 K CTS pots are best w/ a sprague orange drop .05 or .047 cap.

I use a variety of different control and capacitor configurations, some of them stock, and some a bit more exotic depending on the wood and the pickups you're using.
My personal faves are: .039MF 5% tolerance ceramic or mylar caps and OEM Fender pots, which I test and match for value on a mil. spec Fluke VOM. The .039 will get you closer to the tone of a very old paper and oil or ceramic Fender cap. Fender "CTS" (yeah, right !!) potentiometers can vary as much as 25% or more. My last several batches metered out from about 190K ohms to over 300K ohms. Those values all capture different fequencies from the pickups, so you can custom design your harness to taste. I like the Fender OEMs because they use a very high quality Cermet conuctor (vs. carbon) which lasts a long time, and their "sweep" "taper" or what we call ROTATION is pretty accurate, although a little bit more touchy than the 50's and 60's pots that we use for test purposes (not for sale).
If you wish, you can e-mail me with some info about the body and the pickups, and I'll get back to you. BTW: The "Fat" Tele necks that everyone here has been talking about are "O.K." most of the time (I'm NOT talking about the USA Custom fat necks, which are fabulous) but a few of the import "Fat" necks that we've ordered for clients, including the pre-finished necks have exhibited truss rod issues...just thought I'd pass that on. You get what you pay for.

Sam Myers update via Hash Brown & Dennis Oellig e-mail: I only pasted the particulars to save space. If any one wants a copy of the entire message, e-mail me.
There will be services for Sam Myers in Dallas, TX; where he has resided for the past twenty years. The services will be held at the Sandra Clark Funeral Home (6029 south R. L. Thornton freeway ph- 214-371-2600). There will be a visitation on Thursday evening, July 20th from 6pm until 9pm, and the funeral service will be on Friday, July 21st at 11am.
Sam will be buried in Mississippi where his Mom and Dad are buried (they both passed in the last year). The details for the Mississippi funeral and burial will be forthcoming. There will be a service somewhere in Jackson, Mississippi, and then a graveside service which will probably take place next Monday. I will get these details out as soon as they become known.
Please everyone; pass this information on to others. Sam was born in Laurel, Mississippi on February 19th, 1936. He left this world on July 17th, 2006 at

On the tele tone pot thing, I'm really diggin' the 250K Fender branded no-load pot I put in mine. Sorta like Spinal Tap - mine goes to "11." Seriously, I find the added brightness and slight "oomph" you get in the no load detente postition useful when on the front pickup. It makes that pickup a hair louder and definitely more bright. Nice at times if your front pu has the metal cover. You can buy them from Allparts or Acme Guitar Works. I had a .1uf cap in mine but put a .047 or .05uf cap in it - the rolloff works better now. Had I known Frets advice I probably would have tried that .039uf. I have a Mallory Series 150 poly cap in mine just because it's really small and fits - the yellow mallorys are pretty common. Bet allparts has them. If I had more room, I'd probably try one of the old, leaky yellow astrons that i've pulled out of my tweed amps. Bet they sound great in a guitar.
Kurt, I'm happy for you. Enjoy Europe and be safe. Hope the bands and the backline are good. Looking forward to hearing about it upon your return.

Well, I was about to say that I don't know what kind of pots and caps or whatever is in this Tele I just put together. But it sounds great. I thought the comment sounded a little pushy though.
So, I checked out this Victoria Regal down here at Midtown Music. Listen to this: This one is a dual 6L6 model, which is a change from the original Regal which was a single ended 6L6. It has a special Weber 15 in it that Mark developed with Ted Weber. So I call up to Mark (Baier) to ask a few questions about the amp that I was curious about. And the lowdown is that this is a brand new design of the Regal that allows you to use either two or one 6L6. Or two or one 6V6's. Or one 6V6 and one 6L6. Can you believe it? Its mind boggling to me. No biasing etc. Thing sounds great. Apparently the Tonequest fella got this one from Victoria and has been checking it out for review. Cool little vintage sounding amp that was based on the Valco amps in the 50's. Oh, and its a TV Front cabinet too.

I spent some time with this Regal amp and some different tubes. Its sounds great but not as good as the Victorilux (to me anyway). The 'character' of the Regal is dead on that late 60's to 70's BB King sound...or that tone Mike Bloomfield got with the gold top Les Paul. A real sweet, round, singing kind of tone. Its pretty cool, but not exactly what I like. I've gotten used to 2x10 and 3x10 amps all the time and the 15 was a little too beamy for me.
Its cool though. I think it'd make a great amp for a slide guitar player too.

Mike- youda mane- no dissin' received on my frequency, bro!
Strat-O- great point about appreciation vs. competition; When you hear quotes from the originals like Earl Hooker, Hubert, Muddy, T-Bone et al, they were all about having "their sound", even if it meant being different for the sake of being different....and that's where all the great styles we worship today come from!! The best compliment anyone can get is when someone says " hey man, you're sounding more like YOU everyday" . I had a harp player buddy who hasn't seen me in awhile say something to that effect the other night - basically saying he could hear my influences, but felt I was doing my own thing, too, which was huge, cause I as having a CLUNKER of a night, IMHO.

Check this out. A new blues and Jazz cafe opened up around the corner from my crummy, cramped little apartment in South Amboy :
www.bluemoonhome.com (http://www.bluemoonhome.com)
For over thirty years it was the Broadway Central Cafe, a quaint and quirky dive frequented by film and entertainment personalities. Wayne sold the joint to a nice couple, Walter and Adrienne who gutted the 130 year old structure and restored it from the ground up. Great food, reasonable prices, and lots of hot babes. (Well....I guess...when you're my age, any babe that'll pay attention to you is hot.) Make sure you click on "News" and "Check these out". One of the Blue Moon regulars is John Hawken, a British transplant, and a phenomenal pianist who got his start hittin' the ivories with The Nashville Teens in 1965. Their rendition of Tobacco Road remained on the international charts for almost two years. John later Joined The Strawbs, and I believe he also did a stint with Renaissance. He plays at the Blue Moon about twice a month. Awesome Barrelhouse technique, and Chicago piano stylings ala Otis Spann.

I can't say this enough....what a great show and what a great artist and songwriter Dave is.

da is the best. i like pa too! IMHO, the blasters stuff is some of the best music ever. its the kind that when youre making your top 25 artists ever list, you get to 25 and fill in some artist then you think of the blasters and how they have to be TOP 10 and it just messes up your whole list.

Yeah I suppose it all does tie in and come together....doesn't it? Gene Taylor was in the Blasters....Hollywood Fats was Dave's replacement in the Blasters for awhile. Dave playing with all those early blues men like Big Joe Turner. Man the bass player looked familiar too. I tried to catch the names but couldn't hear over the crowd cheering so loud. I did catch he was from Hollywood. I didn't hang around after the show to find out because I still had a long drive home. What names I did remember escaped my mind overnight. If anyone knows the names of the whole lineup I'd be glad to know who all is out with him now. I kept thinking there should be a law that all band's should be this good. I've been looking around his website today....lots of interesting stuff.

fyi....my pal carl has a 3-10 tweed victoria bandmaster for sale. 16 bills. email him at ctrblues@aol.com . fyi- I remember when he got it a few years back and we verified that Sean Costello was the previous owner. Sean used it when he was touring and playing with Susan Tedeschi way back.

Boy, I'm tempted to buy that thing back Mike. Carl got it from me. That 3x10, 35 watt thing is alot of amp though. That was why I reluctantly got rid of it. Elvis stamp and all.
But it was a great sounding amp...somebody will be happy with it!

Some nice amps for sale there guys - just wish I was in a position to deal!
Check out Ian Siegal on this clip:

He plays the good stuff, Muddy-style Chicago, footstomping Son House delta blues too, acoustic guitar with the Lightnin' Hopkins pickup, sounds like Howlin' Wolf sometimes, plays the local blues bar & runs the Monday jam. And cares nothing for his liver...
Here's that keyboard player in his regular gig, plays left hand bass, some of you guys might like this one - cool 8 bars on the tonic in the last verse of the solo. Skilback you probably remember Matt Schofield:

Anybody else do a tribute to Sam Myers this past weekend? We did "Ways of Man" on friday night that was a lot of fun. Played a new club up here that had one of the best crowds we've played to in a long time. Unfortunately, only one guy in the joint knew who Sam Myers was.
I just ordered Anson's "Sins" record this morning. I've heard it's fantastic.

Have any of you guys played one the newly designed Lentz (http://www.lentzguitar.com) guitars? I'm usually a super-traditionalist when it comes to guitars, but I keep on looking at these things and I think they are WAY cool. They don't have many of the colors up yet, but if you search their forum and TGP you can see some great paint jobs on them. Redd Volkaert is currently playing one.

That one & 'Live at the Grand Emporium' are my two faves by Anson & Sam- I wish I'd known you didn't have 'Sins'- I have an extra copy I could've given ya!
I'm looking forward to playing that new room (Fat Boy Bill's)in a couple of weeks - also looking forward to playing w/you on the 3rd!

Sins is a great disc. You'll love it. I listened to it and Grand Emporium last week too. Great music. We did "Lookin' Back" and dedicated it to Sam last Monday, the day that he passed. It was obviously a reference to his shall we say, discriminating eyesight problem. There were a couple of folks who seemed to know who Sam Myers was. Anson and Sam played this club regularly.

You know what just occurred to me, (without trying to cite the obvious) ? Even though this is the 'West Coast Blues Appreciation Thread', we're all just as appreciative of Anson, who's clearly a Louisiana/Texas by way of Chicago styled cat, not so much in the jump blues vein at all; My point being, I think what draws us to all the players we love are the elements of taste, tone and maintaining elements of the 'tradition', while still having an individual voice- I think our West Coast faves are indicative of that, but many others, like Anson, bring SO much to the table but in a totally different bag. Thanks for letting me type/think out loud. ( I was bass fishing in the sun all day- could be the early signs of heat stroke!) ;)

as I sneakily jump on Backalleys thread twist, I must put in a plug for a cd I have been enjoying recently. It is " Keys to the Crescent City" - Rounder 2087 ,with Eddie Bo, Willie Tee, Charles Brown and Art Neville. It has the original version of " 6 strings down" by Art and some really nice Meters-style synth stuff by His Funkiness. The highlight for me is Charles Brown " Nobody Knows But Jesus" - awesome jazz chords combined with a St. James type progression, I am blown away by his singing and playing after hearing so much of his earlier loungey-blues stuff. Sometimes I get a little burned out on straight guitar music and this all keyboard cd is good medicine.
I just found an Ampeg Jet amp - 2 6v6's with trem, 1x12. It sounds pretty nice, maybe not enough to gig with but we'll see. fred

dddelta - How was the T-Birds gig? I might see them again in few weeks.
Duke - There's a good player named Buddy Whittington from Texas (I think) who likes the new Lentz guitars and I saw him play one with John Mayall a while back...really nice traditional tones. Lentz used to be into the Strat/Tele copy bag until Fender came down on him... I think you can find the the whole story and lots of threads here on the GP. Anyway, so now he has his own headstock and body designs - I dig the one he does now with the P90 in the neck and tele bridge setup but I've never played one.
I like Sins & Grand Emporium too, two of their best IMHO.
Backalley - Exactly! More epiphany than heatstroke!! :D I find that criteria (taste, tone, respect for tradition, and individual voice) really defines what I look for in any kind of music, including the different genres of blues. It's just natural selection too not according to any checklist. It's why I would rather listen to Junior Watson instead of Gary Moore (taste?), or Anson instead of KWS (individual voice?)... (not that these artists are comparable anyway but you know what I'm sayin').

Scott makes one of the finest Fender-style guitars going.
I used to own one of his 50s-style Teles, and it was killer...!Unfortunately, I had to part with it (along with a bunch of other gear) last year when I was out of work for an extended period. Extremely resonant body woods, GREAT necks and fretwork, and pickups that just won't quit! The older Fender "replica" guitars like the one I owned are bringing in the $4500-5000 range now. Supply and demand, you know...? ;)
If I had the cash, I'd be all over one of the new ones, which are much more affordable, but every bit as good, IMO...

I'm a huge Anson fan these days...been digging him more and more for about the last 6 months, for some reason. I did get to see him with Sam quite a few years ago, I treasure the memory. RIP, Sam, such a loss.
One of my all time faves is Live at The GE, really only have a couple more records by him, looks like I'll have to order Sins. I've been getting deeply into Anson & Peewee Crayton lately. Enough so that I went out and bought a strat to get some of those tones. Ended up with a black 50's Closet Classic. Love it. It's replaced my R4 as my #1 these days.
Now I'm actually considering letting go of an amp to get a BFSR, or maybe a maz 38, probably the Fender. I have a couple of small BF amps, could use something to get that tone on the bigger outdoor gigs & such. Might even finally let my AC15TBX go, or the Vicky Pro, for the right Super. I got it bad, digging the BF thing, I know...not so West Coast, but it's not the stick as much as how you shake it!
Cheers,
ML

Well its all blues you know, and Anson and Co. swing like a mad men. That performance at the Grand Emporium is nothing short of completely inspiring.
I don't know man, that Robert Johnson guitar looks pretty sketchy to me. They don't seem to have any conclusive proof, unless I missed something.

Yeah, even from its inception I always really thought of this thread as being "West Coast" in name only...even so, branding the stuff from Ramos, Watson, Harman, etc. as West Coast really only serves to describe where those guys are usually located geographically. They all draw on such a wide range of influences from so many different eras. Jimmie Vaughan - not West Coast at all, but I don't think anyone who participated in this thread doesn't dig his stuff.

C'mon Strat-O, where's your sense of adventure? It's only $6,000,000 starting price!
I thought the proof was way sketchy too. They'd need a letter signed by Johnson & countersigned by the devil himself to warrant that kind of money.
On the west coast thing, I figure everybody here digs pretty much the same sort of things so what the heck...

Well, when I pirated this thread over from that piece of crap "other" board, I was wondering whether or not to keep the "west coast" moniker. I only kept it b/c I knew it would draw in more of the traditional hip blues guys...ALL OF YOU!
So yes, it really should be called the "Guys that like tasty, traditional blues thread."
Live at the grand emporium is one of my favs too.Definetely inspiring. I've been listening to thats the way it is lately. Anson does some great playing on a slow blues on that. If that was really robert johnson's guitar wouldn't it be in a museum ?

Scott Lentz makes a fine guitar--I have a Strat that he made for me when he was doing those. Since he's local to me, I've had an opportunity to play quite a few, including the new ones. Pictures don't tell the whole story, but playing one does!
I was listening to Sirrius on my Sat. TV, and from the other room I heard "Hucklebuck" by Canned Heat, with Jr. Watson on guitar. This prompted me to dig out my old LP of "Reheated". That song alone is worth the price of admission IMO.
Now I'm on a mission to find some other stuff that Jr. did wit
