Kenny I can see why you'd be pleased with that tone you got there - really nice, sweet bridge p/u sounds. Matt Schofield sounds like that a bit when he plays his Albert Collins bag with his Tele and Super Rvb. Steve Edmondson sounds good too. Nice playing all round.
Thanks, for comments, (good or bad) I am a geezer, and play slow with Tone, I never could play fast, and it ain't my personality. Hell, someone has to play slow/ & or Medium.

Swingblues.....I would think it would be easy to teach having the guitar "flipped" lefty....easier than a "righty" teacher even. If the person is sitting straight across from you and watching your fretboard. He/she would see your fretboard exactly like they do looking down at their own guitar. I always found it increadibly easy to steal licks from a lefty because of this. If a student watches my fretboard it is backwards for them. They often want to look over the neck down at the board. Heck you can even flip their guitar if you need to play it, for tuning or setup issues. If there is good money in it I'd give it a go! Music is music....shouldn't be a problem. Choose your students wisely and get paid montly in advance or it will suck the fun right out of it! ;-)

I once had a lefty teacher who was a phenom jazz player--his guitar wasn't "flipped", just a standard lefty. It was like looking in a mirror, which was cool. Then one day he asked to check out my guitar, and proceeded to play the same stuff right handed!! He told me that he's a natural lefty, but when he started out, he only had a right handed guitar to play, so that's how he learned. When he got older, wiser, and wealthier, he was able to seek out left handed instruments, including the L5 he had. Not fair folks can be so good! Go for it Igor! Music's in the soul!

Took the tremolo plunge today. Picked up a TC Electronics Vintage Tremolo. When I got back from the shop and googled it I realised I had got it close to half price and that they have now discontinued the model.
The reason it is discontinued is because it was made for TC Electronics by T Rex and someone let the cat out of the bag (the T Rex is $60 more in England and is identical save for the box).
Anyway, I'll be gigging it twice over the weekend and will post my thoughts next week. I have a good feeling about this one...
Cheers,

Hey All - I finally got myself a copy of Junior Watson's "Long Overdue"...great stuff. I checked his website and it doesn't look like it's actively maintained. Does anyone know where I can go to get the latest news on his gigging schedule and if and when he'll come out with another CD?
Thanks!

For anyone who's wondering, Jim Fogarty's still alive. Had surgery mid-yesterday and seems to be doing OK.
I have mixed feelings about this because he'd promised me his partscaster strat and SFDR if, you know...
So, uh, Fog's still with us. Whoopee.

Everything went as well as could be expected. I'm hurting more today than yesterday, but suspect the anesthesia wore off overnight. I was trying to avoid them, but Percosets are my FRIEND today.
I attempt my 1st gig in @ 2 weeks. Can't wait! I even tried to fire up an amp today and play, but I'm so foggy, it was all sounding a bit "Big Brother and the Holding Company"-ish to me.

I was able to catch a show last night here in Seattle at the Triple Door - great venue... sort of an upscale supper club. Big stage, nice acoustics and assigned seating only... the shows start early (7:30) and end early (9:30)... IT is a little pricey for a show but at least people are there to listen to the music...
The Insomniacs (out of Portland, OR) opened the show... Very impressive group of young musicians... I particularly liked the guitar/player singer - great tone and chops... plus he has a real nice voice for the material he sang... my only criticism of their opening set was that they played with very little dynamics - mostly "pedal to the metal"... Also, there music (IMHO) seemed to be screaming out for upright bass... these are minor quibbles though... great set...
Junior and John Nemeth brought the house down... John may be one of only a few guys out there that could convincingly cover Junior Wells and Sinatra - able to capture both their vocal inflections and phrasing. His nuanced harmonica (heavy junior vibrato) and singing on Come ON in This House (I think that was the song - slow blues) was downright eerie...
Gear report: Wish I could supply details about junior's rig but I could not get a good look at his amp - looked like a Bassman or RI Bassman... Talked to John before the show and he was raving about his new boutique harmonica amp - Harpgear 20 Watts and two 8-inch speakers... Although it sounded really good being miced through the PA - it still sounded like a small amp to me - lacking that big bottom end and drive that more watts and 4 tens can produce.. his harp seemed to be swallowed up in the mix... I would be curious to hear some of the other Harpgear amps with more wattage and speakers...
all in all a great night of blues...

If the FOH guy had a clue about amplified harp you should not have noticed the size of the amp. I can't tell you how many times I've heard a sound tech say 'The harmonica has an amp?' I've heard that comment on some big Blues festival stages.
Glad to hear it was a good show. That kid in the Insomniacs is pretty dang good isn't he!

Hi All!
I'm new to the thread and over the past few weeks I have been busy reading through the wealth of info you guys have put together here - what an Alladdin's cave - and some real heavy-hitters contributing!!
I've got a couple of questions to kick off:
As a Brit guitarist coming to the blues (and now headin "out West"!!) via EC, Peter Green and then the Chicago & Texas players, I find myself lacking in the hipper, jazz-inflected WC department. Can anyone give me any tips on sites, books, tabs etc to get me on the good foot?
On a more specific note: are there any tabs/books for guitarists wanting to learn that Robert Jnr Little Walter accompaniment stuff? I've always wanted to get Fast Boogie down for starters!!
Finally, I was reading posts from a few months back mentioning a Kim Wilson CD "Kim's Mix" with outakes from the My Blues sessions. I can't find this anywhere - any ideas??
Thanks to everyone for a great forum and resource!!
PS. Forgot the crucial gear question!! For any Brits on the thread, could you recommend an amp tech in SE England? My beloved '68 SF Deluxe Reverb needs some attention and the last tech I used...well, let's say I won't be going back!!

Welcome 63tbird!
I discovered this thread some month ago and like you I have been very busy reading through the great stuff.
It was me who mentioned the "Kim's mix" cd. It is a non-commercial, home burned cd of Kims that I bought at a T-birds concert. If you don't have Kims "real" cd's you should just go and by them, they are the shizzle. If you want the "kims mix" I think your best bet is to go to a concert with the T-birds. You could also try to email the t-birds/Kim or contact him via myspace.com. If you cant get the cd this way, I could burn it for you however, I would only do that if it is the ONLY way for you to get it.
As for tabs I dont really use that, so I cant guide you to anything like that.
Greetings from Copenhagen,
Andreas

Fart Tone...........an appreciation.
So, for my 1st foray out into the world, I went to see my band...........pretty sad, huh? Actually it was fun to watch Melissa, Jeff and crew, sans ME..........rarely get a chance to see your own band without you.
They sounded great, of course (well...there were one or two wigglies...lol)......and Greg Snyder, who filled in for me, was stellar. He's more of a jazz/Benson type player and he nailed the tunes while bringing something unique to the table.......nice. I definitely will be stealing some shit.
What I found interesting was the tone thing. He mostly played pretty jazz clean....with a Les Paul Studio through a Twin Reverb.......occasionally adding a TS to make it "bluezzy".....if you know what I mean. I preferred the clean stuff.
BUT....he also had this old Tube Driver pedal. I was asking him about it, and he didn't really dig it......too much drive, kinda nasty, etc. He switched it on to show me how crappy it was......and BAM, there it was.....
FART TONE, in all it's flatulent glory!
I told him to roll the tone off on his Lester and leave the "crappy" pedal ON, just to to try.............and damned if the whole thing didn't come to life....his playing sounded more edgy and dangerous, the band was kickin a bit more, Melissa was boppin...............hell, even the kids sitting next to me leaned over and asked if that's what I suggested he do, cause it ROCKED dude!!!
(Everyone who's anyone loves FART TONE!!!!)
Well.....I could tell Greg didn't dig it much and felt uncomfortable, so he switched it off (kids went "awwwwww")...........but those couple tunes were a revelation to me.
Tone really DOES matter.........and not just to us guitar geeks.
All hail FART TONE!

By Fart Tone I'm thinking you mean the creamy, spongy, grungy overdrive you get from a tweed Fender working hard(not necessarily maxed out). I like it too. Add a good dose of Fender reverb, and there you go. Hmm, it could also describe the sound of low notes coming out of a blackface Fender amp working hard.

Pee Wee Crayton, Tiny Grimes, Johnny Guitar Watson, Lowell Fulson, Johnny Heartsman...
Actually, before I saw Lefty's list I was just about to post on a slightly different tack as follows:
Don’t know if this comes as strictly West Coast-approved but I thought you guys might enjoy a bit of the following:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AW7lT7Ympc
Mr Danny Adler!!! (Not to be confused with Dan Adler the jazz player) He's not a virtuoso in the JW/Holmstom vein, but what he does do is cook up something totally unique from the usual blues ingredients and, because of that, I guarantee there's not a soul reading this thread who couldn't cop an idea or two from him! That chord-bending/-sliding "smear" technique of his is the coolest!
So yeah, Danny’s a true American original, somebody we used to consider one of “ours” over this side of the pond…that is, until he moved back Stateside…ah well!
…as they say: you never know what you’ve got till it’s gone…
Anyhow, I believe he’s now gigging back in his home city of Cincinnati. PLEASE do yourselves a favour and go see him if you are anywhere near!!! He’s plays a totally unique blues guitar, writes great toons, has a wicked sense of humour, and puts together a compelling show.
If you enjoyed the clip you might be interested to know that most of Danny’s solo work is now available at the various online MP3 stores. Seeing as you can cherry-pick buying this way, I would grab a bunch of the following: Drink Muddy Water, Cool Disposition, Sherri & I’ve Had Trouble With The Blues off the live “Mother’s Day” sets, followed by Pink Hot Rod, Avocado Eldorado & Breakfast In Texas off “Hubcap Heaven”
(Going "off-road" for a taste of the oh-so-funky rock stuff he did with his band Roogalator, try Cincinatti Fatback, All Aboard & Sweet Mama Kundalini from “The Roogalator Years” – fabulous stuff, I love it!)
A bit harder to find, but back with the blues again, are the albums he did with The Deluxe Blues Band in London in the 80’s – “Motorvating” on Appaloosa CD and “The Deluxe Blues Band” on Blue Horizon LP are well worth hunting down.
Just to clarify: I have no connection with Danny, except an abiding admiration, I just thought y’all might enjoy some of the above!
"All Aboard"?
PS: Sorry about the "shouty" font size - I wrote it in Word, pasted it across and then couldn't re-size it!

that's a note for note bill jennings cop, the unaccopanied coda to "Dark Eyes" from the album "Glide On"Thanks Pete - I had a listen to 'Dark Eyes' from "Glide On" - similar idea but Junior's lick sounds all different to my tin ear. I'd like to know where Junior got it now...
Don’t know if this comes as strictly West Coast-approved but I thought you guys might enjoy a bit of the following:

Mr Danny Adler!!! I used to go to see Danny Adler in Fulham before he went back to Cincinnati - hell of a player. He could do a great T-Bone Walker take off, and had that amazing way of bending three notes together. Justin Hildreth, Roogalator's drummer, is a friend.

Had a bit of a GAS attack recently. Have added a TC Electronics Tremolo, a Van Amps Solemate and a '65 Gibson Melody Maker to the stable.
I used the Tremolo and Reverb at two gigs last week. One at a tiny London bar going into a Tweed Deluxe clone and one at a festival going into a Tweed Bassman clone. At both gigs the amps were fully wound-up with no other pedals. The Trem sounded fantastic. It has a 'soft' button which I really like as it stops the signal from getting too 'square'. I ended up keeping it on all night at both gigs mostly in a very subtle '3D' way with the odd 'swamp' moment during one or two Delta-ish tunes.
The Reverb was very authentic at the small gig really adding something to some of the numbers when I turned it up. At the larger gig it was fairly superfluous. As a general rule, I still prefer no reverb. But, it is good to have the option and will be great in the studio.
The Melody Maker has not had an outing yet. It came with the original croc case (looks very Robert Johnson) and feels great to play. After the two gigs I realised I spent both nights with the strat on the bridge pup using the tone as appropriate. Both the neck and middle just didn't cut it for me. The neck sounded too 'SRV' and the middle sounded worse than the bridge (this is probably because the amps were wound up). So, I thought I would look for an esquire as a back up (rather than the p90 Les Paul I had an eye on). I ended up trying the MM and loved it. Not too loud, lots of bite and a really nice vibe. They are cheap too which is a bonus !! Tone on 5 seems to be the place to start. Will report on the MM after I gig it this Friday.
Something else I tried was turning up at both gigs without a pick and forcing myself to use fingers instead. Doing this Gatemouth style really paid off giving an authentic tone you just can't get any other way.
All good fun.
Cheers,
Phil

Jimmy Carpenter is on your friends list
hey B
jimmy is my bro! we lived together for a couple years when i was in the nighthawks and he was with jimmy thackery (which made for some Very funny moments, let me tell you). we all shared a pretty infamous house in silver spring that for about 10 years was occupied by only touring blues guys. umm use your imagination, oh the pain.... the chain was finally broken when i moved out the first normal citizen moved in, lol. and yeah armand i met once in richmond, helluva nice guy. me and yimmy drove down separately that day; we had gigs in 2 different clubs in shackoe bottom. he was with armand at the tobacco company and i was with little ronnie at cheryl's joint. i miss richmond, been awhile
amp on all tracks is a '67 ampeg reverbrocket2 with an emi cannibis rex.

About Gatemouth's no-picking style; he has the weirdest technique. His fingers just hang there straight down. I don't use a pick, but I use a more Jimmy Vaughan style, with the right hand curled up more. You get more control that way.
If I let my fingers start flopping around, I get fart tone, but not a GOOD fart tone. Kind of an anemic "too many raisins" fart tone as opposed to the more robust "big bowl of chili beans" fart tone that we find more desireable.

I tend to keep the Index finger straight without bending at the nuckle. It seems to help things. This is a play on the Wes Montgomery straight thumb technique. The moment you start bending that nuckle all the tone falls away. Though I talk about doin't it Gatemouth style, it was JLV who inspired me to try it. I just love that tone he gets on his bros tribute gig.

Something else I've been doing lately, when appropriate. Just bang away with your thumb. Curl up your fingers so you aren't even tempted to use them, and just pound. You don't get any speed out of this, and it isn't purty, but it works wonders on that Excello gutter-blues stuff.

Almost twenty years ago, my friend Gary Korb located Finis Tasby....God knows he found him somewhere not working, and signed him to Schanneckie (I'm sure I didn't spell it correctly) Records...a very small independent "granola head" label. I was called in to do some demo tapes with him, and on two numbers, he wanted a throbbing vibrato, and directed me to "swat and flop the strings"..."put some eeeevil into it". Well...there went a perfectly set up '70 335, and an equally fine playing '62 R.I. Strat....I put "Heavy Bottom" Ernie Ball strings on both axes, wrapped some surgical tape on my right thumb and for finger...and started trying to figure it all out. One of my mentors, Jerome "Jay" Owens (God rest his wonderful soul) was with me, and he grabbed the Strat. Jay taught me how to "pop" the strings by just flicking down on them with the side of my thumb, and also pulling up here and there. Worked nicely with an old Ampeg Jet ganged into a early 60's Reverberocket. The producer supplied us with some nice old Maggies....which had great throbbing vibrato, but they wouldn't fart out like the smaller Ampegs. I also used some type of oriental tremelo box with what looked like a mercury vial or something built into it. Real floor shaking vibrato. Still haven't been able to master that Slim Harpo early Chambers Brothers, Earl Hooker "evil thing" perfectly.
Any one know about Slim's backline for recording ?

Ronnie did alot of left coast flavored grooves with Roomful, and when he was The Broadcasters, occasionaly picking up that ES-5....you'd think T-Bone had come back from the dead.
IMHO : The Peace of Mind sessions comprised a pleasing amalgum of West Coast, Swamp and Texas Blues themes.

No argument here--a well-constructed post there, George (as usual, of course!). I agree that post-Rounder Ronnie has been really...well, I want to say "hard to classify", but meant in the best possible way. I think Language Of The Soul is almost my favorite record of his--although since Soul Searching was the current release when I first saw him at Bethlehem PA's Godfrey Daniels in '88 or so, I guess I'll always love that one most. I remember buying that on vinyl at Godfrey's at that first gig. Still can't imagine how I lucked into finding Ronnie Earl back then when I was just 17...it definitely wasn't smarts or good taste!
And yo, George--what the hell did you do to your hand? You've got to protect those hooks in the shop, brother!

It was Volume 2.5 or 3 depending on the mic (except the Turner which being Lo-Z I had to crank to 5.5), Bass, 8 and a bee's dick, Treble 4 and Presence 3. Tubes are all NOS in the standard circuit config. I have a matched pair of Tung Sol 5881s in the Power section. In other words, the amp is set up for guitar.

Charlie Lange had his booth there. He tried to scrape up some more Ulysses James, the guitar player on the first Roy Hawkins CD, but came up empty. Ended up with some this and that, including some Tiny Webb and Chuck Norris, and some Lightnin' Slim. I got away with a mere flesh wound.

Thanks for the name check man! Backing up Harman was a real honor and thrill. Dude's a total nutjob, by the way...and funny as hell. Everything out of his mouth was a razor-sharp one-liner--like the Groucho Marx of the blues, that guy.
Incidentally, and this is probably the ultimate place to mention this: James Day is always on the lookout for guitar players who really 'get' this stuff. It's a fun band to work with. I really like the drummer--but then again, I'm a bass player, so I guess that goes without saying...

yeah.......me and @ 15 other folks caught Chris Cain this afternoon........and I had to split after 1 set, as I was hurtin' a bit.
He was just absolutely incredible.......what an amazing talent, great personality and sweetheart of a person. Sings like BB, plays like a demon, and just loves to perform, on AND off stage.......a real "class clown" type, but self-effacing.
Played 335 (never left the neck bucker) straight into an old Music Man RD50........and the range of tones and dynamics he got with just his volume control was inspiring...........never muddy, but never piercing, either.
He did a LOOOONG version of "Do You Call That a Buddy" in Fm which just built and built and kept building until it couldn't go anywhere........so he took it back down and built it up again even higher........wow.
Whether you love him or not ( I imagine he might be a bit too "uptown" for some folks on this thread) there's no denying he's a MASSIVE talent that deserves to be a huge star.
I'm not sure ill-fitting denim overalls were the best choice for gig wear, though, I have to admit............they looked silly on Elvin Bishop and worse on Chris.

Played the aforementioned Blind Willie fest this weekend (and I'll spare you the whining about the nearly two-days of combined flying/driving involved to play a 75 min. set), and while I missed their set, had a good time visiting with Anson, Harmon, Wes Starr, and the fellas. Was thrilled to hear Mavis w/ Holmstrom, Jeff Turmes, and Steve Hodges (caught her earlier this year on a package show backed by the North Miss. Whatchamacallit Allstars and went away under-whelmed). She also had three singers, one of whom was a Staple singer. Of most interest was Rick, as I had not heard him much since Piazza. Being accustomed to his loopy, swinging style, I was amused at his almost strictly low-down, pentatonic playing on this gig, with the tremolo almost never turned off. Very cool. He had a two p.u. H-44 and a tele tuned down a whole step. Did a little rave-up, Hendrix-type deal with the band in the middle of the set, and one number with just him backing up Mavis. Turmes played the genius, money notes, and Hodges did his best Keltner imitation with shakers and tamborines, etc. augmenting his trap playing. Great show with the singing showcased, accompanied by sparse, somewhat-primitive backing. So, was there any TGP'ers at this fest? Would have liked to have met ya.
I said I wasn't gonna whine, but let me say this: air travel just gets worse and worse (and worse) every time I fly. With delays and other b.s., I am amazed we made it to the show in time for our set (or that I made it back in time for tonight's gig)! Sheesh!
Dan's recent post mentioned Jeremy Johnson of the twin cities. Those that haven't heard him are missing out big-time. One of THE best young blues gtr players out there!

We need to compile a list of players/bands that "cater" the the jump/swing/west coast blues style, both new and old. I'm always on the look out for more. Here's a short list off the top of my head...
Kid Ramos
Kirk Fletcher
Nick Curran
Duke Robillard
Junior Watson
Sean Costello
T-Bone Walker
Jimmy Reed
Ronnie Earl
Kevin Mark
Roomful Of Blues
James Harman Band
Hollywood Fats
Omar and the Howlers
Rod Piazza
Got more?
Don't forget Phillip Walker, one of the OG's of West Coast (by way of Louisiana and Texas) blues . . .

Ha !!
Not guilty, though I was in a London Pub (The Ship & Shovel) with PoppaStoppa just the other week saying I had my eye on it. I think the price is fine (with the UK exchange rate) considering all the original stuff it comes with, but just think these guitars have become too much of a bandwagon for little ole me to jump on at this stage. I got the MMaker and am now wondering which tweed clone to add to the Narrow Panel amps (Deluxe, Pro and Bassman) I've been building up over the past few years.
Any suggestions?? A Twin maybe??
Cheers,

I see they've come down in price by about $700. A few of them sold for $2500 after the Tom Waits appearance.
I dunno, I've been using my customized two-pickup H-44 a lot, even in the "we play it all" band. I got on a Merle Haggard kick the other night, and that bridge pickup is something else.

Where does the "wacky axe that does one thing" come in? H-44? Mine (with added bridge p.u.) does it A-L-L (as states Mr Miller). I would not hesitate to take this gtr to ANY gig, whether it's a show that would logically call for my ES-5, or a country (tele) gig. In fact, if I had to eliminate all the damn gtrs cluttering up my house and just keep one, I believe it would be my $150 (plus $20 for the extra p.u.) H-44. Vanity gtr?!? This is an ugly little turd that shines like a diamond, sonically! A PRS or a fender/gibson custom shop is a vanity gtr! Validate THIS!

Sorry.....In my very humble opinion...$2,000 + is beyond validation. I paid $175 for mine, and I've put about 50 hours of work into straightening out the neck. O.K. It was a labor of love...
The guitar has its merits, and does exude a mojo all its own, I'll admit that...Hell, I own one....but when the neck is a big as a tree trunk, and you can walk under the strings, and maybe not play anything above the 8th fret....and someone is willing to buy one sight unseen for 250 times the original cost just because Tom Waits, or some bearded guitar guru on the west coast play one...then I think we need to roll out the couch.
The original point I was alluding to was that some folks'd buy one just to be seen with it...(eg) the clueless buying into the essence of coollism. I bought mine for what my hands and amp get out of it....and I still hate the damned neck.

Some guys get the right gear for the job...and some guys just get the right gear. I know one whitebread suburban tech-company middle manager hobbyist that's always on the prowl for old Stellas because Blind Junior Boy Smith played them. Nevermind that he'd have never played them by choice. But that's neither here nor there: authenticity is authenticity. Sometimes I think we shouldn't mock those guys as they help keep music retail afloat--but they do it by propping up a grossly overinflated vintage market.
Apologies to any whitebread suburban tech-company middle manager hobbyists who I might have offended (surely there are none of those on TGP, right?)
Oh, and also, I've been meaning to mention this but making up Blind Junior Boy Smith just reminded me: I'm totally digging on Andrew "Jr Boy" Jones lately. I heard a track of his on Comcast's Music Choice blues channel. How come you guys haven't mentioned this cat before? You're slipping, dudes...

Is this a 'vanity' amp ??
Phil, Well... I dunno if this would qualify as a "Vanity amp". I don't think anyone would think I'm cool just for owning or using one of these... not that I would care. It sounds cool. I've been buying and selling these amps to find a couple that sound the best and have pretty much finished that project... this one is good but I have another that sounds just a hair better so it's on the block.
Aren't we all inspired to seek out specific instruments because of some touchstone of an visual reference (like seeing someone who's playing you admire using some piece of gear on film or photo), or a tonal reference (like figuring out what guitar or amp was used on a favourite recording)? It helps take some of the guess work out of things... narrow down the search so to speak.
IMO, the H44 Stratotone is an interesting example because I don't remember even seeing one until Rick H. started using his. I think that was an inspired choice on his part (picking it out of that shop in California) and players don't use them just because Rick and Junior do (or Tom Waits or Marc Ribot, or Jon Ross, or...)... but because they can also sound incredible for making music. Adding a bridge pickup makes them even better. I like to say they have a prehistoric feel because of the big neck, but it's actually pretty comfy if you can get used to it. They do often need work (50 hours George, wow!!!) to get them up and running though, I'll easily admit that.
Given a blank canvas, no knowledge of previous players or instruments, or tonal references... if all of us walked into a vintage shop I doubt we would all come out with similar gear.... those previous inspirations can't be denied.
OK, here's a clip of my Vanity Combo (tm) ... a modded H44 with bridge pickup added into a Valco Supreme amp similar to the one pictured above... neck, then bridge pickup, then both out-of-phase:

Alright, I'll admit it, I got mine so I'd be just like...uh...Scott Miller, yeah, that's it! Wow, George, whatta drag to have such a bad experience with H-44's, playability wise. I'm on #4 and each one has had real decently playable action, without much help. The one I'm playing now came sans bridge. I just reached into one of my junk boxes, pulled out a saddle top from an old archtop bridge, stuck it under the strings, tuned 'em up, and it was perfect, so it's still on there. I had an H-88 (for a minute!) and I had to replace the fingerboard to make that one playable, but it had a (comparatively) weencie, little neck. You know, more like a '50 broadcaster. With the H-44's jimundo neck dimensions combined with the thick slice of bazzilion rosewood, I ask: TRUSSROD? What the hell is a trussrod gonna do? 'Course, if one doesn't particularly care for a neck with the girth of a 25 foot python, then one isn't going to get too excited about these, are they? I find I seem to be more tolerant of different neck shape/sizes of late (f'instance, the speedy-necked Firebird that just moved into my house! Ooooooo!), but when I go back to that monstrous chunk o' Harmony poplar, it's always a happy homecoming for us both.

I saw Marc Ribot last week, giving his H-44 a workout. He has a whole bunch of pedals to make it sound really ugly, but whenever he played it clean through a big-ass Twin, it was a gorgeous tone. Being Marc Ribot, he also did weird things like mic it unamplified, E-bow, put a spring under the strings, and so on. See? Versatile!!!

Some speakers are much louder than others for the same power. For example new Celestions can be twice as loud as RI Jensens. For volume it won't matter how many you have hooked up, a single 10" can beat multiple 12's or 15's, it's efficiency that counts.
Also the speaker impedance should be matched to the output of the amp.
Tone however is a whole separate question.

I needs me a Clark or Vicky Tweed Super. That is probally the best harp tone IMO I've heard in a long time. Great phrasing too on the video. Thanks, Shawn

Just my two cents, but I've actually played Jon's H-44 on a couple of gigs and it's pretty damn hard to beat.
And from the photos Jon has shared of that particular guitar, it's also beat pretty damn hard, in a beautiful way I might say! :)

I have one of those Valco amps. It is simply awesome. It is the best bedroom amp ever made. I get a big smile whenever I plug into mine at home. It gets the sounds heard in those clips at a very low volume.
I had Rick Holmstrom's amp guy go through and re cap mine. He also added a line out like he did for Rick. I use it to run through a bigger amp. For smaller places it is a black face deluxe and for bigger places a silver face twin. I can get that tone a nearly any volume with this setup. I am really happy with this setup.

So, what's the output of those Valco amps, 10-12 watts? Just curious. Also, I wonder what a Celestion G12 Century would do for this amp, whether it would make it loud enough for club use unmiked(and without having to use a slave amp), without affecting its tone in any bad way.
Speaking of small, really old guitar amps, a guy at a jam last night played through his little mother-of-toilet-seat green Magnatone amp that was probably the same era as the Valco. It was 2 X 6V6. He didn't mike it or put it on a chair. He was just cutting through, but his tone was all dirt, no headroom. Great blues tone though.

I would say these little Valcos are less than 10 watts. They are about as loud as a Champ. The speaker is a field coil type and is really good. Another speaker would likely be more efficent and louder.

I got beat hard on mine by a guy in Tennessee. He posted a deceptive photo on fleabay, and when I got the instrument, I almost puked...."I been had !!" The seller disconnected his phone, and e-mail. I had to remove the fingerboard and practically broil the neck to get it straight....then use a half gallon of stripper to get the decoupage Urethane finish off...and the pickup was shot....O.K. It was only $175...so I'm still ahead...but, it has been a real project. I'm still kicking myself in the ass over a MINT Aldens that Thinsocks found for me last year...and I walked on the deal.
I am re-carving and shaping the neck on my beater to be more like a USA Custom FAT neck....something like that, my arthritis can tolerate.
BTW...nice axe porno Jon.

These Valco model 51's are my favorite amp of all time. I have three Oahus'. I had a Supro branded one that I gave to a good friend.
You are a brave man to play a 335 through one.
the way the speakers jump in mine with humbuckes I've been afraid to play anything but single coils so I won't blow one. That's not such a bad thing because I hardly ever play humbuckers.
The one that I like the best has the speaker going anyway. Any suggestions who to have recone it?
I've seen that Rick Holmstrom uses one with a line out into a bigger amp. How is that wired?
If I could find an amp with 30-35 watts that sounded like these I would be in hog heaven.

Hey guys
OK, it's not West Coast blues per se, but my band has just completed a recording project and a couple of tunes are up on our myspace. I'd be innerested in what y'all think. We've got the classics Bumblebee Blues and Men Are Just Like Streetcars from the project, Mama's Blooz House is from a demo session we did a year or so ago.

Whaddaya mean: can us guy's tell you where to get the above mentioned spkrs, or do we have an opinion (no shortage here) on them? It depends on what sound you want. A Bassman is capable of a big, clean sound (up to a certain volume), and if that's what you're after, then you want tight spkrs that resist breakup to a high threshold. If you want some sloppy, raggedy-ass Bassman sound, you want old, or well-broken in spkrs. I used to have a re-ish Bassman that never sounded so good as it did after I did a coupla gigs playing upright bass through it!

I'm suprised he didn't blow your speakers. I love those Emi Blue Alnicos those CVR's had, but blew at least two pairs of them, in different amps.

Hey Shawn. Missed your earlier post.
Glad you like it. In fact, I'm glad I posted it because I had been trying to figure which amp to sell to fund a new amp purchase (Clark Tyger) and hearing all of those amps back to back made me realise it ain't gonna be the Super that gets cut loose from the herd.
That amp is a cracker. Did you listen to the green bullet, ev630 and astatic CR clips with the super? Pretty nasty little animal with almost any mic...

All great stuff. The tone on that lap steel is beautiful. Anyone know what amp he was playing through (I think it's in the background)?
Also that singer on "Last Time" was singin' it from deep in his soul. Thanks for that, thinsocks.

Had an interesting conversation last night at a Jam. A mate of mine who writes for Juke Blues magazine was raving about a new cd he had been sent to review. Said it was right up my street. Done by some amazing brazilian swing guitarist called Igor Prado.
I had to laugh when he asked if I had come across Igor.
Just shows the quality posting on this board.
So congrats Igor, you have an amazing review about to hit the shops courtesy of Juke Blues and my mate Ian.
Top stuff. :BEER

I had mine wired by the same guy that did Ricks. He is a part time amp repair guy who works for BMW doing car repairs during the day. What he does is add a jack with a couple of resitors. I think he taps right off the transformer. I gave Valcotone (Sean Kilback) is going to give him a call and figure out how to do it. I am not all that technical. If Sean doesn't get anywhere, I will post some detailed pictures along with the resitor values.
You just put a regular guitar cable from this new jack to the front of a bigger amp like you would plug a guitar in. I do get pretty close to the orginal tone at just about any volume I want. You have to watch turning either of the amps up to high or you get lots of noise. But with a bigger amp like a Twin, it is more than loud enough to play anywhere. Through a Deluxe it is still loud enough to play most clubs unmiked.
