Hey George,

Hope you're doin' OK. Just talked to Anson. He's in Ottawa now and headin' to Syracuse next. He may be coming your way. Give 'em a call. I'm sure he'd like to know how you're doing. He sounded great and was enjoying himself, but he said the logistics of getting James and the Rockets to gigs is challenging at times. He also said it's a little different using backline amps. As you might expect the RI amps have sounded considerably different to him than the old Super Reverbs he had used at one time (before the Dr.Z). Anyway, sounds like he's headin' your way, so heads up.

Tom,
George is doing well. His home computer is out of commission and he's still on sick leave so no access for him.
I'll pass your message along..

That Fats/Paladins disc is cool. I haven't had time to check and see if its the same show as the bootleg I have of Fats with the Paladins though. I'll try to do that and let folks know so you don't go buy something you already have. Its straight bootleg quality though. Maybe a little better. They tried to get it sounding as good as they could.

Its interesting because it reminds me of the stark difference between him and Junior Watson. I've always wondered how anyone could compare those guys to each others. I have considered them to be apples and oranges. Both wildly talented in their own way and Junior being the one who's totally unique. In other words, Junior could do Fats but I have a hard time believing Fats could do Junior. Hearing this disc just reminds me of this even more.

It also made me realize that I can't ever remember hearing a recording of Fats without a 2nd guitar player. I wonder how he would have sounded without a rhythm guitar or piano in the band. He sounds cool with the Paladins. I love their drummer.

Note: There is an ultra cool photo of Fats and Watson with the rest of the Paladins in the CD booklet that comes with the disc.

Just ordered the Fats and Paladins too. Too bad there was so little recorded by Michael. He was decades ahead of his time, yet played a style reminiscent of decades before his time. Great, great, player.

Blues lyric of the month:

If you come back sweet daddy, I'll meet you at the door
Yes, if you come back sweet daddy, I'll meet you at the door
I'll show you I can love you

Fats could smoke JR anytime, and had the TONE.

Well......it's not about competition, to me...........

........and Jr. is one of my all-time faves. Amazingly inventive and melodic player. You know it's him from one note...........which is rare.

Fats, on the other hand, had this amazing, unstoppable, incredible groove and DRIVE..............that insistent, steam-roller thing that the greatest instrumentalists have. I call it "forward-motion".......like the entire band could just disappear, and even his single notes would still carry the whole thing. When I, and others I hear, try and cop his thing, it ends up being too pushy, edgy, and on top of the beat, whereas Fats just lays it in there, perfectly.

Anyone out there using a new amp for West Coast style blue? Anything that isn't an exact clone of a 50's or 60's Fender? If so, tell us about it. My old amp broke again and I keep thinking it would be nice to have a new amp.

Isn't everything out there just a copy of a 50s/60s design? ;)

I'm just back from a holiday in Florida. Great weather in the US at the moment.

Feets, just missed your Sanford gigs (flew out of Sanford Airport on Thursday morning). Wish I had got the timing better. How did the gigs go??

Cheers,

I know/knew em both.

http://www.myspace.com/kennyblueray

Well, I'm not sure how much it matters if you know/knew them both but I guess that's good to know if that subject ever comes up.

Fats played the box...over and over again. He did it well, and in the groove. Junior does anything but play the box over and over again. He can play the box...I've heard that side of him as well. Juniors wild creativity is a remarkable thing. Not to mention his insane tone. They both have/had great tone.

They're apples and oranges and its not a competition but I still say Junior could play Fats, but Fats would play hell trying to play Junior for more than a song. Both could play classic two guitar westside style Chicago blues till the cows come home. On a desert island, I'd take Junior all day long though.

I love both of them and count them as major influences on anything I'll ever do in music. Two American originals. They don't make 'em like that anymore...whoever the heck 'they' is. :D

What's wrong with the Box?

:) Not a thing!! I personally live there. I'm just saying it is very exciting for me when blues guitar players creatively play outside the box within the classic blues format (a.k.a. keeping it raw and soulful). Sean Costello was a genius at it as well. Sean could play Fats and Junior with one hand tied behind his back! Wish I had that gift.

Apples and oranges is exactly the way to describe them both.

Fats could riff forever and take you with him without falling off that tightrope.

And Junior is great at putting something in a spot you don't expect there, which is just as amazing!

I've been listening to James Harman's Extra Napkins and Mo' Extra Napkins lately. To hear this stuff played like its supposed to 0and still be fresh and original is humbling.

On a different subject, I got the Ham Hocks And Cornbread box from JSP recently. There's some great gems on there. Can anybody tell me about Clifford Bivens. He's got a song on there called Achin' Heart Boogie with some great guitar work. I haven't had a chance to Google him to learn more. Who, what, when, where, etc?

I thought some of you guys would appreciate this old Kay I picked up a while ago and just got back to working condition. Had to have a couple of pickups rewound and it needed a full setup.

http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/6703/dsc01445ku8.jpg

This is a rather rare Kay from what I can gather. Similar to a Speed Demon but not having any f-holes and only five pots instead of six (uses a master volume and a master tone, three pickup volumes). Those funky Kay pickups sound really sweet. Similar to a P90, but definitely have their own vibe. Hollow body sounds good, and doesn't seem to have a feedback problem at volume, at least it didn't last Sunday when I took it out to a jam.

I started a thread on it here: http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=417087 with more pics and spec's.

Sweetfinger beat me off the block, just finished "the thread" whew. Born and raised in DC and an old fart at 60 years I recognized some names from the past and, I guess present it seems. I'm always hungry for all things West Coast Blues oriented so thanks guys for all the information, great place. I almost feel like I know everyone. Currently I'm running around with a H44, H62 and a RI54 plugged into a Bassman with outboard verb. I recently discovered Igor Prado and was pleased to read several posts by him, really enjoyed his CD's. I'm familiar with most of the players mentioned in this thread and am looking forward to discovering more. I host an open Blues Jam on Thursdays www.kennyandthecobras.com (http://www.kennyandthecobras.com) all are welcome if your in the area. I'm a bit bored with the weedly-weedly players but hey, it's my job to please. Again a great room, thanks all.

I'm a finisher by trade. In the mid 70's I made a lap slide and thought I'd do another but never got around to it. I had this chunk of Eastern curly maple sitting in a pile of wood for about 30 years. A few years back I picked up on Rick Holstrom's "Gonna Get Wild" and it messed my head up, "What kind of guitar was putting out those cool ass sounds?" That's when my love affair with the H44's started. While working at the bench one day I spied this hunk of wood and thought "I'll bet a Stratotone size guitar lives in there". I grabbed the 44 laid it on top and it fit. I took a pencil and made an outline and cut it out on the bandsaw (decided on a double cut) and started to work. Several years later I was done. The guitar is one piece of wood, Z90's pickups, 60 year old Brazilian board (compound radius 10" lower/12" upper). Waverly tuners with fossil Ivory buttons. Pickup surrounds switch tip, knob, nut and saddle (compensated) and position markers are also fossil ivory. Back control cover is fossil Mammoth tusk. String thru the body, no tone just volume and selector. It sounds best thru my Blackface Deluxe, no toys. Appreciate the welcome.

hi Fred, I still gig with that amp every once in a while. I changed the first channel pre-amp into a Fender Deluxe/Pro style which seemed to open it up a little bit, a little clearer sounding with a touch more gain. Also, if you pull the trem tube the second channel gain increases. It's a good amp.

I agree Ricky. And vibrato too. Seems to work better pullin' down!

I guess that is why Albert Collins pulled up with his vibrato - kinda the same effect.

As Rudyard 'Lee Hooker' Kipling might have written:

If you position your vibrato above the string rather than below, yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Yeah great playing Igor (sorry, a bit slow in picking up on our Brazilian correspondent's super vids from Rome etc!).

Great vids Igor !!

What's that interval thing you are doing at 2.20 in the first video?

Cheers,
Phil
Phil it sounds like Igor is doing the Grady Martin/Rock & Roll trio thing of playing the top string and the bottom string together, 2 octaves apart.

I played a killer amp last night; Marvin Green has a blackface Vibrolux that Andy Santana did something to... I'm not a tech person, but from what I understood it had to do with adding a midrange control and essentially turning into a Super, if that makes any sense. It had the best clean Strat tone I've ever heard. If I was less or more of a man, I would have stolen it.

Cool amp, but I thought it was dialed in a bit treble-heavy to my ears(with all due respect to Marvin Greene, who's a great player). Could've turned the bass up on it a bit more. Other than that, the amp sounded fine. You got a good sound out of it. I didn't know that Vibrolux of his had been modded, I always assumed it was stock.

I'm tellin' ya, Scott, we need to fix you up with an old PV amp, with a middle control that pours on the mids after '2':D. Plenty o' midrange on tap.

I am very pleased to announce I am now the proud owner of a Gibbo 56 VOS monster axe !! It took a little courage and a lot of green but I finally took the plunge yesterday.

It got it's first outing that evening at a jam in Maidenhead. Nice weight though it packs a serious punch. It had to wrestle with a silverface twin but came off by far the better party. Biting on the bridge, mellow on the neck, sweet in-between. Magic.

You ol' dog, you got the only other guitar I want to add to my collection (or perhaps the '54). I have the Epi version with Lollar pu's and upgraded electronics and it plays and sounds killer. But...nothing like the real thing. And I'm gonna' have to do it like you did...close my eyes, swallow hard, and just do it. But I've gotta' muster the courage first. I'm in the same boat. For some reason even though wanting one rather badly I keep getting something else instead.
Maybe it's because I know I want it bad enough I know it will happen eventually.

Passed up a good deal on an '06 recently when I was the first to see it in the Emporium.
I guess I could sacrifice an humbucker one to do it been playing almost all single coil lately anyway.

Damn!!! That's some of the finest slow blues I've heard in a lonnnggg time. Both Jimmie and Ronnie were "ON" that night. Jimmie with his ultra-cool understated style and Ronnie squeezing every drop of soul out of that Strat. Great tones, great playing. Ronnie's tone was F-A-T (Through Jimmie's spare Matchless?) too. I want a DVD of that gig (I'm sure there is none)!! A clinic in real deal, blues, blues, blues. Thanks, Goldenstrat, for those great clips. :dude:dude:dude:dude

I've so been gassin for one of those Matchless Chieftains.......those clips of JLV and Ronnie did not help at all! DAMN!

Gongrats on the r6 goldie....now you gotta do the outta' phase push/pull pot mod. It does that t-bone thing...and if you fiddle with it it is possible to dial in almost anything. Last night using it out of phase, messing around I was getting a killer mid 60's B.B. King es-345 tone with my r6 into my tweed bassman. Those p-90's goldtops are just great....once I got mine I sold my es-335 and my es-295 cause my r6 outdid them for the tones I was looking for. Both were beautiful guitars but no regrets...a good p-90 goldtop les paul can just about do it all.

I caught Matt Stubbs the other night with Charlie Musslewhite at Blues on Grand. Matt was sounding great! Tom, I thought maybe you or Jason would have made it? It was a packed house anyway. Wish I could hear Matt in the midwest when he is out with Lynwood Slim!

Bocce Boogie: Big Walter W/Vintage Sugar Ray & The Blue Tones (Ronnie) & John Nicolas

Fats w/The Palladins: While not the most trad blues band, w/Fats they sure sound like one.Fats is playing ...well like Fats...a true blues box workout and splashy outboard tone. Worth it.
Billy Boy Arnold plays Sonny Boy 1... Great understated playing, Billy Flynn is the right guy for this set. Mel Brown is a bonus... tunes played by someone who understands them and learned from the man himself.
Rusty and The Roadmasters w/Kim...Live @ Moe's Alley (you lucky West Coasters)
Tiger man era I think, Innes,Taylor,Kaplan,Zinn and Kim! Thanks Charlie,I want more!!
Mannish Boys Low Down Feelin. I wish I could be in this band...The good stuff, Ramos and Junior and everybody else for that matter.

One sucks me in for awhile then I switch to the next and rediscover them all over again. These truely are great guitars. I play a lot of cheap guitars and like them but the R6 is one guitar that is really worth the extra dough.

That's a hard one as the R4 & R6 are both great in their own right.
I'm shooting for an R6 but now that I've taken to Teles the R4 is getting more tempting.

Some said, "An R6 is 70% Gibson/ 30% Fender
The R4 is 60% Gibson/ 40% Fender" in as far as single coil tone.

Anyone tried or own Don Mare Strat pu's? Wha'da'ya' think of 'em? Does the mid pu get a nice "Anson tone"? For the bridge pu I really like David Gross' tone on the Louis Electric Amps website where he demos the KR-12. I think those are Fralins but if the Don Mares nail that tone I'd just go with them. Which Don Mare Strat pu's do you have/like between the two sets he offers? I have and LOVE his Tele pu's.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I took the R6 to the shop yesterday to have a push/pull out of phase mod done. The guy in the shop was weary of doing the mod on a high end gibbo and persuaded me to just have the pups wired out of phase on the basis "the only sound you loose it both pups on full in phase". I went along with it. Anyway, it is my first out of phase guitar and I am just lovin’ the new sounds. This guitar is really changing the way I hear those 50s & 60s BB King recordings, TBone, Fats stuff, Guitar Slim and of course Freddie. Wonderful stuff.

So far through my 50s clone Bassman and Pro (with some 'verb from a VanAmps SoleMate) I am getting all of these old sounds. I love the way the guitar becomes less and less out of phase as you take the volumes away from each other. For example, I am running both tones on about 6. If I have both volumes on, say, 10 I get a very twangy TBone sound. If I roll the neck volume back to 8 (where it just starts to get more bassy again) I get early BB King. If I roll back to 7 I get Fats. Freddie and Guitar Slim both seem to be in the treble pup at varying ends of the tone knob.

I am lovin' this axe !!!

Someone said they dithered for a while before getting one and when they went to the shop they would always end up getting something else. Same here. I think that is because they are a lot of R6s out there that just don't have the mojo. Just keep looking and you'll find the one you want.

As for the R4, R6 decision, I decided that if the R6 was good enough for Sean Costello (who of course choose his having gigged an original '53 for ages) it was good enough for me. But who knows. Just get the one that rings forever. Mine does. It I play an open E Chord it just doesn't stop. Amazing.

Cheers,
Phil

I went to a guitar store today and bought myself a 1964 Gretsch Anniversary and a Gretsch tube amplifier from the same era. They had all the Gibson Historics- 1952, 1954, 1956 reissues and some sunbursts. I thought about trying some out. But after taking a good look at them I came to the realization that there was a reason I bought a 1974 Les Paul Deluxe the previous time I was there- I just like the Les Paul Deluxe more than those Historics.

I had an open mind when I went searching for P90 goldtops between the two. I was only able to play 3 R4's. I played about 10 R6's. This particular R6 was the best of the lot. I have other wraptail guitars and really like them. I think it just comes down to the particular guitar you happen to play.

BTW, I had an Agile goldtop with Lollars and have played the EPI goldtop several times. The Gibson R6 is worth the money.

I had a great gig last night backing a harp/singer guy, one of my favorites ever, no pressure to play just like T-Bone or anyone else (except the harp guy wanted "more reverb- like Jr. Watson") . Noel,

Sorry I didn't make the Musselwhite show, I was taking a weekend away from music to spend with my fiancee. My ears have been getting pounded all summer, so I've taken the last two weekends away from music. Note: not "ear damage", just too much music lately. I wanted to see Musselwhite, but I just wasn't in the right frame of mind.

BTW, Noel and Tom, you guys should some see my new band, "The El Dorado's", were playing August 31st at the Indianola winery, should be lots of real deal blues, we got Malcolm Wells to play harp and sing, so it certainly shouldn't suck... We'll be playing more and more over the next year, we'll do some trio gigs with me singing, and some gigs backing up other frontmen from the area. We plan to do real deal blues, and also roots music, and from time to time totally throw people off with like a Buck Owens or Johnny Cash tune.

Tom,

I gotta hear that Louis Electric, I just haveta. You, me and Noel need to get together this year, before the weather turns on us. Hit me up with an email you guys.

PS,

I just picked up a Torre-vibe from Weber and I love it. I had it built by one of the guys on Webers build list (Bryce Callahan). He build the whole thing for $150.

The reverb is really killer and sounds unreal through my 1955 5E3. It sounds alot better than my '63 RI. I used to own a real '63 and I sold it because the RI was close. Maybe it was a bad one because this one really jumps out.

The trem is very 50's sounding. The standard weber has the harmonic vibrato. The Torre mod one is bias trem.

I owned a Vicky Reverberato and I did not think the reverb was that magnificent (compared to a '63 RI) and the trem was way too "pretty" for me.

I wish the Weber went a little bit deeper but the speed range covers super slow to fast (anything I would need).

There was a 10% off sale when I orderd so $369 was my total (not inc. ship).

Bryce did that incredible wiring job for $150. It's a work of art.

Yoo dun guud bro!! I have an Uncle Spot reverb tank that I really like, but you got tremolo with your reverb...and for less money. I think my unit was $715. give or take a few bucks. It does sound great though. Congrats on a beautiful reverb/trem tank.

Jason,

Here it is

http://pic80.picturetrail.com:80/VOL849/3235589/20194665/327660258.jpg

http://pic80.picturetrail.com:80/VOL849/3235589/20194665/327660274.jpg

The trem can be modified to get deeper. Mine goes plenty deep. I'll have to look up the mod after work and post back. It's a simple one resistor change IIRC.

I know a little while back people were wondering where all the New Englanders had gone and why we really haven't heard from them as much. We see Duke and Ricky here and there but otherwise it's been a little quiet. The other day I was channel surfing and I realized that the reason we haven't heard from Ryan Hartt was that he had quit music to pursue a new calling. Indeed, he had his hair colored and has gone undercover as a pastry chef on the Food Network.

I saw Mark dress down his guitar player on stage pretty firmly for "walking all over him", several years ago. The guitar player at that time was Chris Masterson...monster player. I didn't notice he was walking on Mark, but evidently Mark did. I thought Chris was doing some nice fills in the background, but it was evidently too much for Mark. I was kind of embarrassed for Chris as Mark was rather adament. :worried

I've heard fairly consistent positive comments about both. But don't be too quick to rule out the Epiphone '56 LP Goldtop. I installed all new electronics and Lollar pu's. It sounds and plays great. Has a great neck, stays in tune, sounds great, looks great, about 8.5lbs, did I say it sounds great? And, yes, it's a Chinese one.

Edwards are made by ESP in Japan and are fine guitars... you can't go wrong with them... they are reasonable weights, play well, and sound good. Their P90 gold top LP has a nice medium neck, bigger than most MIJ guitars.

Epiphones are mostly made in Korea (or China) except for the Elite/Elitist series which is MIJ.

Dillion are Korean made I think.

I've played some Tokai's too.... I'd go with Edwards.

TwoFeets
07-30-2008, 02:44 PM
The Dillion and Epiphones are all MIK. Not sure if the same factory but they are MIK and I think maybe even China.

The higher end Tokai's and the Edwards are MIJ. Tokai's been around a long time. Edwards is a brand name of ESP.

I haven't played my friend's Edwards too much but I will say it has an advantage over my Tokai in being equipped with USA Seymour Duncans from the factory, whereas the stock Tokai pickups were very low output and kind of weak.

I've been losing sleep over the black Edwards LP Custom with P90's.

I have been working on a blackguard tele (refin) purchase with Jay Rosen so I've been going to his site alot.

Something told me to look under the ES-330 link today and I did.

I called up Jay and snagged it.

I paid what I sold mine for last year so I nullified any profit. However, I still paid under market for it originally so I'm back to square one.

This one is even in better shape than the one I sold.

Yeah - awesome guitar. As S.W. said, the previous owner put a Gibson headstock overlay on it and changed out tuners to Klusons. I swapped out the stock Seymour Duncans (which were fine, btw) with the Lollar 50s winds (which are brilliant, btw!) and did the push-pull pot out-of-phase mod. It is indeed my number one guitar. It covers all the ground I need, from 50s B.B King through to Lockwood harp back up stuff through to more modern styles (i.e. 60s B.B. King) :)

Chris, the replacement part is accutronics 4ABC1B for a two spring or 9ABC1B for the three spring. I like two springs better for traditional sound but it's been years since I've had to buy one. I've heard that it's tough to find a new two spring pan that sounds good and that lots of people are going to the more modern three spring pans just cause their tone isn't so crappy. I don't know that from experience though. All you can do is buy a 4ABC1B and try it. Before doing that though, pull the pan out of the bag and inspect it. Lots of times a little wire breaks loose in a manner where you can resolder it. Then maybe tape it up and try to do something to strain relieve it so it doesn't snap again. Or let a tech repair it (some techs can even put in a "harvested" old transducer in your old pan). If you buy a pan, you can check Antique Electronic Supply, Weber or Mojotone. Hoffman amps probably sells them too.

Regarding the Dillions - the one I played sounded great but weighed a ton and was real neck heavy. Thin neck and a real cheesy finish - super thick poly with a real large flake gold that didn't look right. So I'd skip the Dillion and follow Valco's advice.

Boy, I am loving my new Piedmont. I got the 3/6/9db regulator and the Weber 10-A-100-8s - mid-50s P10R copies.

Bob at the Perfect Note wasn't kidding. I'm only putting a little bass in the signal and the bottom end is outrageous. The other tone controls are useful - I can put in some mid and it doesn't start doing the banshee thing and there is a whole range available in the volume. Normally with tweeds and hi-gain mics you have between 0 and 2.5 before it howls.

The cab resonance is unbelievable. I'm familiar with tweeds and resonance but this is off the charts good. It's a cliche, but I simply cannot imagine needing reverb with this beast.

Even with the regulator on 9db attenuation, this thing has a fat, verby tone with lots of cool harmonic overtones. What's more, I have hardly used this thing and I can hear the speakers loosening up. I sound like a freakin' noob, but really this amp has stunning character and mojo.

It's official: forget all the boutique amps (including other Bassman copies) by harp amp builders. This thing is the dog's bollocks.

SW

PS. I've even played it with my Tele and it sounds great for guitar. Who'd have thought?

Some factories in China took a liking to making Gibson knockoffs recently. They used to try to sell them via Ebay until Ebay got wise and started killing the auctions. They do come up still sometimes. Most of them say Gibson on the headstock but they're models and options and colors etc. that you would never see on a real Gibbo.

Sorry, I dropped a 3 on the part number - 4AB3C1B. Accutronics will also build them to suit on ebay, so if you don't want a long delay (decay), you could order a custom built one with medium delay which would be 4AB3C1B. Here's the ebay link (otherwise buy from AES, mojo or Weber):

Here's another one (told to me by the guy applying for the job):

Record company guy: So why do you want to work for MCA?

Guy applying for the job: Well, I really like music.

Record company guy: Hmmm, that could turn out to be a problem....

Chris,
why not gut one of those Strats and stick 2 or 3 P90's in it?

kenny i want to try some thing different than my strats which i love and the big hollowbody's my playing! i just dont to spend over 2 grand in doing it!

Kind of like this? Reverend Jetstream 390. List for $779.00 <$600 new on eBay. Great P-90 strat alternative. Great quality build, killer tone, for the money it's a great value.

Looking at the white Tele on the first link I'm not even sure if it's really a Fender at all.

My thoughts exactly on the Gibsons. Counterfeits? If it's too good to be true...?

Ricky,
Looks like it was a fun show. I was visiting back East a few years ago and met up with Jon R at some jam near Brockton. Danny must've been about 10 or 11 then. First time seeing him play. We did a couple of numbers and I was impressed that he was the only drummer that night who could play a simple shuffle.
Who's the harp player in the video?

Thanks,
Harold

My Kendrick model 1000 reverb tank (6G15 clone) has been very noisy lately, and I have localized the problem to be a bad no-name 12AT7 tube.

I have replaced it with a Mullard 12AX7. The crackeling noise is gone and the sound is altered a bit. Sounds like the reverb is driven a bit harder. Also, now the reverb tank seems to boost/beef up the signal a little bit, whereas it was unity gain at most with the 12AT7.

1. Is is harmfull for the reverb tank to use a 12AX7 instead of 12AT7?

2. Is the difference I hear in sound a consequence of the AT7 -> AX7 substitution, or could it be mainly because the one is an expensive Mullard and the other one being some el cheapo no-name tube? I am wondering if I should get a quality 12AT7 tube to test against the Mullard 12AX7.

3. What is your experience with 12AT7 vs. 12AX7 in 6G15 reverbs, soundwise and also regearding noise. And what do you prefere?

Lots of questions but I hope you will help me out. Thanks for an exiting thread with lots and lots of great information.

If you look at these spec sheets, about half way down the first page you'll see under maximum ratings that the AT7 will dissipate about twice the heat (wattage) that an AX7 will. It's possible that a 12AX7 won't last as long in that position.
A 12AX7 also has more gain than an AT7 so you'll drive the pan harder and maybe add some weird distortion.
Good N.O.S. 12AT7's aren't unreasonably priced yet. A N.O.S. Mullard CV4024/12AT7 can be had for less than $30 and may never need replacing.

It's funny really, but that Dano has almost p-90 kinda tone.
The tone caps don't do nothing, but I dont want to change anything.
It also has a biggish neck... my desert island guitar.

George,

Welcome back. That amp sounds like a killer. I had a Vicky Pro with a Weber P15N that was my go to amp for 7 years. Loved it. Yours has considerably more tweaking. Makin' my mouth water just thinkin' about it. Just installed a Scumback M75 ("Greenback") in my Louis Tremblelux and I think I've found tone nirvana...for now anyway LOL!! I had a Scumback H75 that I liked a lot but Lou kept telling me to try a Greenback. So, I started with a stock Chinese made Celestion Greenback that I liked slightly better than the H75. I kept reading such positive comments on the Scumback M75 I decided to try it and I like it slightly better than the stock Greenback. All the differences are relatively subtle and boil down to style of tone more than quality of tone.
I'm waiting to get my Louis KR-10/12 cab back from Lou to install a 12" Scumback "Scumnico" and the new Scumback M10 (10" version of the M75). So far the Scumbacks are my #1 choice, however, after all the experimenting I've done with speakers in the last few months I'm a little surprised at just how good the stock Chinese made Celestions sound. Ted Weber still makes killer speakers too. And now I'm reading great comments on the Warehouse WGS (?) speakers...and Austin Speakers (?)...just too many good stuffs out there. I'll bet that vintage P15N will sound fabulous.
P.S. Tell Lou to get my cab shipped pronto if you see him. Another P.S. Did Anson get hold of you? Thanks George.

Rick, - What year is the Dano? I have a first year '56 and it also has a rather large neck for a Dano/Silvertone. I always wondered if certain years had larger necks then others.

I believe it to be '57, real chunky for Dano...

I'm pretty sure John Marx plays a Dano on William Clarke's Live in Germany. At least that's what I remember he told me. He has a Jerry Jones now that he plays out sometimes, and Jones started I think right around 1988, which was when the album was recorded, but I think it's a Dano on that record.

Ricky, those vids sounds fantastic, you can swing my friend. That dano sounds fantastic, sort of stratotonish, but not quite so fat and over the top, I really liked it.

Just picked up a '68 "long-neck" ES-330, and am so happy with this guitar it makes me want to kick myself for having tried so many other guitars instead of just going out and picking up another 330. I had one I sold back in '94 to buy my ticket down to Buenos Aires, a beautiful cherry '65, and have always regretted it. Now I have one again, and this time it aint going nowhere!

http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p173/rygalli/P1020249-1-1.jpg

I have also realized that narrow nuts (9 1/16) don't bother me at all as the neck has some depth. This has the skinny nut, but is really fat, especially up the neck. It feels perfect to my hands, really, really comfortable.

I do have one problem with it that maybe someone here can help me with. Like all old 330's I have played, the neck pup is huge sounding, with tons of everything, and the bridge pickup sound nice, but is far to weak compared to the neck. On this model in particular, with its long neck, the neck pup is closer to the top of the guitar, and the fretboard, and has even more low end than a normal model. I am sort of one the fence between
