View Full Version : Cathode resistor...

Looks like I have a fubar cathode resistor in my amp which is preventing me from checking the bias correctly. I require a 10 ohm, 3 watt resistor as replacement. Where exactly do you find these suitable for this application? Are we talking Radio Shack or is there somewhere on line they can be had? I've tried a bit of googling, but I figured I'd get the straight story here.

Thanks.

10 ohms seems low, but you didn't mention what amp it was.

www.mouser.com (http://www.mouser.com) has almost every conceivable type of resistor.

Thanks mate.

Boy I've spent a lot of time in the tech forum recently, and you keep popping up! Thanks for all the help!

It's my Fuchs. Andy gave me the skinny on how to set the bias, but pin 8 on one of the tubes has an absurdly high voltage reading, which probably means the cathode resistor is shot. It has four 10-ohm, 3-watt resistors (one on each power tube), I believe, which may explain the low value.

I may take this in to be done, actually. We're approaching the point where I'm likely to cook my hair off if I bump the wrong thing with my soldering iron. The back of the standby switch already woke me up once this weekend.

Radio shack has 5-watters in stock I think. It's not a bad value, for measuring bias, we actually switched to 1-ohms (less power loss) a little while back, but 10 ohms means the voltage reads in something easily correlated to current: .300 volts (300 millivolts)= 30 MA and so on. .360 = 36 ma etc. With a 1-ohm, you would read .036 volts (36 millivolts), which is fine, but if your using an anlogue meter, your s.o.l. .
