sounds great as usual ! BUT - ever since i saw JM's performance on the Crossroads Festival DVD , where he played his strat and had this just wonderful clean neck-pickup tone ( fat but hollow... ) i want to hear that again , with a JM strat ! i have a Fuchs also and play a Suhr "Nashville" tele with trem and BPSSC system amongst other guitars but i have not been able to cop that particular John Mayer tone ... it must be the special pickups they put in these guitars with the scooped midrange - and his fine playing of course ! what is your take on the clean tone of that guitar ? could you post a clip , going through your Fuchs ? thanks !

Thanks for checking out. You mean... you saw it from dvd?
Last song from 1st disk? Could you tell me which part? John has slightly
overdriven sound.... That guitar was the SRV strat tight? Amps...
He goes Fender Vibro King and Two Rock(2 of them). He likes big sound
I think. I will try some clean clip. Fuchs sounds so good with my JM strat.

If it's crossroads he's talking about, that tone was all the VK and the Artist Sig's. I think he snuck a little of that dumble clean in at that show. That little breakup when he gets into it makes my toes curl!!!

Lets get a rundown:

1996 SRV Strat (he just slapped that shell guard on it)
TS808 (a nine wont work as well)
Keeley Katana Boost (thats the nice cut them notes have)
Maybe a splash of that Way Huge Aqua Puss Reverb
Fender Vibroking (is this a Vibrolux in a 310 + the 212?)
Two Rock Artist Custom Reverb Signature(s)
Two Rock 215 cab(s) (can anyone verify this???)

The Maybe's:

That Dumble ODS head he's been using lately
Proto Mayer Sig Strat
That Blackface SuperVerb he's always raving about

This is the gearpage isnt it?

Fender Vibro King plus 2 12 cab? and Two Rock. I just made a few clean...
with Fuchs 50 and Bob Burt/Tomo one 12 w/ Tonespotter. Totally clean.

I think you will like John Mayer strat. Bassy than my SRV strat.
John played his SRV strat at fest dvd. but I am not sure that the SRV had
original pickups or not. Anyone?

I noticed he stepped on some pedal? from intro groove where he had
overdriven tone to go clean... Did you notice?

Fun to watch him talk while he grooves. Very cool!

So do you and John ever get to jammin?

any way he'd jump on TGP?

haha, just to say hi of course...

His interview in GP this year totally inspired me.

"so if you're sitting in you're room on a friday night and its gunna be a practice night, get to it man, I'll see you up on stage here in ten years"

*Read by a shaggy haired, 15 year old kid sitting on his bed on a friday night, Strat in hand, listening to SRV play his heart out at Montreux*

Hi Jon,

I think he is talking about the Crossroad dvd... Now John is using his
signature strat full time on stages. He told me that Two Rock desinged
his signature amp and more... He will show me his rig in Boston.

Thanks for your input.

I think the JM strat got pretty big sound from those pickups.
This clip ... with CJOD for overdrive sound.

Check out my review ....

Yeah John is using the SRV Sig Strat, but his pickups were wound funny from the factory and they give him a certain tone that SRV Texas Specials don't usually have. His "big dipper" pickups on the JM Strat are modeled after that tone.

Using heavier strings also helps getting close to John's tone, the pickups and thicker strings gets you this round tone thats really cool!

Thanks for sharing. I didn't know that. but John explained me about his sig's pickups. Pretty hot. He is using his sig strat full time now. I will check out his new gear soon. Thanks again.

Hi Jon,

I went to his concert on Tuesday. It was a great show! Great seats on front.... It was John played several strats. He was using his Dumble in middle and 2 Two Rock signature (as clean amp). When he played "Gravitiy" it was beautiful clean to scream tone. I really enjoyed it. Glad to hear that John inspired you to play your guitar. That's really wondetful thing.

I just went to see John on Friday at Darien Lake...man it was awesome. I'd love to meet the guy some day. By far he's my favorite artist these days. He's got amazing feel and touch and he's a great writer. Not to mention his tone is to die for. Here I go back to practicing!

Thanks for sharing. I also went to see John's concert in Boston 8/29.

He is a great song writer, great guitar player. Great to hear that a lot of people are into his music. My wife loves John too! He played Neon that night just his guitar and singing. That's really hard to do singing and playing same time. I was very impressed by his performance the other day.

Practice, practice and practice your tone. Feel your music, you can do it!

PS, I was just playing my JM strat with my Fuchs and Bob Burt's One 12. It was a huge fun! I got BB's One 15" too. It sounded great! (Legend 15)

Tomo, any chance you could tab/write out the lick you play over the V chord right before the turnaround?

I've been trying to figure out a standard blues V chord lick like from your recording and some of John's blues shows as well but haven't been able to nail it just yet.

Thanks in advance!

Thank you so much for your kind words. I recorded this so quick after I received my JM strat from JM. John was very happy to hear that I really like the JM strat.

Thank you so asking about lesson. Currently I only teach my correspondence lessons and all full. I don't teach anyone right now. but if you wanna take one off lesson... maybe a chance? Email me. I will add you on the list.

Thanks,

Hi Chris,

Those are not that hard. I borrowed from SRV.... he borrowed from T Bone Walker... Go back to T Bone Walker. Get "T-Bone blues" cd. You will hear these phrase. I can't write out tab but here is similar blues etude and tab/music. So you can learn it.

I think you should go back a few steps back to traditional blues... do copy by your ear.

Enjoy it!

Thanks Tomo!!!

I knew they were straight SRV licks and of course SRV was borrowing from his blues heroes.

I am actually in total agreement with you, next week im starting my "new lick a day" exercises, in which I will be doing just that. Learning a new blues lick every day and then building on each one to add them into my bag of tricks.

Thanks again Tomo, as always YOU DA MAN!

You're welcome! Listen to good old blues records. Be a good listener before your playing. Learning licks is good but .... make efforts to put music into you first then music will come out from you. Don't learn fast! Slowly and deeply. You just need a few licks and a lot of expression and good tone.

If you hadn't have said I would have thought you were using some kind of Tweed! Nice to hear a raw sound from the Fuchs......

Best, Pete.

Hi Pete,

Well, I was just playing blues... but I usually have some imagination toward sound/tone, style...so I heard like that? Thanks for listening. Fuchs 50 is great amp. I love it! Bob Burt cab makes great tone too. How's your daughter? Playing together? My older son (13) just started playing his guitar.

Tomo,
Yeah - she's also taken up the Flute this year - I've been doing my best Ian Anderson impressions - you know standing on one leg, etc.

To be honest I get a little tired of those smooth, jazzy tones out of Fuchs, I know that they are capable of much more. It's great to hear them, mate!

Getting a new Chapin, 'Houla with interesting specs in about a month.

Best, Pete.

Hi Pete,

Great to hear that your daughter's doing music. It's good for her! You're great daddy! My daughter is still doing dance and now I practice with her tap teacher every Thursdays. It's challenging and fun.

That's ok. It's all player's touch too. Hope more rock guys will play the Fuchs. I recorded my Fuchs 50 and Train 45 together for my new cd. I like a bit edgy... JM strat clip was my Fuchs 50 (clean) and my CJOD pedal. Now I am using BJF's "R" pedal ...this pedal is more edgy... I really enjoy it.

Say hello to Bill, I haven't talk to him for a while. New Chapin's 'Houla!!! Let me see the pic when you have.

Take care,

Tomo

Thank you so much for your kind words. I really wish I can play much smoother
and neat. I practiced friday afternoon.... mostly playing tunes in my mind... I still feel my picking /timing could be better like sax player or singer... that I am after ... Thanks again for your comment. I am gonna do listening session now.
