My new '59 Tweed Deluxe has (3) large blue Sprague TVA 1906 Filter Caps. I've since learned this model number are the 20uf Caps--too large for this amp. These are 20mfd/450 volt caps and someone pointed out they should be the smaller 16mfd/450 volts caps.

"It'll make a big difference in tone if it has the right caps".
--what tone change should I expect?

Everything sounds just right I hate to change anything! But I'm gonna take the amp in for a 3-prong cord, should I also change the caps?

Here's a pic of the back, and a link to my lilypix gallery where you can also click on pic to enlarge it for detail:

Mudslide,I don't think a 4uf of filtering is going to make an audible difference. Are the 20uf's 450 or 500. Most of the sprague's I've seen are 500. It's better to have the extra voltage rating. I have 16uf@475 in my deluxe. When warming up the voltage exceed's the 475 by about 15 volts or so,until the tubes draw some current, bringing it down to about 350.

Thanks, slider.

Other info I can mention is that my amp was checked over by a tech at the shop where I bought it, and as is there fashion included black and white photocopies of the insides. They usually circle any areas that they change--nothing was circled indicating the amp checked out fine and nothing replaced by the tech.

No telling of course how long the caps had been in there (or anything else) by the previous owner.

Sprague TVA1906 is a 500v cap and as Slider said ...4uf isn't going to be much of a difference...enjoy your tweed.
