View Full Version : Who Made Slash's Original Custom Les Paul?

I remember a long time ago reading an article that said that Slash's favorite LP wasn't made by Gibson, but by a custom luthier that passed away. Anyone who that was and if it's possible to get another guitar like that?
Thanks!

I know there was a great thread here on TGP about that.
I may have saved it, I'll try and locate it.
Or you may want to try an advanced search here on the board.
Edited to add:
Here is the thread I was thinking of:

It's hard to believe that AFD is 20 years old next year. Same year I graduated high school....yikes!

REALLY??? WOW......
Yeah, Great player IMO, I was WAY into GnR when they came out (8th grade) Saved up, bought a Les Paul, and eventually a Marshall.
I believe at one point in time I could play at least all the rhythm tracks on appetite. LOL Been a LONG time since I played that stuff!

And it still rips like no other album. :AOK
It's still so dirty and menacing, and I reckon it would probably still kill if it came out today. Welcome To The Jungle just tears up it so hard :dude

Have you ever listened to just the left channel on those tracks - especially Paradise City? I think that was Izzy on that channel. Its killer rhythm work.

Yeah, good stuff.
Wish Izzy would've kept it together for UYI 1&2. Slash had to redo most of Izzy's parts.

Yeah Izzy is on the left and Slash is on the right, except in the solos where he's usually in the center.
Those guys are the reason I picked up guitar in the first place. AFD was a perfect blend of classic rock type of stuff like AC/DC + Aerosmith and punk rock like Dead Boys + New York Dolls.

How Slash plays with his guitar so low, I'll never know.
I play with mine fairly high up.
Guess I'll never be that cool... :(

Slash wears it high compared to old Jimmy Page. Them there are 2 of my favorite guitar players.:AOK Jimmy rates #1, but Slash is in the top #5.
Like anyone really cared.:NUTS

I've seen Slash live many times. Usually he'll yank his guitar up closer to his chest for faster solos like this:

I can't see the picture.
This is a very cool thread. About how many LP did Chris Derrig make?

When I was a wee guitarist, I tried to look like Page, but I couldn't even play barre chords that low, much less any lead work. Maybe that's why I never made it...

One of our fellow TGP'ers has an amazing derrig. He actually told me it was a real burst at first and I believed him. It sounds incredible. Amazing guitars. I have never seen one for sale.

Not according to the studio engineers. Wasn't there some thread about how the producer brought in studio players after the band left?

I've heard people say that Mike Landau cut all of the tracks on Appetite, but I have no idea if there's any truth to it at all. I've also heard that Trevor Rabin cut all of the tracks on Def Leppard's Pyromania, but again I have no idea if that's true either.

Yeah, Landau... that's what I was told. But it could have been a number of guys.
In my end of the business it's routine to send the band home for the day and then spend eight more hours "cleaning up" tracks (read: overdubbing or manipulating in pro tools) because a freshman band can't play well enough for the studio yet. There are so many great session guys who can cop someones feel and tone in an instant in the studio... this is their job. We use 'em all the time.
Funny thing is, the band comes back the next day and says "man, I really nailed that." True stories from a sick world.

Anyone got anymore info about the mysterious Max Les Pauls? I heard they are the original *better than 57* repro Les Pauls, made in LA in the late 70s - any more info??

Page didn't play 6th string root barre chords, he used a "thumb over" style for the same chord, Hendrix did too. Page would not have been able to pull those off otherwise.

But I'm still surprised he could manage to play at all with such a low hanging guit.

Im prety sur ethat slash and izzy played the tracks. On eis on one side and th eother is on the opposite side. If you pan it to either side you can hear it.
I remember a friend telling me he had a stereo with only izzys side playing. It was so sloppy he thought to himself,"hey I can do that" it was an epiphany. ......lol. Turned out to be a great musician

Derrig LP's are definitely solid unobtaineum. Glad I got my "replica" when I did. Though not a Derrig it was handbuilt by a world class luthier and those models are becoming scarce.

Me too.
I remember buying my first LP in 1990. First of all, all the local shops had nothing used and the only choice you had was buy new. Think a black LP Standard went for around $1300 new w/case. I was in 3rd year university and couldn't shell out the dough. Also, there was this weird thing going on where some shops couldn't sell both Fender and Gibson; had to be either or. Anyway, I resorted to scouring this weekly 2nd hand goods newspaper called the 'Buy & Sell' for guitars, amps, etc. It was a ritual I performed every Friday when the paper was sold at the corner store. I remember that all the LP's would get scooped up quick because Slash made them popular again. I ended up getting a dead mint 1986 black standard, with an ebony fretboard (I asked Walter Carter about it and he said that they did that sometimes or that it could have been a custom order), a 70's MXR Distortion+, a Sola Sound wah & a guitar stand all for $650. My 2nd LP is Clinic '59 replica with old hardware that cost $3000 and is a dream in every which way.
Like you, I am very glad I picked up those guitars when I did. Funny thing is that I like the fact that my '59 is a replica and not a Historic. Guess it's because I like the history behind my replica (where is was made, knowing some of the people who made it, Gibson giving the shop a cease & desist order, etc). I also lucked into getting it as well. Waited a long time and had a good friend keep his eye open. I still remember getting that phone call, "Hey, you still looking for a '59 replica......."

Speaking of replica Les Pauls, are there really any "good" kits out there? Not bolt on, the real deal. Building your own strat isn't really a difficult proposition.

I *might* have an opportunity to buy a Derig that I have played numerous times. It belongs to a close friend and he might sell it. I know it won't be cheap and I think he is probably thinking of a MAX type figure. This guitar is really special no other LP I have played comes close to it. Does anyone have any idea what it would be worth?
