I forgot the name of the device (phonoscope, maybe?) that displays information about the sound frequency spectrum of a recording. Is there some device one can insert into the signal line to monitor frequency amplitudes? I have a digital recorder, but it doesn't display the sound frequency spectrum on playback like computer software can.

The device is a spectrum analyzer. Good ones that provide a detailed image of the spectrum are expensive. I have a rack mount DOD unit that works okay, but it only offers a resolution of 1 or 3 decibals. I paid around $150 for it.

If it's for recording/mixing and you already have a windows based DAW, try Spectrogram (http://www.visualizationsoftware.com/gram/gramdl.html). Cheap, like $20 or so.
Never mind. I should read fully before hitting the reply button!

Where'd you get it?

Wavelab has a lot of varied and good options, too.
Nice as a reference point, but the ear reigns supreme.

NuGen Audio has a free beta version of their Visualizer. Might be just what you're looking for.
