Maybe its me, but I cant find CDaughtry's thread about new Gustavsson guitars anymore. In it Matte had a few new toys with humbucking Charlie Christian pickups.

Any word on Dom. Ramos and the sonic details of such oddball electronics would be much appreciated.

PS: How do normal Charlie Christians sound under high(er) gain conditions?

thanks,
-homebrewer

Some ugly things went down in a pissing war on that thread; I'd PM or email Matte about your questions.

dominick ramos has been building exact repros of charlie christians for some time now. i wanted to replace the pickups in the korina jg with something more open than humbuckers and i wanted them to be noiseless. who better than dom to address that?

we went with the cc platform with a few tweaks (like stacked coils and rod magnets for the bridge pickup. he replaced the middle pickup on my mahogany bruisemonster with a similar pickup as well.

Matte-

Those Ramos pickups are incredible!

How do they compare to the old Gibson Alnico V pickup? You mentioned a 7 string Duncan Custom Shop version a while back. These stacked CC's seem like they would have similar "meat with clarity" tone but with less noise.

Thanks for the details. Your quest for unique gear is fun (and educational) to observe via TGP.

And now I hate Matte, too...

Seriously, though, that is the most beautiful LP-style guitar I have ever seen, and I've seen quite a few.

I think I'll have to count up all my MIJ Fenders and parts guitars and unused pedals and excess pickups to see if I can swing one of these...look out for a TGP yard sale if I can make it work!

I hate this thread. Usually hyped amps and guitars are a huge letdown. Not this time.

However, I'm not shelling out $8.5 K even though JG's are flat out amazing!!

this thread officially sux!

what kinda place IS this?

first I find out people are pissing on threads.

doesn't that get the computer all wet and cause short circuits ? how dumb is THAT?

I prefer pissing in toilets, and no matter WHAT someone's issues might be ... I might goof on them unmercifully IF I knew them ... but since this is ALL virtual here ...I prefer to treat them honorably and not piss on them . ... well ... OK ... MAYBE I'd piss on Sadaam Hussein .. probably not though.
Ed Roman ... no .. not him either. let's see .. Rush Limbeau .. MAYBE!! :D:D

secondly - as far as these gustavsson's - where's all the deleted pix ??... can someone repost them - WHAT am I suppose to be drooling on here?

thirdly - this place is starting to make me feel VERY low rent - I think I'm insane for having $9K holed up in THREE of my guitars (that's enough for a house downpayment!) ... and some of you guys have that holed up in ONE guitar?

I am an official low caste slum lord. :jo

please repost the pix ... :munch

usually matte removes older pics to put up newer ones. the links eventually die. if you request a specific shot of one of mattes guitars, he will usually post it. im still hoping he re-posts the shots of his friend dr know's bolt on JG

Hi guys,

Sorry to resurrect this old thread.

Could someone please post (re-post) Dominick Ramos' current contact details? I could not find his entry in the mandolin makers' list provided a few postings above.

Thanks very much in advance!

Last I heard, he was being represented by Cliff at Destroy All Guitars. I contacted him about some pickups (they were in pre-production mode then) but I didn't hear back and have since sold the guitar.

But I'd start by contacting Cliff @ DAG.

I am thrilled to now own Matte's 6 string Gustavsson with Dom's CC pups and can tell you that it is the singularly best sounding guitar I've ever had in my hands, vintage or modern. Brilliant clarity, sparkle, definition, robust clear lows, present mids that are never muddy and not as forward as on most hb pups. This particular instrument has a Demeter mid-boost installed as well. I wasn't sure whether or not I was happy about that when I discovered it. However, it took very little time to realize that it is a perfect match for these pups. Push the bridge tone pot to engage and use the upper volume knob to dial in the precise amount of mid boost (the taper is so good that every miniscule turn of the knob offers an audible change) and it totally changes the character of the pups to thick screaming mids that again, are never choked just much more emphasized and forward. All while retaining the upper sparkle and deep low end. Absolutely magical. I've been using this a lot lately and it always draws effusive comments on the tone especially from experienced players. It sounds completely different than my JG with Wolftones. I have to admit that I prefer it due to the complexity of the pickups but that takes nothing away from my first Gus with "plain old humbuckings". It is definitely worth the effort to contact Mr Ramos.
Let us know what you discover.

pics? Just curious how that setup looks. Was it originally routed for HBs?

Narad. my guess is that it was originally routed for HB's. Sorry, I haven't uploaded much of anything to my photobucket acct, so I can't post them in thread. PM me.
Where are you in MA? We might be able to hook up if you want to check it out. Also, send me your email and I can attach pics. imho, it looks freaking amazing, lol.
As Matte stated, the bridge pup has rod magnets and the neck pup has a bar strip.
