I have a little homebrew amp that currently uses 3 12AX7's and two 6V6GTs and was wondering what would happen if I swapped out the 6V6's for a couple of 6550's. I'm going after more gain.

Will the thing blow up?

Thanks

it likely wont blow up, but is sure as heck isnt gonna give you any more "gain". A 6V6 circuit wont come close to driving a 6550 for spit.

I think this would probably have the opposite effect. If it works, you'll probably have more headroom not less. What kind of circuit is the amp using? You might be able to boost the gain by tweaking the circuit.

You'll be asking the power transformer to provide an extra 2.3 amps of heater current. Unless it was designed to power a pair of EL34s or 6550s, you'll likely burn it up.
