View Full Version : Suhr owners--chime in. I'm on the edge.

I'm on the edge of springing for a beautiful sunburst Classic T. Swamp ash, Indian rosewood board, and a 3 pickup configuration. 2 V60's and a Broadcaster in the bridge. Like how it plays. Like how it sounds.
Couple of questions:
Would I be better off with the V60LP's for this type of guitar?
Also---am I going to wish I'd gotten the SSC system in a strat type set up such as this?
I'd always gotten Andersons to satisfy my "high end" urges. But after reading so much about Suhrs and finally getting to play some------I'd like to try one.
I'm very close to pulling the trigger here. Any words of wisdom would be much appreciated. Thanks.

The best words of wisdom are your own: "Like how it plays. Like how it sounds."
Every guitar is an individual. If you found one that is really speaking to you, grab it, don't think twice about it.

if you connect with it, get it... those are hard to find.... as for the SSC system, I've heard great things, my classic S doesnt have it... but I must say its so darn quiet anyhow, I dont see it doing much.... but people swear by it....

Suhrs are wonderful guitars. I have the SSC on both of mine. I need it for the quiet venues I play in. It is expensive, espcially on a Tele where you must get a top to have it.
The guitar you describe sounds like it would have a good deal of high end, but if that is what you like, get it.
SSC is awesome on my swamp ash classic. Nothing plays (or sounds) like a Suhr IMO. If the price is right, go for it. Otherwise, just order your dream guitar. You'd be surprised at how reasonably priced they are!

I'd say dont do it, you fingers will only get tired from playing it constantly because you will have a hard time putting it down.

I'm with AJ. I recently sprung for my Suhr- and when I found it, I did everything possible to get it. I'm incredibly happy with it and I knew without any doubt that I would be kicking myself hard for the rest of my life if I let it go. I'm not a collector and don't go shopping every week. But when it's time for a new guitar, it is generally pretty rare to find one that totally "fits." So when you do, grab it! Even if I let this one go thinking I could ask for the same specs later (knowing how consistent Suhr, Anderson, Taylor, etc. are) it would've been different- comfort, flame pattern, weight, whatever.
Things like pickups and/or the SSC that can be done aftermarket shouldn't keep you from anything. Actually, this one will save you some dough if you try it as is and realize you can get by without any changes at all. 60-cycle hum sure doesn't keep me from playing, and when it's particularly bad at a venue, I know what to do to eliminate it between songs when I need to. A few hundred dollars isn't worth the occasional flip of my pickup selector or turning off my dirt box in between songs. Nice concept, if this one had it I wouldn't have passed on it, but I don't NEED it by any means.

What about the pickups? Would V60LP's be an advantage in this guitar?
This is a new guitar but I believe it's from 2004. I could be wrong, but I don't think the SCC system was available at that time. Heck-----I'm not going to worry about that. Single coil hum is nothing new, right?
I would really like to add a piezo bridge to it but I'm not sure where Fishman is on that right now. I've heard they've stopped making them.
Thanks for the help. Keep it coming!

I have two Suhrs. A Classic, one piece SA body and one piece maple neck with with the V60LP's and a Classic T spec'ed like a vintage Tele. One piece SA body and one piece maple neck with standard pickup config.
The Classic T is the best guitar I have ever owned. That's my testimony.

Exactly. Suhr Guitars are very consistent, and with their design specs and building techniques including the PLEK system for frets they are probably more consistent than most other builders, but there will still be slight variances in every guitar in terms of feel and tone. No 2 guitars anywhere are exactly the same

You didn't say which bridge this guitar has... is BPSSC an option? Much cheaper than a factory installed SSC system, albeit slightly less effective. They are also rumored to be coming out with a pickguard version of the SSC for their T-style guitars.
I'm a huge fan of the SSC system, but it's helpful to remember that some of the best recordings of the past 50 years were made with single coils humming like crazy. If it was good enough for Hendrix and SRV, then perhaps it's good enough...
As for pickups, 60s and V60LPs sound different but both are great. If you like the guitar as-is... BUY IT and play it PROUD! :D

Could you elaborate on the differences in sound of those two pickups.
I know "sounds" are hard to describe but..................might be helpful.
Thanks.

One piece lightweight swamp ash body. African rosewood board. V60's in neck and middle; Broadcaster in Bridge. Wouldn't change a thing. Spectacularly resonant guitar - exactly as I spec'd it out.
The V60's with the Broadcaster pickup give a great, edgy, in-your-face snarl. I also have a 5-way switch, with a push-pull tone pot that allows me to add the bridge pickup to any of the configurations at any time.

Thanks. The differences are pretty well documented on this and other forums, but my summary is that (IMHO) the V60LPs are a little richer in the lower mids whereas the V60s are a touch more modern sounding, particuarly in the upper register.

That's a beautiful guitar Teleplayer. The one I'm looking at is much like it except for the bridge. It has the 1055 , which is basically like the ones I'm used to on my Andersons.
Thanks for the pic and comments. I'm getting closer to the edge.

Fred,
I thought I was all set in terms of Teles, until seeing this.
You know where to find me if you ever decide to purge a Suhr once again.

I'm also thinking about ordering a Suhr Classic T. It's because I'm so happy with how my Classic turned out, I love the V60LPs, the SSC and the neck shape I specified so I want the same guitar but as a Tele with a traditional 3 saddle tele bridge 2 V60LPs and a tele pickup in the bridge. I'd say that if you are going to get a Suhr anyway, go ahead and get the SSC system, it is absolutely worth it.

Oh man!!!!!!!
Was just on Anderson's site and sounds like they're coming out with a new pickup. Why would they do this to me NOW??????? Why? Why?
Actually----I'm still leaning hard towards the Suhr. (Ha)
I love this game, but sometimes......................................man ! Makes me wonder if I should just be happy with what I've got and practice, practice, practice.

I own fifteen guitars, three of them are Suhr Standards. Since receiving my Suhr's, I've completely stopped playing any of my other guitars, period. All these years, no matter how nice of a guitar I had, they never felt as like a part of me until the Suhr's. There's something to be said about having every bit of the guitar EXACTLY as you would want it to be.

There's lots of nice guitars out there, but I gotta say that the Suhr classics I've played are the most perfect guitars I've ever touched.
Go for it!
There is definitely a classic with the ssc system in my future.

I just received my first Suhr earlier this week and I haven't been able to put the damn thing down. It also helps that it's the lightest guitar I've ever owned even though it's a mahogany body & neck. Here's some shots Noel took at Tone Merchants before shipping it.

This has to be the most ergonomic guitar I've ever held. Every aspect of it is just heavenly. It has the BPSSC btw and it's dead quiet even on a cranked plexi. I've compared it with some of my older guitars and they seem even noiser now next to this. I guess I had a higher tolerance for that noise before hearing this Suhr. Now I'm spoiled, I need more Suhrs!!!

+1 However the only other guitar I play is a Les Paul.....since the Suhr boys haven't unvelied their 24.5" scale length set neck yet, I'll probably have the LP for some time.
Thank god its actually pleked! :RoCkIn
