I've been thinking about having this done to my 72 DR which I have had blackfaced. Has anyone done this? I realize that it would be best to get a drop in transformer to do this. I know David Allen makes them...and his seems little easier on the wallet then those made by Mercury magnetics (which i know are the gold standard. i was thinking of getting a transformer for a Vibrolux to drop in.

Now here's a stupid question....do you replace both the power and output transformers? What about a new choke?

Thanks for the help guys!

you don't need to replace any transformers.

You might have to replace one resistor in teh bias circuit. Just drop 'em in and bias 'em up and you should be fine. The OT in a BFDR is actually better suited to the 6L6 than the 6V6, oddly enough. I learned that in this very message board!

If you want to noticeably increase headroom, get the Dave Allen DR tranny set, and use the next larger choke up from the DR size (Dave will know which one). Raise the preamp voltages for more headroom and output by using a 1k and 4.7k in the power capacitor section instead of the stock 10k and 10k. Try a 100 ohm NFB resistor instead of the 47 ohm. You will get around 35 watts output power.
