well, I just got "Primeval Blues, Rags, and Gospel Songs" on the YaZoo label. Sounds like they did a stellar job remastering a bunch of his songs. His voice is more articulate and the guitar thumping sounds really clear. :)

I just love this guy. I had to warm up to Son House and Robert Johnson, but I immediately flipped when I heard Charley. He's RAW to the extreme.

If you're really into CP, check out the book "King of the Delta Blues". It's a facinating look at the life and times of CP and others in the delta, and the roots of the blues. The author gets a bit condescending and opinionated at times, plus overly academic. But if you skip over that and just read the history, it's pretty amazing.

is the fidelity/ clarity of these cd's substantially better than the yazoo releases "Founder of the delta blues" & "king of the delta blues"?

Charlie Patton Keys and positions

NOTE: With regards to the pitches Patton tunes to, it's been said he wasn't using a capo but tuned up one, two or several steps. With some of these songs, I can see how he might have gone through several guitars doing this. You might want to use a capo instead. :) For standard tuning songs, I tuned to standard pitch then slapped on a capo, so E + 1 means he played out of an E position pitched to F, and so on. For Spoonful I just cranked up a resonator guitar to Vestapol at E. For the tunes in Spanish, I tuned to open G and capoed to A, Bb, B, as needed, though you could easily get away with open A depending on your guitar. I'd tune it back down when you're done though. For the slide tunes, it's worth noting he's likely playing lap-style for most of them.

Yes! I compared "Primeval Blues, Rags, and Gospel Songs" to "Founder" and it's MUCH clearer. You can hear more of the string noise, guitar clanking, and it's easier to make out his words. I got it soley on the remastering ... I just hope they release some more of the same fidelity.
