I'm used to Yamaha products being consistently good quality for the money and one of the safest brands to buy sight unseen, but I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed with the sound, craftmanship and setup of this €450 guitar. It has no right to be so cheap! The nut is perfectly cut (a rare occurrence at this price point), the fret ends are smooth, the intonation is perfect, there are no dead spots, the bracing and general construction is super-neat and the semi-rigid case is THE thing I wish I had for all my guitars and basses. The 000 sized body is very comfortable and, I'm not an expert (this is my first acoustic), but I think the tone is wonderfully sweet. Well, it was about time I added an acoustic to my collection and I couldn't be happier! :AOK :AOK :AOK

Very nice! Yamaha makes some really good guitars. I've got a LLX-500 which is a cutaway dreadnought with piezio. It's a fine guitar, very well made and sounds good. I hope you enjoy your guitar, it looks great and that case is very cool.

How wide is the neck at the nut on this model?

How wide is the neck at the nut on this model?1-3/4". The scale length is 650 mm and I find the neck contour very comfortable (0.86" @ 1st fret, 0.97" @ 12th fret), I guess because it's very similar to a PRS wide fat, which is my favourite neck. The feel of the satin finish on the neck is also quite nice.

Thanks, couldn't find the spec's anywhere!

Sounds perfect - I have a Tele with a custom neck from Warmoth, 1-3/4" nut, 650mm scale, thin profile, this seems to be very similar, guess I gotta try and find one in a shop here.

Ein Dankeschön nach München!

Ein Dankeschön nach München!¡De nada! (I'm actually Spanish! :D)

Yamaha's web site doesn't have much info but I requested a catalogue before buying it, so here's the rest of the rundown in case it helps:

Top: Solid Engelmann spruce
Back & Sides: Laminated rosewood (the next model up in the range, the LS16, has solid back & sides)
Neck: Mahogany with rosewood strip
Fingerboard: Ebony
Bridge: Ebony
Body size (L/W): 497-380 mm (19 9/16" - 14 15/16")
Body depth: 100-120 mm (3 15/16" - 4 3/4")

I just measured the frets and they are about 0.080" (W) x 0.045" (H). Another interesting feature is a rosewood bridge plate, which I guess will be more durable than spruce.

BTW I just replaced the plastic saddle with a bone one as often recommended and it does makes a significant difference, it sounds clearer and more "organic".

I played and really fell in love with the Martin 000-28EC but it's not something I can afford :) The LS6 looks interesting and is kind of similar to EC (same size, width at nut, ebony fretboard) don't know about the neck contour though u-shape, c-shape? I'm going to research the LS6 further, it certainly seems to be a well crafted and nice looking guitar.

Congrats. I used to own an LS-16 and it was great. I traded up to a standard (Martin) dread because I prefer that body size.

I agree, that is a sweet looking guitar from Yamaha. How is the volume? Enough bottom end when finger-picking? And did you have to lower the action at all?
I'm looking at getting one of these for my back-up guitar, and a shop here has them currently on a pretty good sale.
Cheers,
Rod
