Did anyone see this? any opinions? Is this a good product to start messing around with recording, or should people spend a little more and get the normal Mbox 2?

A great entry level interface but you get a full pro tools LE the industry standard.

When you are ready you can then upgrade the interface to a console but there is all you need to get great results in the m-box mini package

"A full Pro Tools LE" sounds like an oxymoron...LE is a limited function version of Pro Tools HD in many ways.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'upgrading' from the interface to a console? The two aren't interchangeable. A console provides a preamp and eq, but it still needs to go into some sort of interface for recording.

Anyone else had some experience with this since the thread was started?

That's true - it's limited - but not by much. In fact there are VERY few differences between LE and HD and a few of those differences can be alleviated by purchasing LE software upgrades like DV Toolkit, etc. ProTools LE is nearly as "professional" as it gets, the limiting factor really being the hardware, with HD systems having much greater options (much more expensive, too).

I haven't used it personally but I have used the regular M-Box 2 and I think it's a great value. You should be able to make great recordings with that bundle.

Yes LE is a cut down version of the full HD system but as another reply says there are very few differences. My point is that you are getting the major funcionality of the most used software in the music industry and as said you can add on the DV toolkit or musicians kit to get even more functions.

You can also upgrade to a PT console such as the command 8 or 002 which will allow you up to 12 mic inputs in total with the addition of a behringer mic amp box.

the recent .3 release apparently narrows the gap. there is an article on audiomidi.com that details the differences.

if possible, or if you plan on doing 96khz, consider the mbox pro with firewire. It's $700 today, which means it will be < $500 by spring.

Keep in mind that Command 8 doesn't add inputs - it's just a controller.

I have the MBox2 Pro. It has some great sounding preamps. So far it's performed flawlessly with my PC. It came with Pro Tools LE. But IMO, Pro Tools LE is a joke compared to Cakewalk Sonar 6. After being a long time Cakewalk user I gave LE a chance and open mind to try something new. But LE has so many quirks. It takes forever to load, your limited to the amount of audio tracks you can record without paying more to the man, and has so many less features and onboard tools than Sonar. But now...... Pro Tools systems are awesome if you can afford 15k + for their "real" studio systems and software. Well, maybe one day. The Mbox2 Pro just recently replaced my several year old Echo Audio Darla 24bit card/breakout box and I'm very happy.
