View Full Version : m-audio guitarbox (black box)
how is this thing for just a drum box, or for the "beat timed" effects for jamming along with, then outputting not to PTLE but to a mixing board?

how is this thing for just a drum box, or for the "beat timed" effects for jamming along with, then outputting not to PTLE but to a mixing board?I don't spend any time in this part of TGP because I'm a total idiot when it comes to computers & still use audio tape:eek: to record..
But, I did post a question here regarding Abelton 'lite for Gtr' recording software that comes bundled w/the Black Box some months back which sank into oblivion w/o a single response. Couldn't load it onto this old clunker anyway, so I kinda forgot about it.
I've have the original BlackBox and it's a pretty cool machine.. I really wanted an AdrenaLinn2, but nobody carries them up here (Canada) and the BB was a lot cheaper, too.
Don't know how much the product's evolved since I got mine (still haven't loaded the upgrade w/added midrange controls for the amp sims) but the 99 drum patterns on mine cannot be edited, just the effects they're synched with. Mine also came w/a CD loaded w/a ton of real drum samples to be looped into the Alebton lite software. Great sounding beats, but I won't really be able to work w/'em till I get a new computer & sit down to read the manual.
I'd also like to know what else M-Audio's throwing in w/their BlackBox these days (guess I should have waited a few months before buying) so I'll be watching this thread w/great interest..Sorry I can't add more info.
so how are the drum beats inside the unit, decent? any sounds other than drums in there (bass, etc.)?
It appears that the basic black box is just now bundled with PTLE and some guitar plug-ins (for use w/ a computer) and sells for like $600 now, or with the PRO guitar pack, even more plug-ins (~$4000 worth?!) for $700.
But, it appears that the black box is still the same 2 channel, 1 mic, 1 line, USB 1.1, 24-bit 48khz. You can possibly upload your firmware to the latest at the maudio site, I think in the interim they marketed the upgraded firmware version as black box "reloaded" and still stand alone without the PTLE and plug-in bundles for $199.
Until Dec., you can upgrade a stand-alone black box to a guitarbox or guitarbox pro package for $300 to $400, I guess the value is how much you would use the PTLE and/or plug-ins.
I'm basically wondering how it works stand-alone, maybe I should post in the effects forum?

For stand alone I think it's great for jamming. Although it sounds like pants through an amp. Computer only. Make sure you get the firmware update though
Thanks!
