Ok here goes the ingnorance meter. My son has my old G4 dual with garage band 2 on it what interface does he need to set up a mic to record with. Just raw stuff nothing fancy at the moment.

A Presonourus Firebox would get the job done. It is a firewire interface with two preamp inputs. You can probably pick one up used on e-bay for around $175. They are about $300 new.

On the raw stuff catagory an iMic from Griffin Technology is an option also for $40.00...or if the G4 has line-in, if you have a mixer laying around that will get you in also.

An old friend at the college came to me with the same situation...just somthign simple to record his son's trombone playing.
I suggested this....
