I have a big wooden cabinet in my studio space- I realized that the cupboard in the bottom would be big enough to hold a 1-12" cab... so I bought a Bogner Cube and loaded it with a Heritage G12H30... and buried it in there with some auralex foam to soak up bass and some packing blankets.. I have an SM 57 and a new CAD Trion 7000 ribbon mic in there... here's some photos:

I think it sounds great, and using my Komet attenuator to bring down the output of whatever amp I'm using a bit, I can get really good cranked tones and not bug the folks upstairs...
here's my 1st attempt at doing a clip with this setup. The hard panned guitars are my strat through a Top Hat Emplexador, and the lead parts are all my Les Paul through my RSA 31.. I was going for a sort of Neil Young meets Petty vibe.... lemme know what you think...

WOW !!
Stellar tones man....top shelf.
To consistently grab a tone that cool ?
I say you duct tape that cupboard shut,
well enough alone, a "go to" set up.
Tasty playing too !!!

That sounds really great! :dude I have been thinking about getting one since they came out but haven't heard any real reviews of them.
The guy at my local music store was pushing them pretty hard and was offering to let me borrow one to try out, but I haven't got around to doing so. I'll definitely have to stop by next week and take one for a test drive. The Christmas money is going to come in handy :)
I too am interested in your recording interface as I just started getting into recording this summer and am currently just using a Firepod.

ha- my interface is a Firebox! So you are more upscale than me. I think the Presonus stuff is great for the dough... I do have a nice pre (Universal 6176) but I'm using one of the Firebox pres for the 57...

Sounds killer. You were using the Komet attenuator on both amps? If so, how many clicks?

My question is along the same lines.
How much can the CAD take?(volume levels)Would 1 click on the Hot plate ,say 50 watt amp ,work?

down a few, actually.. the CAD will take like 140 Db I think so it's not an issue.. I really like the Komet and the issue is more that there's some weird vibrations in the piece of furniture if you hit certain notes or palm mute and if it's real loud.. and the CAD being figure 8 picks up some of that, so, I just attenuate til that calms down. It still sounds great, doesn't seem to matter... once you go one click on the Komet, 2 or 3 doesn't make any more difference in tone suckage, really... it sounds evenly good all the way down, maybe you lose some low mids down all the way, but it's still pretty good... I use it down 2 or 3 clicks usually at gigs, etc. with my Concorde, sounds just awesome and the level is perfect with a drummer.

also- it's a G12H30 in that cab, I dont want to blow it up, so I'm always going to attenyate a bit, unless it's the rsa 31 or my FTR37 on half power...

Love the clips! Really like all the great textures your getting. We have a few things in common, I recently received a few of the new mics from CAD to test drive. The Trion 7000, 8000 and an E-300. I'm also mixing the 7000 ribbon with a 57. I'd love to hear more of your comments on that mic. I've been thinking about purchasing a R-121 or AEA R84 but I'm getting better with the 7000. I also have a 6176! Great pre and compressor. Are you happy with the Bogner cube? I'm looking for a new cab for recording. I was thinking openback for sure until I heard your cube....THD or Avatar. Does the Bogner logo interfer with your micing technic on the cube?
Merry Christmas, Nick :]
sounds overly compressed to me, low dynamic range.

hey Nick, Merry xmas back!
The Bogner logo, ya, it's kind of weird, it's such a little cab, and I was thinking hmmm, should I remove this, it's sort of right in the sweet spot of where you want to shove a mic... I might just remove it. It's a real nice little cab, though, I think it's going to come in very handy. I do like the 6176 alot, great on vocals and acoustic guitar.. I want a Chandler Germanium mic pre next...

I've also got a Vintech X73I which I like a whole bunch. I hear ya on the Chandler. My next pre will be either that or the Great River. I just have to go on what I keep hearing about or reading about and those two are always popping up as great!
Is your Bogner 2x12 also a closeback? I've got to get a new recording cab and as I mentioned before, I'm thinking openback. Trying to get the volume down and keep from getting that boxy sound. For use with the Flexi, Univalve and AC30CC. I've had good success with the ac30 combo loaded with Red Fangs. So far all my recording has been 100 watters thru 4x12's, so going lower volume and smaller will be a new experience. Any thoughts on openback cabs?
Nick :]

Openback- good for airy cleans... not so good for thumping ("Marshally" crunchy) lows. I generally like closed back tones... I do love the sound of a Deluxe Reverb, or an AC-30, but Desert Island for me would be a greenback loaded vintage Marshall cab and great old Marshall head... so I'm always gravitating towards closed back cabs. I own 6 or 7 closed cabs, and one open back, so that sort of sums it up... I do love open cabs as the wet cabs in a w/d/w setup, I love how they spread the sound all over the stage... also, in a big band (like 2 guitars, keys, bass, drums) an open back amp can "cut" better and give you your piece of sonic real estate...
there's many cabs you can run either open or closed, with a removable back panel....

The Germanium is incredible for electric guitar.

Ancient Chinese Secret.......
no, I'll tell you...
it's a Randall MTS (Egnater modular design) RM4 preamp w/a Plexi module, into randall RT2/50 poweramp, into hotplate on load, line out into my interface/computer, and the speaker simulation is in NI Guitar Rig software- I tweaked it HARD until it sounded like VH1, or close, to me.
One of the ket things is- there's a TON of top end sizzle in that tone.

Too fast, too fast for love...:dude
I was going to mention that the cleans sound good, but the disto sounds kinda small. But then I read your post saying the exact same thing. Is the cab open back?
Have you ever tried the Randall Iso box? What are your thoughts on it if you have? I've read that some say it's great and some say it's weird with reflections.
