View Full Version : how large is your studio space? got any pics

im wondering what type of space everyone is working in. im buying a house soon (next few months) with my fiance and am planning on dedicating one room to guitar/computer use. ill definately be able to treat it acoustically and call it mine. im assuming it won't be huge, probably around 10x15 or so but im definately going to be glad to have my own space and start up my recording setup (get a few mics, preamp, and nice monitors.)
so, for all those that already have their stuff, what are you "living" with?

I just finished a new house with a dedicated studio. It's in the 12x15 range and has been perfect for my needs - wouldn't really need it any bigger as everything fits. No pics yet, but this is a good reason to take some.
I think you'll find it a good size for what you want to do.
One things that I've particularly enjoyed about the build-out is that fact that I could stretch the aesthetics and get nutty with the design because it is after all a room that's supposed to be inspiring.

I use 2 rooms upstairs and the stairwell for ambiance.
Downstairs for the piano and Hammond.

My current room is 12x12, but i think I will move this year into another
room which is 18x24.....Ideally I would like a seperate structure on the
same property my house is on..........
for those of you with 1 room. am i correct in assuming you track and monitor in the same room? are headphones used for this and monitors for playback?
for me......
yes and no, headphones for tracking when amp or mic is in room, but
Often I will put it outside the room, given the choice I would usually
prefer to listen thru monitors, I find ear fatigue sets in much faster
w/cans for one thing and mixing with them never works for me, though
checking the mix with them does point out things I don't always hear
in the monitors.............

It's relatively quiet in my room - quiet enough for moderately soft material - but I typically track live instruments in a different studio. I'll start writing at home and finish elsewhere. However, it's very possible to start and finish in this room. As you said - headphones for tracking and monitors for mixing. If you have a closet of decent size you could pad the interior and use that for tracking and it would be very quiet. I know a lot of people that work this way and the results can be impressive.

My project studio is a bog standard 12x14 "spare room" in our condo. Closet doors removed for both storage and less reflections. The room has more than enough room for desk, three computers, synthesizer, two LCDs, two 19" racks, five guitars, two amps, one speaker cabinet...and still room for a filing cabinet and a double-bed sized futon!
Tracking is done in the project studio itself, or out in any room in the condo best for ambiance.
I'd love to have a larger room, or a separate vocal/iso booth, but the room I have has worked rather well for some very nice sounding tracks.

Ive got two rooms. One with a bunch of guitars and pedals and amps, some keys and synths and all my computer stuff, interface, so on... Then in the other room (which is conected) there are two couches with pillows and foam and a drum set and piano, then whatever guitars or amps im tracking for whatever im doing. Im very happy with my setup, and im now upgraded to an intell powered powerbook.
Mine is 15x50, so its long and narrow. Works great. I have a DW kit, a Hammond C3 and a Leslie, an SWR bass rig, my amps, a Meyer sound system, Pro Tools, etc. I can somewhat islolate the guitars and drums with a curtain system and baffles.
We also can record our rehearsals, so that's a bonus.

My studio space is 30 X 40, plus an 11 x 14 iso booth.
Now that I've gotten rid of my console and several racks of gear I didn't need any more, it looks pretty empty.
Though it DOES have sort of a nice, open, Zen kind of feel. :)
I do from time to time have client meetings here, however, and often as many as ten people show up from the agency and client, so I suppose it's good to have space to fill.
Still, I could do with something smaller and still be fine. I'll try to get some pics of it to post.

Here's a recent picture of me in front of my new custom made Intel Quad Core machine... That gizmo under the computer table that looks like an old dot matrix printer is actually a top secret project that Rupert Neve worked on for me a while back. It's kinda of a preamp deal....
I know you're all probably a little jealous. Don't feel bad... I've got this awesome setup with this Neve thingy, so I'm good!

>>you got rid of your console? what are you using now?<<
I'm mixing the audio from the computer workstation into a summing buss instead of a console.
I said I was going to do this for years before I actually went through with this "big" idea, but with all the great summing busses that have come out in the last couple of years, the speed of new computers, and the improvements to software plug-in audio quality, I decided that the time to do it had finally arrived.
When working this way, I am able to get ideas tracked before the inspiration disappears. I think my work has improved, and it's a lot more enjoyable for me.
I'm really excited about how it sounds, too!

Mine is under construction, but is planned at 15X26...one room plus 2 iso closets (not booths, there's no air handling in them and they won't work well for people).
Here's a link documenting my design process....should be some good information in there for anyone else who wants to go down a similar path.

Kris - Have you thought about using Quiet rock? It is like 8 sheets of regular drywall: www.quietsolutions.com (http://www.quietsolutions.com)
I'm going to use it on my studio. The 530 is about $120 a 4x8 sheet.

My room's 14x25, cement floor, 'control room' above stuffed into one corner. I have a bunch of old office partitions I use more for dampening than iso - not perfect but better than nothing and easily moved around. I generally use an outside room for isolation when I need it. I have room to build some iso, but that's down the road for now.

Is that a Roland TD20?
If it is I also have one and find it great for recording as it is more immediate and I dont have to mess around with mics compressors and gates.
ZenFly06

Gary,
Yes it is the vPro with TD20 aren't they great? I have 8 analog outs going from it into 8 channels of the mixer and midi into Sonar as well. The analog outs allow me to control lots of parameters on the board...eq, effects and occaisonally dynamics (compression). I like to play my own drums and then mess around with various patches both from the td20 and Larry Seyer drums (Gigastudio).
also,
The guitar is usually direct from the amp into the board.
The bass is direct into the board.
The only mic I use is for vocals in this setup.

Wayyyy too expensive for what it does. My current plan is to use GreenGlue as a constrained layer damper sandwiched between 1/2" and 5/8" sheets of drywall. It'll be cheaper and probably more effective.

Kris, I hava also been reading from John Sayers site. I recall folks recommending 5/8 drywall for both layers as it will stop the transmission of the lower frequencies better than a 5/8 and 1/2 sandwhich. Might be worth looking into.

Just finished doing a room this way. I looked into the Quietrock, but the 1/2 version at $50/sheet was not as effective as the double drywall/GG approach, especially for bass frequencies. The double drywall/GG ends up costing about $50/4x8 coverage and should be as effective as the 530 for less than half the cost (less the extra labor of installing the second layer). A lot depends on your labor costs if you are not doing it yourself.

I used to have a commercial studio with a great live room - 16' x 24' with 10.5' ceilings. Now, all my stuff is crammed into the basement, which is 14' x 24', but 7.5' ceilings. Decent amount of room, but not a great space to record drums.

Maddog114, those are some terrific pictures. I love the sepia control room shot and that drum corner is ****ing perfect.
My studio is a spare bedroom, which I'd never measured 'till this thread. I now understand the source of damned near every acoustic problem I've ever had in that room for the last 5 years: it's 16 x 16. DUH. One wall is heavily treated for absorption and there are bookshelves & drapes around, but still...
:jo
I mix in that room and track some instruments there, but I track in all different rooms of my house, bathrooms and hallways included.

Thanks. I Picked up a bunch of Johns Manville rigid fiberglass insulation from SPI and stuffed it in the prefabbed bags from here, https://readytraps.com/
After comparing the others it was the most cost effective way to go. They already have hang straps on the back side so they were pretty easy to install and I think they look great. I have 12ea 4" and 3ea 2". Amazing difference in the accuracy of sound in the room. Probably the single best thing I have done to improve my recordings.
