His main amp was a Sears silvertone amp and he also used a Super reverb occationally on bigger gigs ,
the guitars were a 4 pup Kawai S180 from -64, it was a sort of a Firebird copy (see the first album cover) he also had a Kingston 4 pup from around -68 and a Teisco surf 4pup guitar ,
His gear is now owned by Bruce Iglauer , a friend of mine was staying at Bruce s place for some time and he got to try out his S180, pretty cool ,
I have 2 Kawais S180s, one stock and one slightly modified and both are killer Slide guitars hard to find but very nice early jap guitars tone wise, crappy tuners but great sustain and tone, there are lots of similar cheap jap guitars around, but the exact HDT S180 were only made in -64- I believe, there were also a 2 pup version back then called s160 aswell,

You can see some sort of Fender behind him. I've seen other pics where he (or the other guy) has a Super Reverb.
GIVE ME BACK MY WIG!

I am just back from a visit to Rotterdam, a fellow guitarplayer from a Dutch Guitar Forum have a '60 Teisco with 4 pickups.
We plugged it into my handwired Deluxe Reverb, and wow the sound was hudge, and thicker than a Strat. We could get it howling on vol 4 - 5.
Comparing to some numbers of Hound Dog Taylor the sound was almost there, I must say the G, B and e strings sounded thinner.
Might it be usefull to look for a Sears Silvertone Amp ?, I did already notice there are many, many, many, did I say many? types of them..what would be a good choise?

You almost have to suspect that he IS using a Silvertone amp, it's hard to believe that a super reverb would distort like that.
Go for the Twin-Twelve (model 1484), it's just such an awesome amp.

A very close friend of mine knows Bruce Iglauer pretty well (Bruce was his manager /producer- Alligator records) and Bruce now owns his old gear, and HDTs personal amp was a Silvertone , but Bruce bought him a Super for the bigger gigs and he also said he was afraid the Silvertone might fall apart :) Brewer Philips used a Super for his part,
another Slide playing buddy of mine also played a few gigs with Brewer Philips over in Sweden in the 90s,
Brewer was a pretty cool guy and he sure was a mean M- er!! :)
I do have a 1484 myself that I have modded with bigger trannies,it sure deliver the goods !!
but so does my Dumble (I actually used that for some Junkyardkings gigs with great success), I can actually get that mean HDT snarl with the Dumble as well if I use sloppy speakers :),
actually much of the early Jap guitars has that dirty sound, great out put from the pups, really great slide guitars.
HDT was in Sweden in the 60s with a blues revue (before he was well known) and he didnt have his regular jap guitars and it did not sound the same of those recordings I heard , sounded a lot more like Elmore james actually, slightly cleaner sound !!
here is some of my HDT stuff

Will the Silvertone 1484 give also a good 'Hound Dog Taylor sound' on lower volumes too..as I understand it is a 100 watt amp.
Most small venues I play the kick you out when played loud,( well they do that for other reasons too, I am in the learning process)

How can you NOT like a guy with six fingers? He was the man.

Dylan, the Twin Twelve is around 30 watts, not 100. 2 6L6's for power. Thing sounds amazing, it has its own sound, great tremelo, funny sounding reverb. You MUST use the matching cardboard speaker cab with it. They're still fairly affordable. I had one, but it just wasn't loud enough for anything I do.
Glad to see some other fans on here!

I have a 1481 that is supposed to be 30w, it's actually more like 6w. Silvertone watts are definately NOT vox watts.

the couple of times I saw Hound Dog back in the early seventies or so, he was plugged into one side of a Fender twin reverb and Brewer Phillips was playing through the other side with all the treble turned off on his guitar. Loud!
