I am in the process of converting my old Deluxe Reverb to a 3 prong cord. I havent been able to find a cord that will fit the origional grommet, which is very small.....do you guys replace the grommet with one that has a larger I.D., or use a very small diameter power cord? Inquiring minds wanna know.

I don't like that type of grommet anyway, they have a nasty tendency to break the outer sheath of the cord right there. They're an approved fitment, but I'm sure any tech will tell you of the number of amps they've had to repair or replace the power cord on due to this.

I would use a plain rubber grommet and knot the cord on the inside. It's also a good idea to zip-tie the short end to something inside the amp to stop it rotating or loosening the knot.

I wouldn't use a thinner cord, it's more likely to get damaged or broken. Some people would say that it will affect the tone too :). (I'm really not sure, I must do some research... ;))

Interesting John. I use a new strain relief with a larger inner diameter.

I use a Greenlee "D" punch and Heyco strain relief insert. You need the approprate tool to put in the insert though. More recently I've been going with separate line cords though.

"...strain relief..."
Interesting expression, considering what they do to the cord ;).

It's not too bad on a Fender amp, since Leo was smart enough to use a p-clip further down the side of the cabinet - which is the real strain relief - but I've still always disliked the things.

The knot is the classic British solution to almost any problem anyway, it must go back to our common heritage as a nation of sailors :).

I bought a matching strain relief (appropriate ID) with the power cord I put into mine. OD fit perfectly. It pinches the cord firmly, but I haven't seen any problem with it. The rubber grommet and knot approach seems like it would work well, too.

Thanks for the help....I bought a "variety pack" of grommets & there was one in there that fit it perfectly. Knotted the cord & zip tied it. Looks like it worked out great! Thanks again
