I've owned this '89 Gibson 335 dot for nearly eighteen years, and have never opened it up. I've decided to replace the pickups with '57classic/'57classic+ combo and while removing the neck pickup, I found what I think is a long neck tenon, it surprised me, as I've never actually seen one. Can the experts confirm it?

If you see a smile-shaped cavity in the neck pickup cavity, it has a long tenon.
I think all 335s have long neck tenons - I've heard that they never changed the construction. Dunno for sure.

A couple of years ago I heard rumours that all 335s had long tenons so I opened up my 2001 non-Custom Shop to look. And, surprise, there´s what appears to be a long tenon.
So I did some digging on the Gibson forums and it seems that 335s all have long tenons - they never changed the tooling. The only difference between a Gibson USA 335 and a Custom Shop one is the Holly headstock veneer.

Are those the factory pickups in yours? The look like Orville by Gibson pups.

Please report back on your impressions of the '57 classic/'57 classic+ set. I have an '88 Dot and am considering the same thing (or maybe a set of WCR Crossroads). Those stock PC board pup's often sound a bit harsh to my ears...

As soon as they arrive and are installed, I'll post my impression of them. I'm not changing just for the sake of changing, as I really don't mind these pickups. I wanted to maintain the guitars originality, but the bridge pickup has given me trouble for years and I've had enough. It developed an internal short or cold solder that no one can seem to find. Every time I get it fixed and start to bond with this guitar, the pickup craps out again, so I've decided to switch. Got a real good deal on the pair, and I've read mostly good reviews...we'll see

My impressions of the pickup change are overwhelmingly positive. It seems to have really opened up the tone and response of the guitar. I feel they nail what I consider the PAF sound incredibly well, less harsh and muddy and more versatile than the pc board stockers. When I play, I'm always working the volume knob, as I feel tone lives there, and these are great for round mellow clean when turned down and plenty of power to overdrive the front end for fat tone when turned up. I recommend them, but I play blues and roots with fat clean with edge tone.YMMV. Now if I could only figure out how to age the covers to match the rest of the hardware (nickel)!
