You know the old saying " out of site out of mind " well when I store it away I start thinking of selling it , but as soon as I take it out & play it , I fall in love with it all over again , I've owned it for over 18 years , I guess it has a home

They each have their own personality. The 66 is the warmest/sweetest, the 78 is the brightest/punchiest. the '80 pictured below on the left is the warmest/loudest.....the volume of that one is really quite amazing!

1964 Masaru Kono in spruce/Indian. A couple of years later he changed the English spelling to "Kohno".

Bringing back this this "Show your Classical" thread because I just got something (IMO) quite wonderful, made by the master himself:
Here's my new 1966 Kohno:

Those are the dealer's pics above, just got it home today and will take more pictures later. Came with the original hardshell case too.
I'm really in love with this little beauty--so nice to hold and play, and the TONE! It's true what I've heard about the very "personal relationship" between a Classical guitar and its player, how its an extension of your hand (when it's the right instrument), so much more than an electric guitar can be, with just you and the guitar and the sound.
Here' some cool info about this guitar:
1966 Masaru Kohno No.4 Classical Guitar in excellent condition. Back and sides are very nice quality solid straight grained East Indian Rosewood. Spruce top appears to be European though it might be the Japanese variety which Kohno also used at this time. Top is very well quartered with grain lines varying from 36-12 lines per inch showing lots of medullary rays.
Spanish Cedar neck with ebony fret board. Comfortable 650mm scale length with a player friendly 50mm nut width. East Indian rosewood bridge and head plate. East Indian Rosewood bindings with nice double side purflings.
This guitar is an early Kohno built very much in the Spanish style with head stock modeled after the Fleta design. Fleta himself was a judge in the 1966 Paris competition which Kohno won and remarked that Kohno's guitars reminded him of his own. This guitar has five simple fan struts and a very nice rosette in black, white, red and green in a traditional pattern reminiscent of Hernandez and Barbero. Tuners are the original units with 39mm spacing and are in excellent condition. Guitar is in perfect playing order and has an excellent neck with action 3mm on the treble side and 4mm on the bass. This guitar has excellent sound with lovely bright trebles, good volume and a rich warm bass. Original hardshell case. A terrific 40 year old Classical Guitar!

You guys are killin' me with your Kohnos. I had a late 60's Brazilian/Cedar Kohno that I had to sell to pay rent twenty years ago. I still miss that guitar. One of the best sounding and playing classics I've ever had.
I don't have photos yet, but I have a Brazilian/Euro Spruce Marcelino Lopez built in Madrid in 1959. Marcelino Lopez Nieto is one of only five living Spanish builders included on Summerfields list of the finest guitar makers since 1800. He's a monster builder that just didn't get the big fame of some of the other Spanish builders.
The guitar was given to me by an elderly lady from Argentina who heard me playing at a wedding. She told me she was too old to play anymore and wanted the guitar to be played and appreciated. She bought the guitar new in Madrid in '59. I'll see if I can muster up some photos.

hey mudslide, I had that VERY SAME guitar on approval for a few days!! I decided to return it. Then it sold to a friend on the AG Classical Corner forum. I saw it was up for sale again recently, looks like you got it.......CONGRATS!
Here are two Kohno's, the one on the left I had in on approval, a neato 69. I also decided to return that one. The one on the right, a 64, is a real keeper.....what a great sounding guitar!!

And here is my newest baby, a GORGEOUS spruce/Brazilian '76 Velazquez.......I love it!

That's an amazing story! Get some pics up if you can, James--sounds like a terrific guitar with a good soul.
Riffmeister: wow, small world (perhaps the Classical world is smaller than the electric?). The '66 Kohno is really sweet, I wish it didn't have the center seam repair, but appears to be a pro job and solid, but the price is very good and I really love the tone--it just seems to come from deep inside and spread out everywhere! (BTW why didn't you bond with it?)

I thought it was a nice warm and rich sounding guitar, perhaps could have had a slightly better treble response. But the narrow-ish neck (for a classical guitar) is why I returned it. I guess I must have fat, imprecise LH fingers! :p The center seam repair was done beautifully, and the condition of the rest of the guitar was superb. I hope you get many years of pleasure from it. There really is something cool about owning an older instrument.......

I had no idea there were so many classical guitarists here.
Wouldn't some of you like to swap out one of those old "grand-dad guitars" (:)) for a nice Heatley or Melancon? 'Cause I have a lot of both.
I'm really trying to trade off some sweet electrics to get a few top-notch instruments that require no current, ya dig?

Interesting rosette, I've never seen one like that on a Bernabe! And what is the top wood? Has the color of cedar, but a very wide grain that I've never seen with cedar.
I had a 96 spruce/Braz Bernabe for about a year. Very nice instrument. At the same time, I had a 96 spruce/Braz Tezanos Perez, another Madrid instrument.

Paul tried something different
the top is half wide grain & the other half is tighter grain
wide for bass , tight for treble
red cedar

Interesting idea. Kind of like this Tacchi which sports stiffer spruce in the middle and softer cedar on the edges.
