I was just reading another post where a guy is going to mod an old record player to make a guitar amp. I've had a similar idea for a while... I have two old green face altec power amps (100 watts each). What would it take to make a cool guitar amps? just build a pre-amp section for them?
I'm not really much of a tech but I have been an electrician for years so I may be able to understand enough to do it. I ran the idea by Mark Cameron but although he thought it was a great idea he didn't really give me any input.
Are they tube Altecs or Solid State?
The SS ones sounded pretty awful but the tube ones would make a pretty good guitar amp with the right preamp in front.
I have a goldface Altec stereo tube power amp with 2 EL34's per side that sounds really good.

Yeah, they're both tube, two EL34s, I wouldn't even consider it if they were SS. Are you using yours with a preamp?

Yes, there is a matching stereo tube preamp/switcher that came with it, and I use a Summit mic pre into that from the guitar. In between the preamp and power amp is a digital processor I use for biamping and general tone control. Then the biamped signal goes to a hotrodded Leslie.
Tube, biamped, digital processed, Leslie.
Crazy huh? Sounds good though.
