I have 2 mosferatu's, a zendrive, a tbiac, a box of rock, with a woodrow and super 6 coming. They cover my needs. Also a Katana, RC, Gainster that it looks like I'll be selling (although I like them all a lot too). thining about a Tiimy, Eternity, and Cactus Crunch (I usually have 3-5 on the board at any one time).
But I'd like to have a TS for old times sake and because sometimes I still really like that sound.
What's your favorite TS style pedal? I'm inclining toward the Red Snapper, but what do you recommend?
Thanks!

Use the other botton to take a very rich smooth TS out into other realms, I'd maybe even say Marshalesque.

I'm thinking about getting the byoc screamer and doing the landgraff mod. does anyone know if this makes it exactly like the landgraff? i know they're all different, but what else makes a landgraff a landgraff besides the change in clipping and the led mod?

I got a CMATMOD modded TS BYOC type. One of the best TS's pedals I've ever used. I tried to find better TS variants in boutiqueland. I did find different and interesting, but the CMATMOD remains.
Fat, less hump, touch sensitive, articulate and stacks great for me.

Cusack Screamer was my gateway into the world of boutique pedals. It has been on my board from day one, I have owned several tube screamers both boutique and mass-produces (bad monkey, ts9...) after it but none of them have been able to knock it off. Cusack is the perfect tube screamer...

BYOC TS808 is pretty dang cool. The Red Snapper is a good choice too. Also, probably can't go wrong with the Maxon OD-9.

The Fulldrive II is a real hard pedal to beat, although it has too much bass to be considered a standard TS flavour IMO.

I've got some clips of a Keeley TS-9, Maxon OD-820, Zen, Voodoo Sparkle Drive, and a Marshall Bluesbreaker. All of these pedals have their own take and are good in their own right. I just picked up the Marshall BBII and am really impressed with the tones of this pedal. Nice light crunch all the way to singing lead tones. The 80's Tribute Rock Tune was done with just the Marshall BBII pedal. Here's the link:

Lots of good pedals recommended so far, but a number of them aren't really tubescreamers, imo.

But I'll 2nd the MJM Blues Devil. Each one sounds like the 1 out of 40 vintage 808s that Eric Johnson would keep. When I'm going for *that* sound, a BD's the only thing I need between my strat & vibroverb..

Yeah, if you have really really really really really really good ears!

Here (http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=23397.0)'s a cool posting about Landgraff:

I know GrandLaff lurks here.
Some thanks to him are in order.
I'd like to thank Jack Orman for GrandLaff's TS values.
I'd like to thank Zachary Vex for Grandlaff's Mosfet Boost.
I'd like to thank Leo Fender for GrandLaff's 20 watt amp. A rebiased and repowered 5E3 clone using 6L6 tubes.
I'd like to thank Kevin O'Connor for GrandLaff's Plexi.
His "Mo D" distortion is the run of the mill modded ProCo Rat.
His Wah pedal is a stock repro of a basic Vox except with a Red Fasel and a 51k input resistor instead of a 68k.

When is silver solder really important? Only when you can't tell the difference between OhmS law and Cole Slaw.

The reason his pedals/amps sound good (and they do) is because the circuits he clones are good. It's just that simple.

I have had several (TS9, FD2, Red Snapper, Ac booster) and the one's I like the best are the Red snapper which is the most transparent of the lot (least compression, least mids) and the AC booster (v2) that has more a touch more mids than the Red snapper and a touch more compression. The FD2 was too compressed and mid heavy to my liking (wierd thing is I actually liked the TS9 reissue more than the FD2).

In the pantheon of tube screamers the Red snapper is way underestimated in my opinion. The only downside (if even that) is that the lack of compression will make any faults in your playing audible.

What's your favorite TS style pedal? I'm inclining toward the Red Snapper, but what do you recommend?
Thanks!

I'm a little confused by this thread. It seemed to me you were thinking about a "real" tubescreamer, "for old times sake" (i.e. seemed like you wanted a real tubescreamer) and though I haven't yet read the whole thread, the first page everybody is recommending pedals that are variations on TS, and it seems like you are aksing also for non-TS sound?

Am I getting this wrong?

I mean, though my main board generally so far has Zendrive, and aCot50 in that area, neither of those are really TS sounds as far as I am concerned. I also own, and revisited last night and was mightily impressed by my Blues Devil, but I sure wouldn't call THAT a TS sounding circuit really...it has all those nice sounds, touch, tight bass, and all...whereas a TS is really a little (I think) less sensitive, less...

Did I miss something?

The Rodenberg series. My 828 is now one of my favorite pedals. It is a stellar pedal: two 808 circuits in one box, with mid-hump switches, extra drive, and the ability to run side by side or stacked. Wicked good and wicked cool looking. Finally, some of the best build quality I've seen yet.

Yes, the OD-9 Pro+ is my current favorite TS pedal. I've tried so many TS variants and the OD-9 Pro+ is the clear winner, for me anyway. I just received Tonefreak's Abunai 2 as well, very similar to the Landgraff DO, those two pedals together seem to cover a lot of ground.

The MJM Blues Devil and Red Snapper are my faves. The Red Snapper doesn't sound like a straight-forward TS to me though. It sounds a bit more open and less compressed. The MJM is everything a TS should be.

Like he said. I had a BD for a year or so =best "true" TS I've used. I have 2 OD's on my board now -Red Snapper and KOT v4. The red-side of my KOT gets tube screamerish enough for me these days and I use the RS for more of a clean/slightly dirty boost. The RS driving the yellow side of the KOT stacks well. I'm not a fan of stacking in general, but this combo works. The Red Snapper is a must try pedal IMO. FWIW I think the new one sounds/works better than the orig. If you are looking for a quick, defined, loud TS type pedal with beautiful tone - this is it. If you want a little squishier and vibey (more of the classic TS feel - I would go with the MJM BD. Another really good thing about the BD is the note "bloom". Not a dramatic as a comp, but very musical and effective. My TS 2 cents.

You should try, if you can find it, the korg overdrive OVD-1. It was made in the 80's. Me and two others have compared that overdrive with a ts9,a ts9(modified) and an old mint tube screamer 808. For the test , we used a Bassman(59).
Result: We could made the difference of sound between all the ts9 vs 808, but no difference between the Korg and the 808.
That korg is builded like thank.

Other suggestion: Klon or fulldrive II.

I have a Tube Screamer (TS-10) with the 808 mod. I like it fine...consistently good performer. BUT I much prefer my MI Audio Blues Pro Overdrive. It has slightly less of a mid hump, more lower frequencies available, and more gain on tap. VERY versitile pedal, and in my opinion more musical than any other I've heard. True bypass, excellent quality, etc. GREAT pedal for $100.

I too have searched for that ts tone. I have a ts9 but through my classic 30 and hd deville, it seems weak. It is probably my set up because I mostly play in a small room and can't turn it up past 2-3. At the jams, works good with a chorus on top for leads. Recently, I picked up a Danelecto daddy-o and found the tone I was looking for. Very versatile. I also grabbed one of the Boss ds1 at GC on sale this weekend for $30. Love the natural clipped setting. Best of luck, Keith.

i play a heavily modded ts-9 RI. it has carbon capacitors and resistors just like the original 808 (not the RI 808 though) and it has a quick change slot for the op-amp. it came with 3 chips plus the NOS jrc4558d already inside. i took it out and put in the rc4558p, its a little bit smoother, for more of a boost rather than drive.
