Hi Pete,
We only have pics I took and posted on the Dealers Emporium which I think you've already seen. But here are those same pics on Bill's site, along with details:
http://chapinguitars.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/page10.html
Still need pics of the 2 others Houlas that are almost finished.
Thanks,
Mike

And with luck, this'll be the unveiling of the Pearl Creamsicle Burst PimpMaster! And the Chiro-Caster cocobolo carve-top Hawk will definitely put in an appearance.
I'll be bringing the Ganesha and an interesting delay or two as well. I just dropped a Fane Alnico 12" into a beater open-backed 1-12 cab - funny as hell to see the Ganesha feeding that scruffy little cab, but the results are sweet!

Tomo, they look great, but they play and sound even better. I have yet to find a more comfortable, smoother neck then on my Chapin. They sound incredibly open, balanced, thick, and clear too. Did you get a chance to play one?

Hi DerekMinnich,
Thanks for more info and comment on this guitar neck.
I don't usually care that much frame ... but I glad to hear that
it's not only look but also sound really good. I never have a chance
to play chapin's guitar yet. I hope I will have a chance to play
one. Anybody has it? around Bostn Area?

I just want to add something about Bills guitars. I have bought from Buscarino, Campallone, Gibson and Fender Custom shops. I have played Suhr, Grosh, Sadowsky, Lentz, Anderson, older Valley arts guitars, as well as many other Fender style guitars. My Stratahoula is the only guitar that compared favorably to my (now sold) relic strat, at its own game. I picked that relic over everyone I could get my hands on over a several year period. Bill is the only person I would feel comfortable with, and trust to build me a knock them dead sounding and playing guitar. My Stratahoula is alive sounding, it has to be played to be believed. THANK YOU BILL!!

Tomo,
That's a shame - at the NYCTF there was one in the same room as you, my "Hankahoula" - it was the Fiesta Red Stratahoula that Hansoloist demoed the ERT33 with.
If you don't tie up with Bill, see above, PM me (you have my email address)
we'll try and tie up next time you're in the NYC area.
Bill's guitars are sublime.

Shouldn't be too long until Skyway madness........just gotta pick out a finish! Anyone got any ideas? Bills got a top for me with big wide flames.
I'm not going into Blue, Green, Purple or anything wild, I just want something simple, gorgeous, tasteful, etc...anyone got any ideas?

Derek,
I've always fancied a guitar in that finish on '50s Lesters now called "Darkburst" - some examples seem to have a lot going on in the shading (ha!) yet still look very tasty.
Best, Pete.

The thing is, I don't know if I want it that dark around the edges.....maybe a cherry, honey, amber....too many options for me alone to decide.

I know it is my guitar and I am biased, but I really dig the way it way it kind of gets yellowish gold in a way. Warm amber in one light and then it changes. The effect also happens on the mahogany back so it goes beyond the redwood top. I really need to learn how to use a camera.

Hey Tomo!
I have a feeling you would really like my guitar. You love Pro reverbs and great cleans just like I do. :) I told Bill I wanted the best sounding clean and low gain tones he could get out of a Strat style guitar, and boy did he hit the mark! I have never, ever heard presence like this out of any guitar! Scott Lerner says you are a monster player. Next time you are near NJ, stop by and try my Chapin, and Ill pay you for a lesson at the same time. How can you beat that? :dude

Tomo, Yes, well I wasn't letting the thing out of my sight either! There are some pics further back a little into this thread. All the P'ups are handwound by Bill. Has a very interesting Bridge P'up - Tone up/Volume down a bit= Great Strat, Volume up/Tone down a bit=P90.
One Tone controls the Neck the other the Bridge, none on Middle. Pull up on Bridge Tone brings in Neck.
Sounds complicated but very intuitive when playing.
I think you would enjoy one of Bills' creations, he puts a lot of love into each one.
PM = See little PM button in my message? Hit it, you can send me a message.

I really haven't picked up another guitar since I got the Chapin so..... I do have a G&L Legacy Special that I used to play a lot. I do not like the bridge pickup on it anymore. To bright for me. I do like the Neck and Neck Middle position on the guitar with the Beagle.
I used the strat at a forum event. After my first lead, the group looked at the amp and said, "That amp is amazing." The best tones I have ever heard coming out of the Beagle was Joker with his Chapin Tele. Incredible. So perhaps it does prefer singles.
I just got a Two Rock Custom so I am out of cash, however when I do have cash my next purchase is a Chapin semi hollow short scale single coil machine.
If you are wondering, yes the TR Custom sounds OK with my Chapin.

Those two amps are kind diametrically opposed!
One with as few a knobs as you need the other....well, er, lots of knobs!
Did the Two Rocks take a bit of getting used to?

The are just about as different as my tastes run. Thats why I like them together so much. I thought about getting a Allie Black n Tan, but it is similar to the Beagle in feel. This way I've got more of a spectrum to work with.
Getting used to the TR is taking time. I took me about 2 weeks just to start to understand how everything works together. I've only had it three weeks now, so I am still experimentiing. I like the tones I've found, but still have not dialed it in. It has both a send and receive volume for the loop, so they both interact as a master volume. Then the two gains and two volumes, or 6 switches. ooyyy!! As you pointed out, there are a lot of knobs. It also has a three button foot switch. Channel / Mid Boost / EQ Bypass. Very cool to have. Using the foot switch took some practice.
I am currently running the TR through my 1X12 Blue. So I have not pushed the amp. I am having Rob DiStefano build me a cab (Northen Jersey www.Frettech.com). I am going to pick it up next saturday. I have a Harry Joyce speaker ready to go in it. Hopefully, I will have a little time to myself next saturday to see what the amp can really do.

New Pre-amp tubes. George says everything is fine. It is nothing to worry about. After the summer is fine. I have class in Hoboken on Saturdays. We could do something efter class. Let me know when you are interested and we'll get together. To be thruthful, I want to here the beagle with a short scale single coil guitar myself. Bill's got me thinking of a semi hollow short scale with SC's. It is driving me crazy.

Chris,
If we can do it earlier we will - crazy time for me right now.
I've just been playing a selection of Strats and thinking well, these things are so great to play, sound good etc. Favourite being a reworked (very early) SRV with Fralin Hot Vintage and Chapinesque control wiring.
Finally I picked up the Hank' of Bills' and the difference was remarkable! All that Strat things we love but just more so - and in the true Gibson scale so much more comfortable for me to play (old, gnarly hands).
I really do like Fralin's P'ups a lot but Bill Chapin's "Black Dogs" are in a different Ballpark somehow, particularly when you start manipulating the Volume and Tone controls.
Best, Pete.

Best, Pete. The color is a semi-tranlucent mix of sonic blue with a very slight hint of surf green. The bridge pickup on this is one of my Black Dogs but a bit more of a traditional design than the Big dog model that you have.

I want to register a complaint. It is unscrewpewluss (sp?) to post pictures of delicious new Houlas on TGP. Please do not do it again. Current Chapin owners, soon to be Chapin owners and wanna be Chapin owners do not need the unsettling mental state that pictures like this cause. By the way, how is my new LauraHoula coming along??

Scott Wing's is an 11 degree angled peghead. It changes the feel and the tone as it changes the physical dynamic of the neck. I like them on shorter scales in particular when going for a bit more of that explorer type of thing.

Best, Pete. I took a very quick single pass for clips using my George Dennis head and clicking a howie pedal in for dirt. No setting mic placement or anything. Below I cut the one pass up into a dirty and clean clips. This is what I got, I left all the clams etc.

I wanted it to sound like (EJ+Jimi+SRV)*10
What gives!!
The first clip from Bill I've ever listened to was one of those on the Chapin Guitar Shop Site...... almost 4 Years ago?
Since then, I've listen to just about every clip he posted on the site (many guitars thru many pedals and amps).
Only this time, he's playing "My Guitar".....:dude
And he still sounds every bit just like Bill Chapin...talk about signature tone.

Hi Bill,
It was a nice talking w you last night.
A lot of interesting storys!
Great tone. Beautiful!
I know the guitar has a great warm and clear tone.
But way you play... very tastefull ... I love clean clip
very much! Deep tone and very very delicious.
Are you using your Thumb?
I hear some Roy Buchanan, Albert Collins
BB King (my favorite !) mixed with jazz essence.
Very tasty playing. You have great right taste

Tomo Wow, thanks Tomo. That's very flattering coming from a player of your caliber. I enjoyed talking to you last night as well. Besides being a such a great player, you're also a very funny, genuine, and gracious human being.
As for picking technique, I mainly use a combo of alternating my first finger and thumb, along with this somewhat bizarre alternate picking using the first finger nail as a pick by pulling back the first finger pad with my thumb (it looks the same as using a pick there's just no pick) I like the tone it gets me. Roy, Albert and BB were all big influences as were guys like Clapton, Eric Gale, Jim Hall, Earl Hooker, Buddy Guy and Jimmy Bryant. I'll never be close to any of those guys but I try to take a little from all of them and make it come out sounding like myself (pretty much the same thing I try to do when building instruments as well.)

if you're in the NYC area for gigging, i'd be more than happy to bring down my T-Bird (http://home.earthlink.net/~jokerny1/music/guitars/tbird/tbirdverybig.jpg)for you to try.
it has a thicker, deeper sound for the rhythm stuff that i asked bill to voice it for, and might not pop as much as a swamp / maple tele, but it'll give a terrific idea of Bill's work, which IMHO is nonpareil.

quite positive feel on everything. I really enjoyed talking

be really awesome. I love old blues stuff... we have very similar
taste in music. I thought you were using your thumb... warmer
very meaty tone.. i wish I can do more finger picking..
sometime I do for Joe Pass style playing. Bill, I love Earl Hooker
,do you know "Two bugs and a roach" What a title! Great record.
Eric Gale another tasty guy... Super 400 and skinny strings.
Do you like BB's "Blues is King"? You got great tone and
wonderful touch! People can grab a lot of info.... but "Touch &
feel" You got it!
Hi Pete,

then this person can control individual instrument
for each person... I think that very very rare.
We are very fortunate to know Bill!

Interesting choice of words, as I actually have plans to kill for that T-Bird. Oh, and don't read this, Mike.
Big Mike's Z28 deserves more detail as well - it was sounding really nice through Chet's 2 Scumbacks.
I was very happy hearing my new VVT Twisted Tweed through a cab I put together yesterday: Tonker + Stonehenge!:dude The VVT is to the left, behind Jeff:

Z28 was killin. LOVE my amp...when I could kick Shades off it long enough for me to play it!!! :D
I was trying a new speaker for me too, a G12H30, really broke in, and it sounded great. But Chet's 2 Scumbacks even in a MDF Marshall cab were FANTASTIC!!! Gotta get a hold of some myself. they were the 75Hz H versions. Sweet!
Mike's sig and Bird rig is killer as well. I left whatever the setting MIke had, I think it was pushed clean channel Mike?? Through his Burt w/ Swamp Thang. Killer tones for sure. "Clapton" is what everyone said after I was playing it for a while. So MANY killer tones in that guitar, I never grabbed for the knobs on the amp. Just the switch and volume controls on the Bird. Treated it like my Z28 really, great tone, and change it with picking style and vol. knob.
Peter's VVT was fantastic as well. You can tell it and the Z28 were designed by guys on the same road, but ended at different destinations. Make sense? The VVT had a bit more of the Fender vibe, and was sweet anyway, but the Tonker/Stonehenge pair with it was KILLER!! Not a bad amp in the room though.
And Bill.... Flesh tone my rear end. it's Pink. I swear that's how I see it.:p

Here's the VVT:

Mike, I had you in the lead (2nd gain) mode, but without the tone bypass "boost". I tend to set my clean gain very high, and then I just hit the lead with a touch more. This way I can get similar tones when in either mode with the volume control. I'm not a high gain guy, although that Sig will do it, big time. I had the lead gain at about 8:30 (2 1/2!).
The Swamp Thang in the Burt throws out a lot of lows, which is what I was going for in that cab - big 2x12 sound in a 1x12, plus able to handle lots-o-watts for clean headroom with lows, for the jazz stuff.
That, in combination with the Fillmore in the neck, was getting you those Cream Clapton tones to my ear. It was also the way you were playing. I thought you tended to play differently with the tone you were dealing with - in a very good way!

New amp company www.vvtamps.com
Peter and I have a mutual friend back east, who's endorsed by them. He just toured and visited the factory. As well as a high gain channel switcher, they do a take on the tweed series. Peter's Twisted tweed is a Tweed Deluxe style amp. I believe it has master volume, and power switch. IE: 1/2 power etc. VERY cool stuff. I was quite impressed. Similar to the Z28, but a little more fendery.

But the best speakers I have to say were the Scumback G12H30 Clones. Great sounding speakers. That's my tiny Boogie cab with the Red DrZ on top. Nice little cab for sure.
Of course that lovely (I still say it was pink Bill. ;) ) Chapin Stratohoula was killer.

Hi Big Mike,
Thanks. Can I get without speakers right?
Because I have Eminence speakers... I just got Stonehenge too.
Are both cabs same type? Since I have so many speakers,
I really need to get more cabs. Thank you for detail info, Mike!
Someday I would like to taste Pink Bill!

Best, Pete. I'm still playing around a touch with the specs a touch but basically it's another of my Artist inspired "Tribute" instruments. This idea was brought on by the recent Cream shows. Basically it's the concept of a Clapton model Strat melded with a Gibson SG. Lightweight Mahogany Body, 24.6 scale Houla with very low noise strat pickups and a mid-boost preamp. Rosewood board capped Maple neck (though possibly a one piece maple neck) with a chunky but comfy soft V profile. Blocked vintage style trem.

The day Bill stops ambushing his customers with "Hey, I got this idea for a guitar I'm building on spec THAT HAPPENS TO BE RIGHT UP YOUR ALLEY!!!" is the day Bill stops putting money away for Spence's edumacation.
He KNOWS I don't need another guitar right now. No way I can justify the Keef. Can't happen. Won't happen. Probably. Unless...

I just want that juicy ballsy tone - I ain't after sting-count-correctness!
Saw the Stones about 4 years ago - Keef's Tele was deep and rich and full and yummy, but when he'd pick up the 345(?), it'd screech and squeal and be ice-pick city! I wanted to explain to him that he had his guitars backwards! :)
This Keef Tribute is just freaking killing me... :(

Hi A440,
All of those things can be specified by the customer. I own a similar Tele-Gib, but with different appointments. By definition, it's probably a Tele style body and Gibson (24.65" or close) scale.
Mine is mahogany neck/rosewood board, and has a trem tailpiece. http://www.tonegurus.com/assets/images/chapinsigburt.jpg
Feel free to email me with any specific questions you may have about Bill's guitars and how they come into being - in some ways it's situational - and that's part of the magic!

Mike To be a Tele-gib it really only needs to be that shape and have humbuckers. Each of the 3 that I have built so far has been different. The first was done to capture the tone and vibe of Beck's Tele-gib as it sounded on Cause we've ended as lovers off Blow byBlow and the Secret Policeman's other ball show. Amitar owns this own and it nails that sound and I believe ,though it isn't visually exactly, it captures the classic look.
The second one I melded Beck's Yardbird era esquire (arm carve ,belly cut, his esquire neck shape and size) with his Tele-gib with a few minor refinements to the sound to open up the sound a bit more. I did a flamed maple capped flamed maple neck, changed the pickups very slightly, and added a compound radius (8.5-11.) The second one belongs to Brewbeck and, while it doesn't NAIL Beck's Tele gib sound like Amitar's (not what I was trying to do on this one), it has a mix of Beck's tone with a little more the open quality that I love.
The third was Mike's which I decided to meld the previous two together with elements from Beck's Les Paul years and Strat years. Both previous Tributes were 25.5 scale with maple neck/boards. This one I went Gibson scale (24.625) and a rosewood capped Mahogany neck. I also added a Strat trem and voiced the electronics slightly differently.
I can do others but I try to come up with at least one different cool element to each one to keep them one of a kind pieces.

Here's a T-bird that I built for a customer in Colorado that's a bit of a twist on what The Keef Tribute will be. This one has a Brazilian Rosewood board instead of the all maple neck of the Keef. this one also has a 4 way switch for neck and bridge pickups in series. Otherwise, I voiced out the pieces of wood and the pickups very much like the Keef will be. Capable of plenty of shimmer but with use of the tone control there's a lot of meat there too. Please excuse the small and less than great pic.

Hi Bill,
I really appreciate what you sensed about my playing.
It was a fun talking to you too. That maple neck/ lip stick pus
great sounding guitar! (whoever the owner of this guitar..)
I like way you build guitars that sing
with clearer tone. Thank you for recommend my upcoming
clinic dvd. People are already asking me about.
Hi Pete,
Yes, Bill builds amazing quality of guitars. Just because he is
a great guitar player as well. He knows about tone and he can
sense how you pick that tone. I like his very detail work. (insane?)
LA trip was a more than success. I am very happy about the result.
My clinic dvd will be out soon. Now gearpage member is planning
my guitar clinic in NY. Hope you can come!

Hi all. I just wanted to say that I recently bought VetteLover's mahogany stratahoula with the tortoise shell guard and the tele knobs and I am totally loving this guitar. I am by no means a great or even a good player, but when I pick up this guitar I find myself playing better than I have ever played before and I also find myself not being able to put the guitar down. It plays great, sounds great and I couldn't be happier. Anyone who know me knows that I have had more guitars than I can remember, but I can honestly say that this is the first keeper of the lot. I have now experienced the Chapin magic. Thank you Bill.
P.S.: I've been meaning to send the guitar to Bill for a once over and I've been so busy playing it that I haven't had time to pack it up and ship it off.

congrats, F. pic & sounds here, hosted by abergdahl (http://web.telia.com/~u89404043/chapin/) . i strummed it a bit when it was Tim Volpicella's - a world-class player, musician, one of my favorites. Tim had to sell it & i know that had to be a tough decision. i had a mahogany 'houla and that darn thing was one of my all-timers, too. light, full, rich, versatile. enjoy

Each pup selection is another great sound. It's very diverse, for example with the bridge tone pot pulled and mid pup I get a great country tone.
This gtr will be a family heirloom.

Specs:
Body: lightweight southern swamp ash
Neck: quartersawn eastern maple with a birdseye maple fingerboard
Pickups: custom wound Black Dog single coils
Radius:10-12" compound
Neck shape: custom medium C/U hybrid
Vintage trem with steel block
Bone nut
parchment guard
tobacco burst
gold hardware
Yeah Tag, I have to admit your gold h/w is why I called Bill up and said, gotta go for the gold. : ) I think it matches the finish quite elegantly despite my reservations on the durability of gold.
I've got a couple more shots I'll post later.
Sounds gorgeous thru the CT. I've taken it to open mics and it sounds great through a Champ. Played it at a gig and sounded divine through the Onyx. I still haven't dialed in my optimum OD sound as I'm so taken with the cleans.

Lance, thats absolutely gorgeous. I have a houla myself that is fantastic but yours still gives me envy! I have a blackwood board on mine, I would love a maple neck Hawk though eventually (I have a carved top on order but it will have a madagascar rosewood neck with blackwood board). I would like a bare bones simple hawk though one of these days with a maple board....great tones to be had there.

hawkeyeinexile - Thanks. I'd like to take credit for the specs but it's all Bill. I told him my playing style, the kinds of necks I like, I wanted a strat sound and everything else I defer to his expertise.
Some guys may argue about a 2 piece neck but Bill said it adds durability so I told him to do what he thinks is best. I trust that he will make it sound fabulous and it does. I don't ever have to worry about that neck twisting.
DerekMinnich - Thanks for the kind words. Bill gets all the credit. Sounds like you've got some nice stuff on order. No doubt they will be fantastic.
Tag - gotta give you thanks and some credit in my decision. I was contemplating going for a Fender reissue but when you posted those three strat clips blind. I chose the Chapin hands down with no foreknowledge, using only my ears. So that clinched it for me.
Gents, it sounds even better than it looks. :D

Hey Lance,
I was just playing mine through the tipper. It is EASILY the best Strat tones I have ever had. The Fender CS relic
Mary K I owned was the second best sounding Strat I had ever been able to find. Mandolin had a vintage 50s one that had been refretted with larger Frets, and that thing killed as well. I dragged my relic in, and that one vintage one was slightly better than my Relic to my ear. The Chapin is even better than that special relic, (You choose it blind over the relic in that comparison as well) so I would think it sounds even better than that Vintage one. I am NOT a vintage fan in general. I have played literally hundreds, and this one particular piece was the only one I fell in love with. My Chapin at the very least is its equal tonally, and plays FAR, FAR better, has nicer woods, and looks KILLER!
What great guitars!! Thanks Bill!
My playing is starting to come together again, so Ill sart posting clips of it in the up coming weeks! :dude Chapin clips coming at you whether you want them or not! :D

I think you hit the nail on the head. It's a mistake to over-specify. Tell Bill what you are striving for (and the look) and leave the rest to him.
What I also love about the Chapin 'Houlas is that at first glance, to the uninitiated, they look very much alike but they are not at all, each one is very individual.
Tag, Looking forward to the Chapin thru a CT22!

Mike - i'm sorry... :(
:)
I'm still trying to come to grips with the sound. It's very clear, chimy, not wussy at all. A lot of power to it. I definitely dig it big time, now I'm just trying to figure out how to use it. I'm not a whammy bar expert either, so I'm still trying to figure out how to not sound like ass when I wiggle.
Pete - it was supposed to be (and will be later) a candy tangerine burst - kinda like the background. The finisher didn't like what he came up with, so he made it pearl creamsicle burst, sorta champagne to orange burst. And while it's really a cool color that grows on you the more you look at it, Bill and I have decided to try again for the metallic instead of the pearl. But not yet!

I didn't see the exhibit way back unfortunately, I was not born yet!! It was 25 bucks, but well worth it. Just to see that stuff in person is mindblowing when you think of how old it really is. The coolest part was a life size projection of the open coffin highlightin all the objects that were actually on his body when buried. Then all the objects were there in the room. His knife and sheath, the head piece with the cobra and vulture, etc. It was awesome!!
