View Full Version : Swapped pickups?

I've been starting to assume lately that my stock les paul pickups might have been wired backwards, meaning the neck pickup is in the bridge pickup slot, and the bridge pickup is in the neck pickup slot. What I'm talking about is that someone might have accidentally swapped them before putting them in.
Is there a way to check this without actually removing my strings and taking them out? (multimeter?) I will be changing them around if I find that they are swapped, as I'm not getting a desired attack.

You can unsolder them and check the resistance with an ohm meter without removing the pickups. The bridge should read higher. Sometimes not by much depending on which pickups are in there. I really don't like the tone of most Gibson pickups, they sound very tame to me.

You can take a reading with your meter by plugging a cord in the guitar and reading the end of it .It will be a little lower than actual values but close and enough to give you an idea. Many neck pups are a little lower reading than bridge but then again many models are almost the same.

So should the neck give a lower or higher reading?
Weldaar says higher, kjrocks says lower.

What makes you think this? They have different attacks, seems like the neck is swapped to me (duller attack than the bridge pickup). Plus I'm kinda just toying with the sound to see if I can make my guitar sound better without buying new pickups.

Flip the pups, put the bridge where the neck is and vice versa. You might just like it that way. If you do decide to get a different set of pups,
I recommend www.crcoils.com
A tad pricey but IMHO there are none better.

Attack, sustain, tone, warmth, etc. are all subjective values and must be evaluated by looking at the whole package. So what kind of amp are you using and is this a Gibson LP or an Epiphone? Do you know what the stock p/ups were specified for this model LP?

This is an Epiphone LP Custom, yeah I know I should swap out the pickups so this can be a better guitar, but I'm pretty short on cash right now so that's not exactly possible. I'm running it through a Marshall Jmp1 preamp which leads to my computer for mixing at the moment. When jamming I run that through to a tremolux head yelling out of a 2x12.
