Got a COT50 and love it. Looking for another OD to stack with it to get a bit more gain. Had an OCD and sold it. To compressed for me. I have an Xotic AC booster that works pretty well but I'm looking for that magic combo with the COT50. Any ideas?

I'm thinking a Timmy or Eternity...

E for sure. The Barber LTD (Black) and Zen Drive also sound great with a CoT.

I thought the Eternity would be more compressed than an OCD, no?

The E is very open. The OCD has alot more compression.

+1

My favorite aside from the E for stacking with it is an RC Booster FWIW.

The CoT50 + Timmy combo is incredible - it's like they're made for each other...

Is there any consensus on where the CoT works best: before or after the E (or other OD etc)?

I put mine after everything but delay, but that's just because I think of it as a second amp.

It sounds best before, IMO - so you don't lose the volume knob dynamics.

before...E has less compession than OCD I tried--both with single coils and humbuckers.

I don't think you'll ever find a concensus when we are talking about stacking, either pedals or order.

Generally, some guys like to boost on the way out (as someone here mentioned, to get that boost and it feels like a second amp) whereas I personally, and some others, like to have it way early (mine is after wah, second pedal in chain) so they can use guitar volume to control the sound and tone and gain (in a way). Meaning, when it is first you can take it from clean (guitar vol somewhere like 6-7 or so) to mild OD breakup, to distortion like...and back again.

I have been getting more and more into adjusting volume for tone. Main thing, I used to do it some, then saw a video of Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks playing in Allman bros. and it was amazing...both guys are adjusting their guitar vol ALL the time, not just to get the main different sounds or when going from rythm to lead, but during solos, during rythm playing...it is almost like a nervous tic, but I realize they were really listening to their tone pretty much automatically and are such "touch" players that they were at any given time getting the most out of their sound. I tried it and it is definitely for me.

If I were you, I'd try it both ways, AT volume that you play, and in a band setting at a practice and see which way was best for you.

It is pretty compressed at least with my humbuckers. I could imagine it's less compressed with single coils. With humbuckers, there isn't much left of the attack.

In "Guess the boutique Tubescreamer (http://johannburkard.de/blablog/music/effects/2006/11/11/Guess-the-boutique-Tubescreamer.html)", you could see that the Eternitys wave form was much more compressed than the Tubulator's.
