I'm intrigued by the Koll Superior. With the set neck, can that still cop traditional Tele tones? I imagine it's got it's own thing going, but I wonder if the Electroflux pickup can get Tele-type tones. What does it sound like?
Thanks!
I have not played a Superior, but every Koll I have picked up has been impressive. Great builder making some really cool stuff. Currently, the Tornado is the one that works for me (with a Hipshot trem), but they are all worth a look IMO.

Saul will answer any questions very honestly. Shoot him a PM or email.

The electroflux is a very cool pickup. I've got one in my Duonado.
It's pretty much a cross between a tele bridge pickup and a P90. It does have some twang to it, but also has some balls like a P90. As far as the Superior getting Tele tones, you might want to email Saul about that. I'm sure he could build you one that got the sound you are looking for.
He will make the Superior with a bolt on neck if you want to go for the tradtional strat/tele sound.

My brother in law has an alder set neck and it sings ....Blunders description of the pickup is exactly as I hear it too . A great sonic crossroad ...twangs more than a p 90 but flows through a chunky mid in a more muscular way than a tele ...I suppose ash/maple and a full scale will take you closer yet .

This thread is coming perilously close to violating a major GP rule - no thread with the word "Koll" in the title shall go any more than six consecutive posts without a pic.
Sorry - not my rules...I'm just sayin'

Here you go: The pic doesn't really do the finish justice. The top actually has a better grain match than what is shown.

Gee, Blunder, and here I thought I knew what my second Koll was going to be. Maybe I was wrong...that's very cool.
I really dig the Electroflux, as well, and agree with the descriptions offered. I should have changed the neck pickup on that Glide Jr & kept it -- one of the very few, if not the only, guitars I've regretted selling. Electro + ash + wraptail + trans red nitro = thoroughly cool guitar.

Crazyquilt,
Thanks! It's a super fun guitar. Once again, Saul brought to life what was just a vision in my head.
I've actually switched out the TV Jones Magnatron that was in the neck for a Fralin P-92. It's a way better match with electroflux.

Hey - I think the guitar you are describing was once mine. Did it have a ding on the lower side of the fretboard and neck? If so, it was actually alder, not ash. I could see it being mistaken for ash, though.
And it was a cool guitar for sure.

That was it, Katuna. It was alder, huh? I was told it was ash when I bought it, and then I represented it that way when I sold it. Oops. It did seem to have a pretty strong grain for alder, and it was very, very light.
Blunder: I can see how the P-92 would be a better match. I have a Magnatron in the neck position of my Gretsch 6120, and it's such a big, clear, warm sounding pickup, I can see how it might not work as well with the growlier, more aggressive (and, I suspect, hotter) Electroflux. But it sounds killer paired in that guitar with a TV Classic.
Edward: I've owned 2 Kolls, now, and they were both astoundingly good sounding guitars, and I'm sure my Duo Glide (which Saul hopes to have done in February...oh joy!) will be just as great, and a better match for my needs.

Thanks Katuna. It's a korina body/neck with maple top. It's a really lively sounding guitar. It might be going on the block soon to fund another. I've been talking with Saul about a TRG . It's all your fault:D . You should have never posted pics of yours. That thing is sweet!
The Magnatron sounded pretty good with the volume control wide open, but got kind of dark when the volume was backed off. The P92 is a really sweet sounding p/u. I'm really curious how a pair of them would sound together.

Hey Blunder, would you care to elaborate on the P-92? I'm not terribly familiar with them, and am curious what they sound like, what they compare to? Similar to a P-90?

This is my dream guitar...
I want mine in 6120 Orange on a Swamp Ash body with a tortoise guard and Lollar P-90s (or Fred Stuart Blackguard Tele pups - haven't made up my mind yet). It literally keeps me up nights - I need to find some $$$ quick!

Might be for sale, huh? What is the scale on it? What is the neck profile like?
Thanks and I think you would dig a TRG for sure! Sorry for giving you gas, but you know, it makes me feel better about my issues when others have them as well!

Yeah, I hear ya; it definitely seems like it's ash. But, unless Saul and I miscommunicated, I'm pretty sure it was alder. I remember that he was reluctant to put a transluscent stain on it because of the wood grain having some "moles" as he put it.
Personally, I don't think there's a whole lot of sonic diff between ash and alder when they are of similar weight/density, so...

I have Superior with Electroflux and P92 on order. I thought that it might be a good match from what people are saying about them.

Katuna and Blunder what is a TRG?!
Great pics so far everyone... here is my baby, custom Tele made to Saul's specs which happened to be the EXACT same specs of my dream Tele guitar, sold an Echoczar w/Angel Baby and a Germino to get this baby, I'm playing through a SS Fender Princeton... and have never been happier!
6lbs 14oz of PURE tone.
Lollar Firebird Mini-hum w/magnetic poles in neck, "blackface" strat in the middle, staggered pole tele in the bridge.

Lately I can't get the idea of a Bridgetown 7 Archtop outta my head... Honey Amber Burst, Kent Armstrong floating pick-up, Cream/White/Cream binding, the straightest grain Flame Maple that Saul can find, reverse Cello Tailpiece and the Art Deco headstock/finger rest. I can always dream... put 13 flatwounds on'er, tune to Eb and bop all day.

Hey Kyle, are we talking about the infamous red stained Jr? That's guitars been around (I bought it from Kyle) and everyone's loved it! It was headed to Austin the last time I saw it :)

Wow... That green with the perloid is sweet!
What kind of woods?
If I could get 7 string versions of those pickups, I would be selling some gear.

I had that mint green one with pearloid for awhile. It is ash with a maple neck and ebony fretboard. it's really awesome; I just couldn't afford to keep it because I was moving and I needed to keep paying on the incoming TRG. That one I miss quite a bit.
Hey Kevin - yes, we are indeed talking about the Red Jr. Glide. Miss that one too, but I liked the green ash Superior more, I think; how is it treating you?
Cheers

I just think it would be hard to get a 7 string lipstick and Tv Jones pickup.

Yup ... I bought the Glide Jr from lcovemusic, and I can't remember the name of the guy who bought it from me, but he sent it to Saul to have the fretboard chip repaired. I don't know whether or not he kept it; I've thought about trying to hunt it down, and a couple of people have emailed or PM'd me asking for the name of the latest owner.
There's a very good reason I started calling it the Peripatetic Glide. Rolling Stone might not be a bad moniker either, although it's a bit done, now... ;)
