View Full Version : Instruction DVDs?

I've been playing for 14 years and have caught myself getting into ruts lately and developing some lazy habits. Basically I'm itching to start learning again and not just playing.
I was looking at the Hot Licks DVDs from Warren Haynes (slide) and the Danny Gatton rhythym one. I like the idea of slowed down parts and seeing the tab on the screen while I learn. I've got books that I always go back to, but I'd like something with sights and sounds, hence wanting a DVD.
Anyone know if these discs be too basic for an experienced player?
I've never worked from an instructional video - are they worthwhile or a waste of time?
Does anyone have any other instructional DVDs they recommend to shake me up a little and give some new challenges?
I've never been interested in shredding. I might be able to get into a jazz instruction DVD, especially if it focused on chord melody work. My interests are usually in southern rock and memphis soul. If I can find anything to help me improve in those areas, that'd be best.

Tomo's DVD is a great way to tone up your chops. I also have the Warren Haynes and Danny Gatton DVD's. Great insight into the playing of both artists. Great value, recommended.

Eric Johnson is very clear and covers lots of ground
Same with Robben Fords stuff.
But really, there's so much out there
Go with your favorite artists.

I have the Danny Gatton dvd you mentioned and I think that an experienced player need not worry about the material being "too basic".....and that goes for pretty much anything by Gatton. I happen to really enjoy his instructional stuff....however, I don't necessarily find him to be the best teacher in the world.
+1 for Robben Ford- I have two of his dvd’s….I find myself going back to them…. time and time again.
I really like anything (instructional material) by Greg Koch. He doesn’t have a lot of stuff out there yet…but I’m sure there will be more coming. I wanted to re-learn some of the SRV stuff I forgot over the years….the two Greg Koch discs that go over SRV’s style are by far the best I’ve seen…..he presents the material in an easy to digest manner (at least for me) and he also happens to have a great sense of humor…which makes things more entertaining. Both of the SRV discs contain material that a player of any skill level should be able to get something of value out of…………..and they are really inexpensive @ around $18-$25
Have you ever seen any of Scott Henderson’s dvd’s?.....he’s also a great teacher and the stuff is certainly not going to be too elementary or basic..…at least for the majority of players that I encounter.
I have a ton of this stuff…….so let me know if I can help…..I know the feeling of what you’re going through….as I, myself, have gotten stuck on what seems to be the Never Ending Plateau
Hope this helps……..let us know what you end up delving in to and how it helped you

I like the first Larry Carlton one. It's only available in something called VHS though?:)

Thanks everyone. I figure I'll order the Gatton one first and if I find myself enjoying learning from my TV, then I'll get a Robben Ford one next.
