View Full Version : Clear component with silver foil underneath; cap or resistor?

In my amp there's a component feeding the treble pot that looks like a resistor, I think.

A small cylinder, made of clear plastic(or something), with what looks to be foil underneath.

The code on it reads:

470
11 or II

On the pot side there is a black stripe around the foil. negative end of cap? With a Fluke it reads no resistance at all.

Sounds like a polystyrene capacitor. 470 pf is a pretty common value.

It reads no resistance or no continuity? A cap should read some resistance and continuity at 1st, then move towards no continuity as it charges and end up at infinity ohms. This is because the meter uses DC to check resistance.

Your thinking of an electrolytic, Those tiny clear caps are Film Caps, They generally show very little or no reading, Unless they are leaky.

Why?

Ruggedness? That's the only thing the other's have got over them.

Why? if he is unable to locate them easy, Gives him other options.

I personally like them, And I think in many amps they sound better than ceramic, or even silver mica caps.

Ruggedness? Yep, the leads are very delicate, And they are also venerable to heat both while soldering, and even in circuit in some cases.
I use a very fine spaghetti tubing over the leads to help absorb vibration because I have seen occasional lead breakage due to vibration.

The leads did appear a little more flimsy. I thought maybe they were cheap/low quality.
