No Jon
This is more like mass hypnosis.

Yes, perhaps. But the tones I heard were compelling enough for me :D I now have my dream amp (from Ben), very much in the marshall vein, but to be able get dumble type tones with a pedal............ what's the big deal about getting on the list? The 'phenomenon' here seems to be Robbie's ability to pull this off, uniquely, and our belief that what we heard here will give us the ability to own those tones. But I also know that reality can be elusive....... Time will tell. It's a pretty fun ride though..... ;)

is there something going on here that doesn't fit somebody's idea of a hobby? love of great guitar tones? that's it folks, save that money and go shoot your wad on drugs...that will get us all closer to rock n roll stardom than any d**ble amp dreams...cause you are all pissing it away. that said, i still want to be on the list and it doesn't keep me up at nights waiting...

Hello, all-

I'm sorry if the following might appear to some suspicious-minded folks as adding to the "voodoo aura" surrounding Rob Hall's new Dumble-inspired pedal. It isn't meant to... and hopefully won't be.

I'm a 40+ years pro player, and have known Robbie for over 20 of them. In all that time, he has been 'refining his diamond" of developing tube-distortion emulation circuit designs, and building various prototypes that he has distributed to a small circle of pro player friends. I've been fortunate enough to have played (and purchased) several of them. In many ways, this new one is the most highly evolved of 'em all... and it's CERTAINLY the one that most mimics Dumble-style tone.

Earlier this afternoon, I spent an hour and a half playing and listening to Rob's new pedal, using various non-boutique, run-o-the-mill Teles, Strats, and Rob's PRS Santana. The pedal was plugged into a standard, non-modded Deluxe Reverb. Real simple, straightforward stuff.... not even reverb!

Simply stated, the pedal is fantastic, and definitely exceeds by a longshot any pedal I've personally tried (please note- I've NOT tried the ZenDrive). For reference purposes, i own a Fuchs mod head, a Two Rock, and several other amps that make Dumble-style noises. I'm reasonably familiar with the amp options out there, and the pedals that theoretically mimic those amps. This pedal does what these amps do... at a level that you can have a comfortable conversation over. In particular, the touch sensitivity and dynamics are amazing. Dial up a gainy lead sound, dig into a single-note, and it screams. Hit a double-stop, and it gets enormously huge and fat, without any icepick highs. But then... brush the strings lightly, and a beautiful, chimey, clear bell-like tone with beautiful high harmonics breathes out of the thing... still on the same gainy lead setting!

I've never experienced a pedal do THAT before. I'm sure there are many folks who'd love the tone of this thing, but couldn't care less about this touch-sensitivity aspect.... but to me, it's REALLY inspiring, and impossible to find outside of the loud, power-amp distortion realm. If you're like me in this respect, then you've really got to hear this pedal.

Just wanted to pipe in... hopefully to add another data point to the discussion.

Hi Everybody,

Here's a quick update:

Sound Clips:
They are still on track to be out by the end of the month.

Modes of Operation:
I have had a couple of questions on the modes of operation of the unit. The unit provides 4 modes as follows:

1.) Inactive: Both channels are bypassed via a unity gain buffer having an input impedance of 1Mohm and output impedance of 1kohm
2.) Active Clean Channel: This channel provides the full suite of tone-stack and equalization. This channel is clean, no OD.
3.) Active Overdrive Channel: This channel provides full suite of tone-stack, equalization and overdrive capabilities
4.) Active Overdrive Channel Boost: This mode provides preamp boost mode when Overdrive Channel is activated.

The above modes are available via:
a.) Normal out
b.) Speak Sim out
Note: The guitar amp compensation can be switched in or out for all active modes.

Price:
This week I had planned on posting a price for the unit, but unfortunately I did not receive firm quotes from all of my suppliers. What I did receive though were ROM (rough order of magnitude) estimates so I can provide a price range. The price range for the dual channel unit will be between $375.00 and $475.00, shipping and tax not included. Next week I should be able to firm things up.

Thanks,

Robbie

Wow, I'm SHOCKED.. I thought for sure, that it'd cost TWICE THAT FIGURE.. .I can't imagine 1% of the guys on this forum thought it'd be that decent of a price .

Eric

p.s. AND with Paul Asbell's endorsement above, that makes this an ABSOLUTE NO-Brainer for guys who want something like this.. . Dumbles don't really jive with my playing style from what I can tell (and feel!) but for many guys who have light touches , this sounds like a great deal .

Is there any chance that the Boost could also be applied to the Clean channel? Doesn't the Dumble amp have that option?

Robbie
04-08-2007, 04:36 PM
Hi Ron,

I actually looked into this, but in the end decided to dedicate one footswitch towards the PAB on the OD channel only. The PAB works by isolating a portion of the tone stack via a switch. With a dumble the tone stack is shared between the clean and overdrive channel, therefore one switch (relay) is suitable. The pedal on the other hand offers two independant tone stacks. To provide a PAB on the clean channel would require either another footswitch if independent control was required, or an electronically controlled switch (FET or relay) that would be required to switch out both tone stacks simultaneously. The FET switching is not ideal for two reasons, resistive losses that impact the tone stack performance and/or non-linearities, which imposes distortion. Relays would solve this problem, but would put a massive drain on the +9volt battery. An additional F.S. was not pursued because it would cause cramping and result in mis-hitting of the other footswitches or drive the box to be larger which I was trying not to do to save pedal board real-estate and keep the cost down.

Thanks,

Robbie

Hi Everybody,

The Price:
Well the quotes are all in. The two channel unit sell price is $395.00, shipping/handling, tax, and PayPal fee not included. PayPal wants 3.5% and I don't want to stick this charge to anybody who wants to pay with a money order.

Pre-Payment:
I do not believe in pre-payment and therefore am not asking for it. I don't think its fair tying people's money up.

Order Confirmation:
Here's my plan regarding orders. I have been maintaining "the list" since the beginning of this thread and plan on honoring it if I receive a confirmation message from you that says: "Please confirm my $395.00 order". When I receive this from you I'll check your name as confirmed. I know on 4/8/07 I posted a price range and have received some responses to be on the list since then. Please resubmit your request with "Please confirm my $395.00 order". This will make sure I absolutely understand your interest.

Next Phase:
When I receive confirmation on 25% of "the list", I will be kicking off the mfg phase. There will be a time lag for set-up, tooling, ordering parts, building and testing the units. When a unit is ready, I will take the next confirmed name on the list and will PM or email the person confirming your unit is ready. At this time I expect payment via paypal or money order. Once received I'll ship the unit to you.

Website:
I am now working on a website that will include e-mail and will be where the Paypal will be located. Unfortunately getting the unit ready for productionization has taken priority. I'll post the location as soon as its ready.

I thank everybody for their patience and support.

Robbie

Am I the only one wondering why TGP is allowing this? Why don't you guys email Robbie directly with buy/sell info ? This should be in an Emporium , and then it only allows 1 bump a day? ? ?? Once Paul A posted here about this pedal I know it's going to be killer, but this seems way against this forum's rules to me.

Eric

yea me being a Tgp police is a funny one , I realize, but this is an Emporium ad at this point , and the replies should go to the builder himself. Congratulations on the pedal and lots of you I bet will be happy

FWIW and just FYI rules differ slightly in the Manufacturers / Dealers section.

It looks and sounds great, but I think you should change it's name. You should call it the Boutique Overdrive Pedal. Gear gets acronymed all the time here on The Gear Page (KOT, KOTB, etc) and, as an acronym, BOP is pretty good. Whereas, BO stinks.

STINKS! :roll See what I did there?! "BO stinks!" :rotflmao

Hi Everybody,

I had a couple minutes to pull together some clips yesterday using a little Marshall Valve State Combo and Various guitars. The backing track was done using an old Takamine Classical guitar I've had for years. The pedal settings were the same for all guitars and tracks.

Here are the details:

Amp:

Marshall Valvestate AVT2000, 20Watts
Settings: Clean Channel,
Treble: 12:00
Middle: 12:00
Bass: 12:00
Volume: 9:00 (85db)

Speaker:

10 inch Celestion, came with amp

Mic Set-up

(see pic below)

Recording Set-up

SM57 into M-Box
No Eq, or Compression, just a bit of reverb

PS: Robbie, I definately want a two channel one. Thanks!

I did not see that original post by Paul but listening to the clips it was really the one thing that really stood out to me, the pedal can do those raelly nice high gain tones at any volume level. Pretty superb!

Hi Everybody,

I have received several requests regarding price on a single channel unit. Based on all the responses I received, the interest in the dual channel unit (described below) outweighed the single channel unit. Therefore, I am focusing my efforts on the dual channel unit first. Once I get the dual unit well into production, I will re-visit the single channel version.

Thanks,

Robbie

HarryJ
04-18-2007, 09:11 PM
Curious,
Will normal out and speaker sim work simultaneously so 1 side goes to the amp, and other to the PA?

edit: oops is that what you mean by" Note: The guitar amp compensation can be switched in or out for all active modes"

Thx

HJ

Hi Everybody,

Here's a draft page out of the manual I'm presently putting together for the unit. This should provide some clarification on how the unit can be applied to different working situations. The speaker simulator section (modeled after a RWB) is connected to the post end of the processing so that broadband applications (board, PA, etc) can utilize all aspects of the unit.

Thanks,

Looks and sounds great, Robbie. I have two questions.

Active Clean Channel: This channel provides the full suite of tone-stack and equalization. This channel is clean, no OD.

Does the clean channel still give the effect of playing through tubes?

Did you ever address the earlier concern about the knobs being too close to the footswitches?

Hi Everbody,

Here's some quick answers to questions that have popped up recently.

Delivery Time:

The first batch of units is estimated to take between 7 to 10 weeks to complete, assuming no part delivery problems pop-up. This time is required for finalizing the PCB design, ordering and receiving parts, populating the pCBs, and then performing final assembly and test. The first lot size will be somewhat small as to work out the build process before starting larger production runs.

Clean Channel:

The clean channel was designed to capture the frequency response of the Dxmble clean channel and operate in the linear mode of operation where no distortion is present when activated. This approach allows for better signal to noise ratio performance for clean settings by setting the gain high in the pre-stages and using the full extent of the amplifier's voltage rail. Additionally, non-linear tube modeling is available on the OD channel, offered in two modes, normal and preamp boost.

Footswitch / Knob Positions:

I spent quite a bit of time evaluating different aspects of the box layout in this area. Considerations included: box cost, pedal board real-estate consumption, and user feedback. I looked at larger surface area boxes and different box geometries. Both approaches required a custom box which excessively drove cost and real-estate in the case of the larger surface area box. The best solution I found in the end was to stay with the prototype cast aluminum box, and adjust the footswitch heights to their maximum and the knob heights to their minimum. To date, knob interference has not been raised as an issue by any of the users who have tried the unit.

Sound Clips:

The next set of sound clips will include different playing styles and higher gain settings.

Order Confirmations:

I have received numerous comments on the name of the box "Boutique Overdrive" as is this real? I originally selected it for its generic but true meaning. I am now reconsidering renaming it before the first production release. I can't believe how hard this is. :jo We'll see how it turns out.

Thanks Again,

Robbie

Robbie you should really consider sending acknowledgements to everyone who has asked to be on the list. Otherwise we have no way of knowing you received it.
Please consider this!

I think a good name is "Dxmble Box"

I would not be offended if it were called the Robbie Overdrive
The Tim and Timmy seem to be well accepted as pedal names
so why not a Robbie? Or something simple like the "ODS" pedal

Thanks for the updates Robbie !

Hi Everybody,

Here's a quick update:

Order confirmations:

I have been a bit swamped and now have a new person available to send out confirmations to your emails. You should be getting an email confirmation within the next week or two.

Production Status:

The PCB layout is done and right now I am going through a checking process. This is a big milestone since the PCB design needed to accommodate several different types of mechanical interfaces and fit in the enclosure. The first batch delivery time is estimated to be in 6 to 8 weeks assuming no part issues pop up.

Names:

I thank everybody for their inputs. The name list has boiled down to: DTone Overdrive, Ethos Overdrive, VDOS Preamp and DOS Tone Preamp. I will down select soon.

Thanks,

Robbie

Any idea how many units the first batch will include for those signed up and are confirmed?

I know this will difficult to answer with the busy schedule, I'm just trying to adjust time with a budget (much like you are!), thanks!

That's a shame, because the 'Humble Overdrive' is a cracking name!

I'd have gone with 'Stoopid Dumbbell', but that's just me...

Out of your list, 'Ethos' is the one that stands out. IMHO, of course.

Robbie, please just don't pic DTone, that is the weakest of the 4 names.

Yea I thought Humble Overdrive was perfect, since humble according to dictionary.com means, and I think it's perfectly fit (compared to the real Dxmble): not proud or arrogant; modest: to be humble although successful.
