I hate to say it, but I don't like any of those. I might have to cover it with tape if it goes that way.

You're joking right? You cover up names on your pedals that you don't like? :p Oh well , we're all pretty different!!!! A pedal produces music sounds and alters sounds or enhances sounds, and that's all I care about in a pedal . . Could are less if it's the Super Hardon or the Bad Monkey or the dtone. Hopefully some of you guys don't worry about the name of your pedal too much! Enjoy this one regardless of what it's called

Eric

That's a shame, because the 'Humble Overdrive' is a cracking name!

Robbie, please just don't pic DTone, that is the weakest of the 4 names.

Yeah, since we're all "helping" Robbie name the pedal :D I'll have to agree that's my least favorite, as well.
DTone, DTone... kind of reminds me of ZPlane, ZPlane...

Humble Pie Overdrive is by far the best name... But i agree with everyone in that it doesn't really matter what the name is just the sweetness that comes out!

I'm not on the list but have been following this thread - pedal looks ace Robbie.

No offence but please don't ruin the product with those names you shortlisted!! Not keen on any...

I think the best mentioned in this thread is:

Humble Pie Overdrive.

For many reasons:

It rolls of the tongue nicely
It rhymes
It hints at the origin of inspiration with enough 'tongue in cheek-ness'
And providing the pedal performs as indicated - its time for all the Naysayers who said a Dumble couldn't be put in a pedal to eat...."humble pie"!!!!

I like that....HOB shortens nicely for all the BBforums...

My 2 pence

Humble Pie to us guys who are 47, just reminds us of the band Humble Pie. Humble Pie has implications of CRANKED MARSHALLS and some of the best raw guitar tone ever.. BUT NOTHING in common with a Dumble. Anything that rhymes with Dumble is CHEEZE PLUS . . SO ...................there 's another guy's view. I think the "boutique overdrive' tag he had in the 1st place was by far the best so far. Noone complained, all you guys got on the 'list' even before there was a list , and it described EXACTLY what this pedal is.

Production Status:

I have completed checking the layout and the PCB designer is incorporating changes. The first batch delivery time is estimated to be in 5 to 7 weeks assuming no part issues pop up.

Names:

WOW, the name suggestions are great! I've got some things to think about. ;)

Here's a new pedal that is Dumble inspired. The top channel provides overdrive and the bottom is clean. The front panel toggles are typical of the dumble with exception of the Classic / Modern. The Classic is based on the 60-70's tone stack and the Modern is the Sky. The toggles on the right side of the box (barely viewable) provide compensation going into a classic Fender amp or straight (going into a power amp), and the lower toggle provides two options for speaker simulator miking (Eminence RWB versus a Celestion G12M-70).

Please help me, I need to buy tone. Please sign me up for a Robbie BOD pedal. Until then, I will have to get by with the KOT, BJF, Landgraff MOD, SRB808, MI Audio, Blackstone, Menatone, Xotic BB and AC, Fulltone, Keeley, Barber, Eternity, Diamond, Hermida, Hao, Homebrew, etc. ad nauseum, blah, blah, blah! The ABC's of OD can become an OCD PDQ for those with GAS! ROTFLMFAO! IMHO, of course! YMMV. Oh wait, I forgot! Hi Everybody,

Here's a quick update:

Confirmations:

I believe I have provided email confirmations to those folks who have placed their orders via email.

There are 3 categories for those folks that I have not yet confirmed, they are:

1. Folks who provided their order on TGP forum page, but did not leave an email address

2. Folks who provided their order via private messages, but did not leave an email address

3. Folks who provided their order via private messages, and did leave an e-mail.

Without your email, it is difficult for me to provide you a confirmation that you are on the list. I intend to get back to everybody and the quickest way for you to get a confirmation is to email me directly at rob@customtonesinc.com. I am focusing on category 3 above first, then will work on 1 and 2 by PM'ing you to get your email. Again, this will take longer than if you email me directly.

Production Status:

The board build process should be starting this week. I estimate 4 to 6 weeks for the first batch to be completed assuming no part problems pop up.

First Batch Size:

The first batch size is going to be very small to work out the mfg build process. Follow on batches will ramp up quickly.

Sound Clips:

I have had numerous requests for more diverse sound clips. I'm really sorry I have not been able to get those out so far. I have been consumed pulling together the PCB design and have made this my number 1 priority. Hopefully things will calm down a bit and I can get some time to work on them.

I really appreciate everybody's patience and support.

Thanks,

Robbie

Hi Everybody,

Here's a quick update:

I had a little set back last week. The e-file that had the PCB design got corrupted just before it was going out to the board house and half the board information got lost. My PCB designer has been working around the clock since then to rebuild the design and he is just about done. I'm going to see if I can expedite the board house to turn the boards quicker than planned to make up some time. I'm not sure if this is feasible, but we'll see.

Just a reminder:

If you would like to get on the list please send an email to rob@customtonesinc.com saying please confirm my $395 order.

Or along the same lines...paint it with that "Chalkboard Paint" (available at any big hardware store) and include some mulitcolored chalk so buyers can decorate their own.

Hi Everybody,

When I do an update to the website, I plan to post a notification here, that way you will know there is new info. The website should help in consolidating the data so folks won't have to search through many pages to get to it.

Thanks,

Robbie -

One suggestion on your website.... please get rid of the scrolling, both vertical and horizontal... it's a royal pain. The only way to read the opening page is to keep scrolling back and forth, left and right, all the way down the page! Yikes!

And more pics would be good....

Other than that, the website AND the pedal look great!!

Oh 2 more things... for the soundclips, that kind of link to Soundclick clips NEVER works for me! A better method is just put the .mp3 on your website... or alternatively a link to the Soundclick page then just let the user pick the clip... but why get Soundclick involved anyway?

Also, you should put better titles on the pages... For instance, if you go to this page: http://www.customtonesinc.com/page_3.html and then "Add to Favorites", the Title of your website will be "page 3". ?????

And when you get to it, you'll want a "website icon" like everybody is doing these days (See the little red "sun" in the URL for TGP?). It's an easy add...

Just sent an email to be added. Ever since I first heard someone playing through a D*umble (Kimock to be exact) I fell in love with that sound. If this pedal sounds anything in my rig like it does in those clips I will be one very happy camper.

I'm with you. I have had some of these pedals that claim to have "that tone" only to play through it and not even be close. I am waiting on this one to see if it is "it". I hope so, because I'm sick of buying pedals and selling them a week after because they are not what they are advertised to be at all. I won't mentioned any names but the last two were shit!! Not only were they not what they claimed to be, but they sounded like garbage - period.

Played mine for about 20 minutes last night. I like the green channel, the red channel is going to have learning curve for me. The Modern switch seems to have more mids than the vintage, and the Rock/Jazz switch sounded best in the Rock position, at least with the Strat. I was using it with a Maz 18 JR. It surely does sing!

I find that I really can't tell much about any piece of gear till I gig with it. And, FWIW, there are plenty of folks here who can render a much more detailed review than me.

All I can tell you so far is that I have spent more and gotten a lot less. I believe it to be a keeper. It is also well made and has very nice low profile feet on the bottom, so using is with velcro is easy to do, and you can still keep the feet on the pedal.

I didn't have time to do any clips last night, maybe tonight.

r9player

I think he means to say he's spent more on other gear/pedals and gotten less out of those compared to the ethos .. I might be wrong but that is how I read it.

bigroy
08-14-2007, 09:06 AM
Let me rephrase that...

I have spent a hell of a lot more on amps, guitars, pedals and women, and have gotten a lot less than what the Ethos delivers. It's a great pedal, I just didn't have time to give it a good workout. I spent more for a Shiva, didn't like it at all. Zendrive didn't do it for me either.

As for the Ethos, I am delighted with it. I think it's a lot of bang for the buck.:AOK

I just don't have the time or the inclination to write a long narrative on the nuances of the Ethos. It's just another pedal, but one that I will probably hang on to for a long time. One thing I might add is that Robbie followed up my delivery with an email, which I thought was a nice personal touch. This product launch was done correctly, IMO.

blue_lu

I guess I'll hold off until I see some more reviews. But I must admit, I am VERY interested in one of these. It sure does look swanky, and contains the functionality I have been looking for. No, I definitely am not expecting $10,000.00 tone in a $280.00 box. But I'm sure it sounds good.

HarryJ

Pedals sound drastically different with different gear anyway

HJ

bigroy

Having never played a Dumble, I have no way of comparing..Did it make me sound like Robben or Larry? Not at all, but I like the way it sounds. I tried a Howie a few years ago, and this is light years beyond that. And it will replace my RC Booster, as I already prefer the sound of the green channel over the RC.

I might add that I've had 3 emails from Robbie today offering some initial settings that I might find useful. And he's on vacation.

I will try to get some clips up tonight.

Thanks for the clips, bigroy - Can't wait for my number to come up! I'm looking forward to using it as a preamp in my recordings, been working on a lot of low(er) volume stuff of late, and this pedal should work out beautifully - the only problem I have with my Berhinger V-Amp (feeding into power section of Crate vc508, out to vintage Fender 4x10) is despite the great modeling and amp-like feel and control, I can't coax believable or reliable controlled feedback. The Ethos sounds like it has that all covered . . .

Nice playing, too, man, enjoyed listening for what you'd do next.

Peace - PD

P.S. The Maz sounds nice, friend . . .

Got my box. It sounds great. Why? Great eq that works well with single coils (fender telecaster), mini humbuckers(les paul deluxe), humbuckers(trini lopez), touch and volume sensitive distortion that cleans up when you back off,the ablility to get nice tone at a reasonable volume level, and not much junk on your notes when doing double stops or chording with distortion. I haven't had a chance to record direct with it yet but I will soon. All in all a nice package(I think the boost channel lifts the tone stack and gives a more midrange sound, its not a huge volume jump, but that changes slightly with your distortion settings). One last thing, I like what you can do to the treble on this box, there are many options with the treble, pres, brite, and hi-cut knobs and switches.

very few have had the chance in life to play one, so the responses will reflect what people've come to expect from recordings i.e robben etc....feel would be a more appropriate approach for such an amp, the sound signature reflects what is in the player's hands, feel and ultimately your musicality, even dumble himself knew that....

For some perspective, I was page 10, post #148, and received my confirmation from Robbie on 5/23/07, but I'm not certain which pedal # I am - I have not yet been given the high sign that my pedal will be ready soon. Hopefully, and without bugging Robbie anymore about it, we can put our collective heads together and figure out an approximation of where the pedal run stands. Sounds like 8 so far?

MoRawk
08-16-2007, 12:47 PM
We can probably sort it out if people earlier in the list can update whether they received a green light from Robbie yet. I'm page 5, post #73 and confirmed to the list by Robbie on 05/24/2007 and haven't gotten the green light from Robbie yet.

Let's try not to "Alf" Robbie and bombard him with emails hehe.

DAB
08-16-2007, 01:15 PM
I too would like to know where I stand on the list. I got my confirmation from Robbie on 5/20/07.

One catch in the plan may be the post where Robbie correctly notified folks that if they had not sent him an email address he could not confirm. In the mean time folks (like me) were sending him emails to his email address and receiving confirmation back from him.

I don't know if that realigned the list from the order in this thread or not.

I was on Page 3, post #43. My unit is #009. I do know Robbie is on vacation this week, although he took the time to follow up with me after I asked a question.

280.00 US was for the single channel version, try a search for that....or look u p posts by robbie, they are limited to this thread as you'll see....

Oops, my bad. It's actually $395.00, which is definitely much cheaper than a Dumble. I think i'll wait until the hype has died down a bit. But I am betting one of these will sounds fantastic through my SF Twin.

Do any of the fortunate few who have recieved their Ethos pedals
also have a Jetter gain stage red to do a comparison?

I would love to hear about a shoot-out of the top dxmble influenced
pedals (Ethos, Jetter,Howie, Zendrive ,HOA mod,Small Fry. Exotic BB etc.)

Sorry man, all I have are a Mo'd and a homemade tubescreamer with some mods. I am interested to see some comparisons also with other dumble style pedals. That being said I added another ethos soundclip. This one is more bluesy. http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=280040&page=3

Hey Guys .... I was on pg2 #28 and my Ethos (serial# 006) arrived today. Funny cause at the same time the postman also delivered the ZEN that I ordered last year.

Of course as Murphy's law would have it, I am leaving on a business trip and will not get to play with the new toys till the weekend.

Anyway, you guys on the list probably need to be a little patient but should not worry about Robbie. He has been 100% on the money which is amazing considering he's been swamped with these pedal questions & orders not to mention he works a full time day gig.

Hi Everybody,

Today I received a review from John Moore. He is a great player and a really nice guy. He tried to post his review on the gear page but had some difficulty due to the type of email he was using. His review had some cool insight on how he sets up his Ethos that might be useful to others.

Thanks,

Robbie

Hi fellow tone junkies,

I just got my Ethos. Wow!

Before I start raving, let me tell you how it came about.
I met Rob when he came to my studio and asked me to test drive a couple of his overdrives. He showed me one of his earlier dual channel overdrives and the Ethos. Rob started with the earlier unit, showing me how versatile it was. I have to say, it was amazing. I had never heard an overdrive with its capabilities. I knew at that point, Rob “is the real deal”. He fired up his Ethos through my Fender Vibrolux (with no reverb). I was more than impressed. Now over the years I’ve acquired many amp emulator / overdrive units, including the Zen drive. I will say, up to that day, my favorite was the Zen. It’s very simple and has a tone I like.

Now I’m not a Dumble expert, but I’ve always been impressed with Robben Ford’s tone. Lets not take anything away from his touch, but when I played the ETHOS I think I learned some of Robben’s “magic”.

First off, when using the clean channel there is a very natural presence, which makes the guitar sound as if it’s jumping out of the amp. This is great for getting those rhythm guitar parts to move forward in a mix. Note: The gain on this channel is volume only with no overdrive.

The overdrive is not like anything I’ve ever played through. It is extremely touch sensitive, meaning you can crank the gain (drive) and dig in for great sustain, yet back off with your pick and get a clear bell like sound. This is so foreign to me that it’s taking me a little time to dial in.

The boost has a preset amount of gain over the drive channel. This is just right for those times you need over the top sustain. Note: There are only two adjustments for the boost. One is the tone knob on the side of the Ethos and the other is the presence on the drive channel. I set the boost tone first, using those two adjustments, then dial in the drive channel tone and finally adjust the clean channel to my liking.

This is not your “run of the mill” overdrive. It has lots of tone adjustments, which translates to incredible flexibility. Be prepared to spend a little time playing with it and you will be “blown away”.

I hope this gives folks an idea of what Rob and his Ethos are about.

John Moore

I got confirmed on the list on 5/20. Then I got an email this week from Susan saying that I am in the 3rd Batch. Second batch is being built now and will deliver in the Sept/Oct timeframe. I am guessing that puts me in the Nov./Dec. timeframe.

If you just now got on the list you are probably looking at sometime next year.

Robbie, I was reading the FAQ section on using 12v adaptors and wondered about using an external 9v battery. I often power my pedals with an 8 battery cluster of NiMH AAs, which allows rechargeability and no wall connection. Would this be a problem because it's plugged in to the ext jack and therefore would have the voltage dropped by the filtering, which I wouldn't need in this config??

Sure. The power in jack needs to see 12-15v as the filtering circuit in the pedal steps that level down to ~9V. So, putting in 9V won't cut it.
The internal 9V has no filtering so that's fine. I'll probably just use Lithium 9V cells internally and get pretty good mileage.

Just a quick update:

The second batch of Ethos are coming right along. Units are on track and should start shipping at the end of this month.

I will be posting more comprehensive guidelines on power adapter usage for the Ethos at www.customtonesinc.com (http://www.customtonesinc.com) in about a week or so. It will address several of the questions that have come up regarding various adapter types and voltage ranges.

Thanks for all the great emails on the sound clips. I really appreciate it.

Robbie I know you are super busy with batch two of the Ethos...

BUT are you still considering doing a single channel version?

I'd love to try an Ethos that was single channel OD with boost, two footswitches, on/off+boost and your compensation circuit etc.

That would fit my rig perfectly...

Sorry to ask!

I've never decided to pay $400.00 for anything faster than this Ethos pedal just after reading this thread. Emailed Robbie and it looks like I may get one from batch 3 or 4. (Maybe a Christmas present?)

The sound clips are incredible. Although we always hear that tone for one is not the same tone for another, we all want the same thing. Flexibility to shape our tone, jaw dropping tone depth and colorations and gear that does not break. We all know that one chord or note through a great amp, guitar and/or pedal basically tells you whether you want to keep playing with that gear or not. I think Robbie's found it and has worked to share the discovery. Cool. Thanks Rob!

I recently discovered the boutique market of amps and pedals and could not be happier. Buying and supporting American stuff such as Goodsell and Carr amps and homemade pedals has been a lot of fun.

No more Fender Mexican amps for me!

Received my Ethos today. Spent twenty minutes with it before I had to leave. Incredibly versatile. Cleans up very well just by lightening your pick attack. Growls and sustains by digging in. The most touch sensitive pedal I've played so far. I'm looking forward to spending some serious time learning what it can do.
