I was wondering if anyone has advice or knows of resources on how to get better at picking out melodies of eixsting songs/creating new melodies? Thanks!

Practice playing any melody you hear. You can try now: play twinkle twinkle, play jingle bells, play the national anthem (of whatever country you choose). That's ow you get better at being able to do it.
To be able to make up melodies, I'd suggest just singing some made-up melody and then learning to play it on guitar.
listen to the music which emphasized melodic motives
The Classical Era
Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, etc . . .
You need to feed your melody hungry ears with this stuff

This helped recently for studio work where I wasn't particularly inspired with the tune and I just put it on a cd and started mouthing out melody in the car during my day. Kept repeating a couple parts that hooked me - got home and tried to recreate it.
