Anyone played both? I know the physical differnces. (i.e 12" radius on EJ vs 7.5 on TSN). How do the pickups compare? Build quality? weight? etc.

I like the fact you can get a Rosewood on the thin skin model. I didnt like the neck on my EJ.

between the two for me having played both but not owning either is the neck radius. For blues noodlin', and head bangin' I like the 12 inch. For rythm work, Keef'in and bein' a cool cat pullin' off full barre and partial bar chords and double stops all over the neck I like the 7.5...

Basically nothing plays easier than a 7.5 with somewhat high action for me. I know that about me. High-ish action lets ya bend pretty good on smaller radius.

But honestly you can probably pick by finish color. You'd adjust to either one, and if you wouldn't be proud owning a nice one of either model, get ready to spend ALOT to do better!:dude

I have an EJ and had a Thin Skin. The Thin Skin wasn't nearly as resonant, it sure was beautiful though. I sent it back, on the other hand, I hand picked the EJ, it's a keeper. I did have them at the same time, so it was a direct comparison.

Was it just the resonance or were there other features that didn't float your bateau?

I've had both, both great guitars. In the end, I sold both and got another Nash. I personally did not care for the EJ pickups. The '56, I actually had no complaints, why the heck did I sell it? I am considering a 60's think skin sometime though.

Interesting to hear the direct comparison. I've sold my EJ and hope to be playing a few Thin Skins on Monday. I thought my EJ was very resinant also. I think its "probably" the best Fender production guitar made. I'm a bit worried that I wont find something I'll like as well without going custom shop.

I have a thin skin and am really pleased with it.
I played a EJ and could not get past the terrible finnish on the neck of the one I played. Feels like it was finnished with honey. Super sticky and tacky feeling. The rest of the guitar was nice.

I bought a '62 thin skin from a forum member - vintage white. I love it. The neck, radius etc feel great. Really resonant - I'm just thrilled with it. I played a few different EJ's and they felt like great guitars but I've never had the two side-by-side so I can't say for sure. If I was interested in a maple neck strat I'd probably go for the '57 thin skin.

Use some 0000 steelw ool and that takes the gumminess away from the back of the neck, I do it to most of the guitars I know I'm keeping.
I would say, simply go for feel and resonant tone, sound can obviously be shaped by swapping pickups of your choice. For players not into the the vintage radius, it can be solved right there, but as you see many people like both for various reasons. FWIW, some don't think they can have a vintage radius with lower action, It comes down to continous tweaking over sometime for me at least. $ for $, the EJ is tought to beat. A used time machine can be had for a few hundred more. One of the big Fedner dealers often mentioned on here custom orders their thin skins with 9.5 radius I believe, that might be the route to go!

I've never played a thin skin or an EJ model. But a few months back I got a Strat Pro closet classic. It has a 12" radius on the neck and a nitro finish. I'm lovin' this guitar ~ Maybe it's worth a look for you.

I have an EJ and *thinnest* of thin skins... the Rory Gallagher. If you made me choose today, I would keep the RG. :)

Does the RG even qualify as having a skin? Its more like a patch!

Anyone tried the "new" thin skins?

Maybe FatSound, or Wild West, not sure, try a time machine or custom shop search, might take awhile though. Anyone know off hand?
